Wiegman backs England's passion ahead of crunch clash against Wales

Leader Live12-07-2025
Sarina Wiegman insists England can match Wales' passion in their crunch clash on Sunday night - but wants her side to focus on themselves.
The Lionesses need a win from their final game in Group D to secure progression to the Euro 2025 quarter-finals.
It means rivals Wales could send England home from the tournament with a positive result on Sunday, as they remain in search of their first major tournament win.
But despite the fight that Wales will undoubtedly bring to St Gallen, Wiegman is confident England are just as enthused by the encounter despite not letting themselves get carried away with the narrative of rivalry.
"For them, it is a big game but for us it is too. We want to win and get through the group stage. There is passion but we have passion too,' she said.
'We want to be really focused and good on the ball. We have to be patient.
"I learned about the history and the rivalry but, again, we are focused on what we want to do and how we want to play.
"We have to move the ball quickly and be patient. We have also seen that Wales are compact and sometimes higher up the pitch too. We expect everything and we will try to break that down."

It is the second time England will face a must-win scenario, having needed all three points against the Netherlands to avoid an early exit after losing their opening game 2-1 to France.
While a draw would put them above the Oranje Leeuwinnen at present, they would need to bank on the Dutch failing to get a result against France for that to be sufficient to progress.
But Wiegman is unphased by the pressure such a scenario adds to her players, who stepped up to win 4-0 at Stadion Letzigrund against the Dutch.
"There is always pressure on England. We will try and play a good game and hopefully we can have the ball a lot and exploit spaces,' she explained.
"The tension is building up again because we play tomorrow. It was a must-win [against the Netherlands].
'The players are very together and are taking responsibility and then they have to perform again. That is what we are going to do tomorrow as well."
Wales will hold very different ideas of what they will allow England to do at Kybunpark.
Despite losing their opening game 3-0 to the Netherlands and looking completely overrun, they fought back to equalise against France in a gritty performance.
At 1-0 down, Jess Fishlock turned home at the back post to spark celebrations in the red wall and write a piece of Welsh history befitting the legacy of the 38-year-old scorer.
While they went on to lose 4-1, it is a fight they will undoubtedly show against England with a sense of last chance saloon for the Dragons.
But Wiegman is determined not to let the game follow a course that will benefit Wales as she hopes England will prove dominant in possession.
"I hope we will see a game where we have a lot of the ball and we play very well in possession, so we don't let it become a fighting game,' she said.
"I am not worried [that it will be a scrappy game]. Wales are very compact, they can fight and they are really together but also they can play direct.
'We are trying to prevent that, and the best way is to be on top of things yourself and exploit the spaces.
"We have our own preparation and we know what is on the line. We will do everything to win the game and get through.'

Toone, 25, also netted in the Finalissima against Brazil — where the European and South American champions face off — and scored an FA Cup final stunner for her club Manchester United last year. Having hardly played or netted in club football last season, she has become a phenomenon on the international stage and will return home to a new level of fame. That is something Toone, now an established starter, went through in 2022 and the Northern lass had some left-field advice for Agyemang. Toone said: 'She might get papped eating a pasty like I did! I'll have to warn her about that. While the players have discussed their 'proper England' performances, Toone revealed there have been some incredibly motivational moments from manager Sarina Wiegman. 'Even though sometimes we have gone a goal down, you still remember the words that she said before the game and it makes you want to go out and put on a performance for the second half as well. Arsenal 'set to ramp up pursuit of Eberechi Eze' after finally landing Viktor Gyokeres as they look to strike £60m deal with Crystal Palace

Arsenal are ready to launch a fresh offensive to land Eberechi Eze after closing in on a deal for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners have fully agreed terms to sign the Sweden International and are expected to officially confirm the £63.5million move any day now – leaving the path clear to turn their full attention to Crystal Palace 's star playmaker. Eze, 27, has been heavily linked with a move away from Selhurst Park this summer after helping the Eagles to their first-ever major trophy last season as he scored the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City. The Gunners appear to be the team most keen to land him but are yet to submit an official bid for the player, as they have been preoccupied with securing Gyokeres. But now, Arsenal are preparing a £60m approach for Eze, possibly spread over three instalments, according to The Independent. This is less than the midfielder's £67m release clause, but it is understood that the club's boardrooms maintain good relations and will negotiate in good faith - a breath of fresh air for Arsenal, who have only now wrapped up their two-month pursuit of Gyokeres. Eze is understood to favour a move to the Emirates, with many close to the situation confident a transfer will go through in the coming weeks. If Arsenal are unwilling to part with a hefty sum of cash, there is a possibility that Reiss Nelson could be included in a deal as a make-weight. Furthermore, while Eze's signing does not hinge on this, Arsenal would prefer to sell one of their assets before splurging on the Palace star. If the north London club were to agree a deal for Eze in the region of £60m, it would take their summer spending past £250m, including Gyokeres. Also joining Mikel Arteta's ranks for the 2025-26 season are Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristian Mosquera, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard.

Former EFL side at risk of being KICKED OUT of National League and set deadline to fix ‘serious financial problems'

MORECAMBE are in danger of being booted out the National League amid huge financial problems. The Shrimps were relegated from League Two last season as they fell out the EFL for the first time since 2007. 1 Morecambe owner Jason Whittingham took over in 2018 but has been looking to sell for the last three years. Despite bids to buy the club, a sale has still not gone through and they are in danger of administration. After transfer bans, point deductions and unpaid wages in recent years, Morecambe now face further punishments and being kicked out the league cannot be ruled out. A statement from the fifth tier read: "The National League continues to have serious concerns surrounding Morecambe Football Club and its compliance with National League rules. "The National League met with Jason Whittingham earlier this week where discussions regarding the club's ability to meet its financial obligations for the 2025/2026 season took place. "The National League's Club Compliance and Licensing Committee wrote to Mr Whittingham on Thursday 24 July 2025 to outline terms that must be met by 12 noon on Monday 28 July 2025. "The National League's Club Compliance and Licensing Committee will reconvene on the afternoon of Monday 28 July 2025 to discuss the matter again and discuss possible further sanctions." It comes after a group named the Panjab Warriors had a takeover bid approved by the EFL in June. The board threatened to put Morecambe into administration to force through the sale. Whittingham responded by sacking the entire board before later inviting them back to oversee the final stages of the takeover. Then just a few days later they resigned when control was still not relinquished by Whittingham. The owner then said a last-gasp bid was made by a group led by Jonny Cato. Fans are still waiting for a sale and legal action is being threatened by a group of minority shareholders. Rugby club Worcester Warriors were expelled from the Premiership under Whittingham's management in 2022.
