Edmonton police officer pulled over for traffic control gets rear-ended by semi

An Edmonton police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries early Thursday after being rear-ended by a double-trailer semi truck while pulled over doing traffic control on Anthony Henday Drive near Sherwood Park.

Extra duty detail officers were facilitating a vessel move in the southbound lanes of the Henday, just south of the Whitemud Drive overpass, around 2:40 a.m., when the semi struck the officer's stationary marked patrol vehicle with overhead emergency lights activated, police said in a news release.

EMS responded, treated and transported the lone officer in the police vehicle to hospital with seemingly non-life-threatening injuries. The officer has since been released. No other injuries were reported.

Major Collision Investigations Section (MCIS) is now investigating this collision. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The driver of the semi remained on scene.

'When incidents like this occur, we must reinforce our message asking motorists to slow down when approaching an emergency vehicle or tow truck with emergency lights activated,' says acting Staff Sergeant Brad Harsch with MCIS.

'Conducting vehicle stops or traffic control are risks police regularly navigate, but it is important for motorists to recognize the hazards and the potential consequences a member of the public or officer can face if traffic laws are not followed. We are thankful our officer is alive and apparently not seriously injured.'

Motorists are asked to please remain focused on the safe operation of their vehicles and the traffic around them.

Further, Alberta's Traffic Safety Act (TSA) requires drivers to slow down to 60 km/h when passing emergency vehicles and tow trucks with emergency lights engaged and working roadside, said police. If possible, drivers should provide one lane of space on multi-lane roadways.

An investigation is underway into a fatal collision involving a pedestrian in Edmonton Friday afternoon. At around 3:30 p.m., a 60-year-old man was walking north on the curb parallel to the southbound lanes on 50 Street near 40 Avenue. A Toyota Tundra driven by a 39-year-old man driving south in the curb lane along 50 Street hit the pedestrian when, police were told, the man stepped into the southbound lane. EMS and EPS personnel tried lifesaving measures on scene and the injured man was transported to hospital where he died. The driver of the Tundra wasn't injured and remained on scene. Police believe neither excessive speed or alcohol are factors in the collision.

Child dies in collision between bicycle and vehicle in Ogema, Sask.

A child has died after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike in Ogema, Sask. on Thursday. Coronach RCMP first received a report of a serious collision at the intersection of Bradley Street and Saskatchewan Avenue around 5:30 p.m., according to a news release from Saskatchewan RCMP. Local fire and EMS crews also responded to the scene, with investigation determining the a vehicle and a child on a bicycle collided. EMS declared the child, a boy under the age of 10, dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene while investigation took place. RCMP say the child's family has been notified. A collision reconstructionist and Coronach RCMP continue to investigate the collision's cause. Ogema, Sask. is located about 116 kilometres south of Regina.

Homicide detectives investigating west Edmonton death

An Edmonton Police Service cruiser and an ambulance. (Matt Marshall/CTV News Edmonton) Edmonton homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a man in west Edmonton on Friday. According to a news release, police were called to a dispute in the area of 81 Avenue and Briarwynd Court at 12:15 a.m. A man in medical distress was located at the scene. EMS tried to save the man, but he died at the scene. An autopsy has not yet been scheduled. Anyone with information about the man's death is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
