Wayward marlin enters Cabo San Lucas Marina; it doesn't end well

USA Today08-10-2024
Last summer we shared footage showing a sailfish – described by National Geographic as 'the fastest fish in the ocean' – swimming inside Mexico's Cabo San Lucas Marina.
The rare appearance was brief as the sailfish soon breezed back into bluer offshore waters, where it belonged.
On Sunday a striped marlin was caught on video swimming around the docks in the same marina, at Baja California's tip, in another rare event that did not end well for the billfish. (See footage below.)
'So this happened yesterday… A Striped Marlin made its way into the Cabo Marina in front of our Pisces Office!' Pisces Sportfishing exclaimed Monday via Instagram. 'The Marlin cruised around the slips seemingly confused in the shallow water.
'Of course this caused huge commotion on the docks and unfortunately for the Marlin a group of men caught it later on.'
Pisces spokeswoman Rebecca Ehrenberg told FTW Outdoors that the marlin was gaffed and hauled onto a dock.
Cabo San Lucas is billed as 'The Marlin Capital of the World,' but most encounters occur in the deep blue – and most anglers release the marlin they hook.
But the marina, positioned where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, is occasionally visited by creatures more commonly found in offshore waters.
Ehrenberg said a marlin entered the marina last year, too, and that in late August a school of large squid was captured on video in an 'amazing sight' under the lights at night.
'Right in front of Captain Tony's [restaurant] – calamari anybody,' Pisces joked via Facebook. 'Maybe they came for the music.'
That reel can be viewed via this link or in the player below.

Oklahoma QB John Mateer named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list

The buzz surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners' new starting quarterback, John Mateer. He's been included on a number of watch lists this offseason and is a dark horse candidate to contend for the Heisman Trophy. On Wednesday, Mateer was included on another watch list, this time for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award goes to the offensive player of the year who played his high school or college football in the state of Texas or was born in Texas. Oklahoma Sooners quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray won the awards in back-to-back seasons during their Heisman runs in 2017 and 2018. The two were standout quarterbacks in Texas high school football and started their careers at universities in the state of Texas before transferring to Oklahoma. Mateer could be on a similar path with the Sooners in 2025. Though there are more unknowns on the offensive side of the ball than there were when OU entered the 2017 or 2018 seasons, Mateer could very well be the answer to a lot of the questions with his dual-threat ability. The former three-star quarterback has been lauded for his ability to make plays when things break down and for his competitive drive. And if he's able to translate that to Oklahoma and the SEC, Mateer could end the season in the running for a number of postseason awards. Oklahoma Sooners quarterback named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer isn't new to preseason award watch lists. He's already stockpiled nods for the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Davey O'Brien awards this summer. On Tuesday, his name was added to a fourth watch list, breaking a tie with running back Jaydn Ott for the most recognitions on the team. Mateer and Ott are currently the only players on OU's roster with more than two watch list appearances. Mateer was named to the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on Tuesday. The award is given to the nation's top quarterback who best exemplifies character, scholastic and athletic achievement. Mateer arrives, along with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, from Washington State, where the pair found success together last season. By all accounts, Mateer has been the leader this team needed on the field and in the locker room, and the new offense has the players excited for what this team can do when the Sooners have the ball this fall. Oklahoma is hoping to make some noise in their second season in the SEC. After making big changes all over the program this offseason, including Arbuckle and Mateer, the Sooners need a big season in their fourth year with head coach Brent Venables at the helm. Otherwise, even bigger changes could be coming to Norman next offseason.
