Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes Arthur Sales is a very good player who will be key to the club's success — but he was quick to dispel any suggestion that the lanky forward is a direct replacement for his Brazilian compatriot Lucas Ribeiro.
The Portuguese coach essentially confirmed speculation that Ribeiro will be leaving the club while speaking to the media during the post-match press conference following their 2-0 Betway Premiership victory over AmaZulu on Tuesday night.
Ribeiro — the standout performer of last season and winner of both the Footballer of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards, as well as the Golden Boot for the 2024/25 campaign — is believed to be heading to Qatar.
Sales played on the right-hand side, the very position where Ribeiro previously shone. But Cardoso was quick to play down any expectations or pressure being placed on the younger Brazilian.
'It's important that we understand one thing,' he said.

'Since last year, there's been a lot of misunderstanding around Arthur Sales — people judging. First of all, people should look at him as himself and not imagine that, now he's playing on the right, they'll see Lucas Ribeiro.
'There's no one who is going to be Lucas Ribeiro, and the coach is not looking for someone to be Lucas Ribeiro on the right — because that doesn't exist.'
If ever there was confirmation that the attacker — who also won the award for Best Goal at the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA — is on his way out of Chloorkop, this was surely it.
'Lucas is Lucas, and Arthur is Arthur. Each player has his own characteristics. Arthur is a very good player who arrived in South Africa and wasn't given the attention and credit he deserves.
'Now, gradually, people are starting to understand. And if you look at the numbers — how he impacted the team last year — you'll realise that whenever he came onto the pitch, he was always contributing goals and assists. He was already important last year with the goals he scored.'

Under fire Pirates coach Ouaddou earns support

With Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou under the microscope, club legend Edward Motale has spotted two key areas the team must fix before facing Mamelodi Sundowns. The Sea Robbers fans hoped for a bright start with Ouaddou at the helm, but losses to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants have raised doubts over whether the 46-year-old can turn things around. In the build-up to this weekend's epic MTN8 semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns, Motale has offered a positive preview. Revealed: Three Kaizer Chiefs captains without armbands 'There's lot of positives, there's a lot of good things, I mean you look at the stats, from the previous game they had 18 shots, it shows they are attacking, it's just that they are not scoring,' Motale told . Coach comments on Kaizer Chiefs' current best player 'They just need to work on their scoring chances and the defence,' Motale added. Pirates coach admits he's under pressure ahead of Sundowns tie

'There's always pressure when you train (coach) such a big club. Struggling Orlando Pirates will meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of what has been termed the 'final before the final' this weekend. The two rivals will face off in an MTN8 semi final first leg clash at a sold-out Orlando Stadium on Saturday (kick-off is at 3pm). The Buccaneers lost away to Marumo Gallants in a Betway Premiership clash in Bloemfontein, while the Brazilians eased past AmaZulu at home in Pretoria, beating them 2-0. Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is looking forward to this clash between the 'bigest' clubs in Africa. 'It's a very exciting moment for not only the players, but for the fans as well. A clash of the two biggest teams not only in South Africa, but on the continent as a whole. We're excited and happy to play the game on Saturday and we hope to give a good show to all the supporters in South Africa,' Ouaddou told reporters during an MTN8 media conference at the PSL offices in Parktown on Thursday. Pressure mounts for Ouaddou Having suffered back-to-back defeats against Sekhukhune United and Gallants, going into the clash against Sundowns, Ouaddou admitted that he was under pressure to turn the club's fortunes around. 'There's always pressure when you train (coach) such a big club. Pressure is everywhere, but we have to transform that pressure and make it a positive pressure and we must give our best for our fans. We have to try to bring back the victories and the happiness,' said the Moroccan. Pirates might be struggling in recent matches going into the clash against Sundowns at the Orlando Stadium, but recent cup matches between the sides suggest that the Buccaneers have a slight advantage over their rivals. Cardoso 'living' for the present Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, however, is not reading much into past matches between the sides, saying he is focusing on the future. 'I never look at the past, I live for the present in order to write for the future. I was not even here in South Africa when those cup matches were played between the teams,' said Cardoso. ALSO READ: Cardoso backs Sales amid criticism ahead of Pirates showdown 'It's the first time I'm facing Pirates in a cup match. A team might be doing bad or worse going into this kind of match, but what happened in the past won't count in this kind of match. The players themselves show different levels of playing in these kinds of games, What's important on the day is that the team must show another level in order to win it,' added Cardoso.
