The Canadian men's cricket team on Sunday secured its place for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka after a commanding seven-wicket win over the Bahamas in the Americas Qualifiers in Ontario. Canada chased down the modest target of 57 in just 5.3 overs at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City, capping off an unbeaten run with five wins from five matches.Pace bowler Kaleem Sana (3/6) and spinner Shivam Sharma (3/16) dismantled the Bahamas for 56, before Dilpreet Bajwa 's unbeaten 36 sealed the victory.Led by Nicholas Kirton , Canada started their campaign with a thumping 110-run win over Bermuda, followed by dominant wins over the Cayman Islands and Bahamas across both rounds.With this result, Canada joins cricket heavyweights like India, Australia, England, and Pakistan in the tournament. According to the ICC, seven more teams will qualify through regional events in Europe, Africa, and the Asia-East Asia Pacific zones later this year.

A total of 14 teams will feature in the ODI World Cup in a couple of years' time. In the 2023 edition of the men's ODI World Cup, India finished as runners-up under Rohit Sharma's leadership. India won all nine league matches and the semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai on November 15, 2023, to book a place in the summit clash, but in the title decider, they went down by six wickets against the Pat Cummins-led Australian team. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit scored a total of 597 runs to finish as the second-highest run getter. His batting average in the 2023 World Cup was 54.27, and he scored runs with a strike rate of 125.94. In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rohit, with the help of five centuries and one fifty, scored 648 runs. But India failed to qualify for the final under Virat Kohli's leadership. Women's ODI World Cup: Continuity the buzzword for India
New Delhi: There will be little room for surprises as Indian selectors get together to unveil the squad for the upcoming ICC Women's ODI World Cup. (BCCI) With confidence from a memorable ODI away series win in England and plenty of positives to take from the India A squad against Australia A, the core group is likely to be retained. A rejuvenated captain Harmanpreet Kaur will once again be at the helm of a side brimming with batting depth but still searching for some bite with the ball. Harmanpreet's leadership is expected to be complemented by vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who will be featuring in her third World Cup in this format. The left-handed opener, in home conditions where she averages 43.51, remains India's best bet to blunt opposition attacks early. Alongside her, 24-year-old Pratika Rawal has quickly become the team's breakout star. The Delhi batter who only made her debut in December last year has already illustrated her ability to clear the field without slogging and a rather technically sound approach. The intrigue, though, surrounds Shafali Verma. Once India's storm at the top of the order, the 21-year-old found herself at the fringes after a lean patch. She managed to return to the fold with stunning performances in the domestic circuit but coach Amol Muzumdar also made it clear during the England series that while Shafali will be part of the core group, their priority will be Rawal. It's up to the selectors to weigh her ability to take down attacks on her day against her usual inconsistency. The supporting cast is both familiar and reliable – Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol and wicketkeeper-batters Richa Ghosh and Yastika Bhatia. Bhatia may not have featured in the ODIs against England but had a memorable outing against Australia A, finishing as the leading run-scorer for India with 167 runs in three matches. Deepti Sharma, India's experienced professional, has also upped her batsmanship and will be a solid aide to the batting line-up. Along with Deepti, Amanjot Kaur's utility with both bat and ball offers a balance that India were seeking, especially in the pace department. Sneh Rana's comeback since the Women's Premier League last year has only seen an upward climb. India look well stocked in all-round versatility. The batting offers options aplenty but bowling remains the nagging worry. Renuka Singh Thakur's fitness is the single-biggest question mark. The seamer's ability to swing the new ball has been India's biggest weapon in recent years, and without her, the attack has looked slightly short on menace. Should she slot back in, the seam group of Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Gaud and Sayali Satghare will look far more assured. Spin, on the other hand, is India's comfort blanket. On turning pitches at home, Deepti, Rana are seasoned campaigners at tying down batters. Leg-spinner N Shree Charani and left-arm spinner (and superhuman fielder) Radha Yadav, who has also been on a bit of a comeback trail of her own, can bolster a fearsome spin attack. Yadav came in as a replacement to injured Shuchi Upadhyay and ticked quite a few boxes against England. She took it a notch higher with both the bat and the ball as she led India A against Australia A. The selectors' job now is more about fine tuning. The batting core appears locked in; the only question being whether the management is willing to roll the dice on Shafali, even as back-up. The pace bowling largely hinges on Renuka's recovery. But in home conditions, with Mandhana, Rawal, Jemimah and Deepti in their prime and potentially some X-factor picks in Ghosh, Kranti and Amanjot, India have a chance to mount a title challenge like never before.

Test captain Shubman Gill is reportedly unlikely to make the cut, while other stars like Shreyas Iyer may also not make it to the final 15. However, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has included both Gill and Iyer in his 15-man squad for the Asia Cup. Harbhajan has also made some bold calls, leaving out three regular members of India's T20I setup. Harbhajan opted to pick Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul as his two wicket-keeper batters. This meant that he didn't go with Sanju Samson, who has been a consistent opener for India over the past year in T20Is. Harbhajan also, perhaps surprisingly, left out mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy from his team. Instead, Harbhajan went for Kuldeep Yadav as his main spinner, as well as all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar as his other spin-bowling options. Harbhajan stated that the inclusion of Shubman Gill is a must, and that his capabilities in T20Is should not be underestimated. "Yes, we do have players like Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, but you cannot undermine or underestimate Shubman Gill. He is a very talented batter who can adapt to any format. He is an all-format player," Harbhajan stated, in an interview with Times of India. "In my opinion, he can play T20s and even dominate the format. We as fans are used to seeing fours and sixes every ball, but you also need batters who can play long innings and rescue the team when required," Harbhajan added. The former India spinner, who was part of India's T20 World Cup 2007-winning squad, also put in a rogue shout. Harbhajan left out Tilak Varma, the No. 2-ranked batter in the ICC T20I rankings. In his place, Harbhajan picked Shreyas Iyer, and even found place for all-rounder Riyan Parag in his 15. India's hero at The Oval, Mohammed Siraj, is reportedly expected to miss out of the 15-man squad, with Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana ahead of him in the pecking order. However, Harbhajan included Siraj. The Asia Cup 2025 begins on September 9. India begin their campaign against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 10. The final is on September 28.
