The capabilities of the 296 Speciale in terms of agility, turn-in precision, and stability place it in a class of its own. This special version not only amplifies the already outstanding performance of the 296 GTB, but also introduces a level of predictability and intuitiveness that elevates the driving experience to new heights. Conceived for the Ferrarista who demands an unrivalled driving experience, the 296 Speciale represents the new pinnacle for the Ferrari production range in terms of driving fun and is dedicated to owners in search of that special feeling of being at the wheel of a car with extraordinary performance.
The 296 Speciale takes the agility and responsiveness of the 296 GTB to extreme new heights by exploiting the full potential of its plug-in hybrid architecture, consisting of a rear-mid 120° V6 twin turbo engine and an electric motor, a short wheelbase and innovative dynamic control systems. The drivetrain delivers an astonishing combined power output of 880 hp, 50 more than the 296 GTB and a record for a rear-wheel-drive production Ferrari.
To make these results possible, Ferrari drew extensively from its experience in motor sports: the internal combustion engine borrows from the powerplant of the 296 Challenge in terms of engine management maps and boost strategy, and boasts titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons and a lightened crankshaft. All these elements, together with a knock control system derived from Formula 1, have raised the power output of the V6 to 700 cv, 37 more than the model this special version is based on. The V6 engine of the 296 Speciale maintains its distinctive timbre, a sound consisting of the pure harmonics of the 3rd, 6th, and 9th combustion orders which, in this application, have gained in quality, intensity and volume.
The electric motor has also been uprated and is now capable of delivering 180 cv in the new extra boost mode. This increase in power has also made it possible to introduce a new strategy for the eight-speed DCT transmission, which makes use of additional torque during shifts to shorten shift times and increase both performance and driver engagement.
The 296 Speciale generates 435 kg of downforce at 250 km/h – 20% more than the 296 GTB – thanks to innovative solutions developed and tested on the 296 Challenge. These include the aero damper integrated into the front bonnet and the vertical fins on the rear bumper which incorporate new side wings that work in synergy with the active rear spoiler to generate additional downforce. The spoiler is now managed by a new actuator control strategy that not only shortens the transition time between Low Drag (LD) and High Downforce (HD) configurations by 50% but also introduces a new Medium Downforce (MD) configuration, which improves rear-end stability at high speeds.
A great deal of attention was dedicated to saving weight, which is crucial for increasing driving thrills. Overall weight has been reduced by 50 kg compared with the 296 GTB by using materials such as carbon fibre for some of the bodyshell parts and titanium for components in the engine. The resulting weight/power ratio is just 1.69 kg/cv, a record for a rear-wheel-drive Ferrari berlinetta.
To accentuate the dynamic capabilities of the 296 Speciale and ensure that the car behaves predictably when driven at the limit, Ferrari's engineers also worked on fine-tuning the electronic control systems, suspension set-up and tyres. The 296 Speciale is equipped with the latest generation of the ABS Evo dynamic control system, which improves braking precision and repeatability in all surface and grip conditions. The spring and damper settings have been revised – the car now rides 5 mm lower than the 296 GTB – reducing maximum roll angle when cornering by 13% and improving the behaviour of the car at the limit.

Series leader Oscar Piastri erased 'miserable' memories on Saturday as he outpaced team-mate Lando Norris to deliver McLaren's first front row lockout at the Spanish Grand Prix since 1998. The 24-year-old Australian, who leads Norris by three points in the drivers' championship, clocked a final lap in one minute 11.546 seconds to beat Norris by two-tenths of a second, the biggest winning pole margin this year. It brought him his fourth pole this season and fourth of his career and set up the two McLaren men as clear favourites for Sunday's race — 31 of the 34 Spanish Grands Prix to date having been won by a car starting on the front row. 'It's been a good weekend so far. It didn't start off in the best way. We were struggling a little last night, but we found some pace and the car has been mega,' said Piastri. 'I feel like I was able to put in some fast laps as well so thank you to the team for all the hard work. Piastri bounces back in second practice at Spanish GP
Series leader Oscar Piastri bounced back after being outpaced in opening practice to top the times for McLaren ahead of Mercedes' George Russell in Friday's second session at the Spanish Grand Prix. Norris beats Leclerc to Monaco pole, Hamilton demoted
Lando Norris put Formula One champions McLaren on pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix in track-record time on Saturday, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc alongside on the front row for his home race. Norris's championship-leading team mate and rival Oscar Piastri qualified third for an often processional fixture that has been won only 10 times since 1950 by a driver starting lower than third. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton was fourth fastest after crashing in final practice, but the seven-times world champion was then handed a three-place drop for impeding Red Bull's Max Verstappen. That moved Verstappen, twice a Monaco winner, up to fourth instead. Norris was quickest initially after two flying laps on the soft tyres in the final phase when they went out on track earlier than rivals. He then had to go even faster with a late third attempt to deny Leclerc, who had gone top with his final effort but ended up 0.109 slower, a fourth Monaco pole in five years. The Briton did it with a stunning effort of one minute 09.954 seconds around the treacherous and twisty metal-fenced streets, a big moment for his title hopes. "It's been a long time coming. I feel good. I don't think you realise how good this feels after quite a few struggles in the last few months," said Norris, whose qualifying pace has been a weak point. "Monaco is a beautiful place. The hardest track to do it and up against the hometown hero." The pole was Norris's career 11th, second of the season and first since the opener in Australia, a race he won. Norris is 13 points behind Piastri after seven races but overtaking is very difficult in Monaco, although a second pitstop is mandatory this year, and pole position in the principality is a huge advantage. "I think I've hit more walls this weekend than in my whole career. I've just been struggling to get into the groove," commented Piastri. "We have been doing some digging this weekend and to come out with a third is pretty good." Leclerc, quickest in all three practice sessions, had been fastest through the first phase but Norris was quicker in the second. "We know that we don't quite have the car to go for wins this year but this weekend the car felt good and starting second here, it's going to be tricky to take that first place," said the Monegasque. French rookie Isack Hadjar will start fifth for Racing Bulls with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso sixth and Esteban Ocon eighth for Haas. Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson qualified ninth and Alexander Albon completed the top 10 for Williams. Qualifying turned into a nightmare for Mercedes, with Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli crashing and qualifying 15th while George Russell's car stopped in the tunnel with a suspected electrical problem. Russell, fourth in the standings and one of only four drivers to have scored in every race this season, will start 14th. The session was red-flagged with 10 minutes to run in the second phase as marshals pushed the Mercedes out into the sunlight and down an escape road. "I hit a bump on the run out of Turn One and lost power. It felt like something electronic just disconnected," said Russell. "I tried everything I could to get the car back to the garage and then restart it when I stopped in the tunnel. Unfortunately, there was nothing more we could do." Oliver Bearman, who collected a 10-place grid penalty in Friday practice for failing to slow under red flags, was only 17th fastest. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll, who already had a one-place drop from Friday practice, picked up a further three-place penalty for impeding Alpine's Pierre Gasly. Gasly should now start 17th with Argentine rookie teammate Franco Colapinto 18th.
