‘Address local issues before initiating new developments at Colva beach'

Colva:
The Small and Medium Hotels Association has urged govt to address the long-standing issues faced by local businesses and the fishing community before initiating any new development projects at Colva beach.
'Colva beach, once known for its pristine charm that attracted people from all corners of Salcete, now lies in a state of neglect. This has led to a sharp decline in foreign tourist arrivals, particularly among the hippie crowd that once put Goa on the global tourism map,' Small and Medium Hotels Association vice president Dixon Vaz.
Vaz, who is also Cavelossim sarpanch, said govt's recent announcement to develop Colva beach under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme must be preceded by consultations with local stakeholders.
He said the local fishing community's concerns — especially regarding spaces for unloading and drying their daily catch — must be resolved first, with permanent solutions.
He said govt should discuss the proposed developmental plans with key stakeholders, including restaurant and shack owners, taxi drivers, water sports operators, the public and the local panchayat.
Vaz said he will also request the chief minister and the tourism minister to look into their grievances before proceeding with development initiatives.

Affordable housing e-draw portal to be linked with Aadhaar to tackle irregularities

Gurgaon: Govt's online portal for drawing of lots in affordable housing schemes will directly cross-check and verify applicant details with information in the Aadhaar card to make the process more transparent and eliminate chances of duplication or manipulation. Officials of the department of town and country planning (DTCP) said on Friday that the updated portal – called TCP Haryana – will fetch applicant details such as name, address and mobile number from the Aadhaar card. This will prevent manual data entry errors and manipulation while ensuring that only eligible candidates are considered for allotments. The move comes in response to irregularities uncovered in the 2023 housing draw of Aster Avenue 36 in Sector 36, Sohna. During the draw of lots for 702 flats at the society, those with addresses given as 'Sohna City' were considered eligible for the scheme, limiting the pool to 2,200 entries out of 51,000 applicants. This was blamed on a technical error. Cross-checking with Aadhaar would do away with chances of such errors, officials said. The Aster Avenue draw was cancelled after an internal probe, and a fresh draw was conducted. But 26 applicants were found to have been repeated in both the shortlists, raising more concerns about fairness and the integrity of the system. "Going forward, the Aadhaar-linked system will automatically populate the applicant's details and verify if they have previously been allotted flats under any affordable housing scheme. If found ineligible, their application will be auto-rejected by the system," said Renuka Singh, senior town planner, DTCP. "All past applicant data from earlier schemes is now being integrated into this upgraded software," Singh said. Additionally, the system will prevent any duplicate entries and ensure that no one can bypass eligibility rules. The new mechanism is expected to significantly reduce the administrative burden and potential biases associated with manual data handling. The Aster Avenue 36 matter is currently pending before the Punjab and Haryana high court, and the next hearing is scheduled for July 9. Applicants who were declared successful in the original draw have yet to receive refunds, while allotment letters for 702 flats drawn in the second round remain on hold because of ongoing legal proceedings. Goa Inc supports need for transport aggregators in state

Panaji: Backing govt's Goa transport aggregator guidelines, Goa's industry bodies stated that app-based taxi services will improve workforce mobility and create an investor-friendly environment in Goa. The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Verna Industrial Estate, Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), Assocham, and other industry representatives mentioned that thousands of workers and professionals employed in the state require 'dependable transport' for their daily commute. 'Across sectors—be it tourism, manufacturing, real estate, retail, logistics, or services—businesses in Goa are increasingly dependent on a workforce that requires dependable and safe transport options,' said GCCI president Shrinivas Dempo. The Verna Industries Association noted that the lack of app-based taxi services has posed challenges in terms of accessibility, especially for shift workers, women employees, and those travelling from Goa's hinterland. The industry bodies expressed that the transport department's guidelines strike a well-considered balance between enabling digital transport innovation and protecting the livelihoods of local taxi drivers. The transport department's guidelines require the aggregators to pay drivers the full govt-notified fare, mandating timely payments while also offering health insurance and vehicle subsidies. 'We urge govt to implement the guidelines in a time-bound manner and call upon all stakeholders to participate constructively in building a mobility ecosystem that meets the growing needs of Goa's industrial sector,' said Kalpak Arware, president of Verna Industries Association. Dempo stated that the introduction of taxi services will reduce the reliance on private vehicles, decongest roads, and lower pollution. Assocham Goa Council president Manguirish Pai Raiker urged the taxi operators to collaborate with govt and build a transport ecosystem. Haryana charts green path: Markets with organic produce soon

Gurgaon: The city, along with Hisar, will soon have a dedicated organic produce market. The new initiative will see the city hosting a specialised market focusing on organically produced staples, including wheat, rice and pulses. Hisar will feature a dedicated market for organic fruits and vegetables, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for natural and organic produce in the state. A key highlight of the announcement includes financial assistance of Rs 20,000 per farmer for branding and packaging of natural farming products. The govt will also establish testing laboratories offering free services to farmers to ensure quality control of organic produce. The move aims to encourage more farmers to adopt organic farming methods. The announcement, aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture, came during a World Environment Day programme on Thursday, even as Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini spoke about the state govt's "commitment to eco-friendly farming practices". Saini said, "To ensure fair pricing, a dedicated committee will be formed under the Haryana Farmers' Welfare Authority to determine the rates for natural and organic produce." The scheme is expected to provide organic farmers with direct access to consumers and create a structured marketplace for chemical-free agricultural products. A senior govt official said, "The establishment of these specialised markets is part of govt's broader vision of promoting sustainable agricultural practices and addressing growing consumer demand for organic products." The govt has also introduced measures to support landless farmers. In Kaithal district's Pundri block, 53 acres of agricultural department land will be leased through auction to farmers practising natural farming. Additionally, each village will reserve 10% of panchayat land (or a minimum of one acre) exclusively for natural farming by landless farmers. The govt will also provide financial incentives, including Rs 3,000 per farmer for purchasing storage equipment and a substantial subsidy of Rs 30,000 for native cow purchase, supporting the natural farming ecosystem.
