Wondering if David Muir is leaving ABC World News Tonight? The award-winning journalist has anchored the network's flagship evening news program since 2014 and remains one of the most trusted faces in American television. Recent rumors and a brief on-air absence sparked speculation about his future with ABC—but is there any truth to the buzz?
Here's what we know about David Muir's current status at ABC and the facts behind the departure chatter.
David Muir has not announced any plans to leave ABC World News Tonight. He continues to serve as anchor of the broadcast, a role he has held since 2014 after taking over from Diane Sawyer.
Rumors of Muir's departure circulated in late 2024 following his brief absence in August, during which weekend anchors Whit Johnson and Linsey Davis temporarily filled in. However, Muir later posted photos from a vacation in Italy, confirming he was on a scheduled break.
The speculation increased after a YouTube video claimed Muir would soon exit ABC. The video appeared to contain AI-generated content and altered visuals, casting doubt on its credibility. No verified source has supported the claim.
On May 12, 2025, Muir appeared on ABC World News Tonight as usual, covering major stories including a temporary U.S.-China tariff truce and updates in the Sean 'Diddy' Combs trial. He remains actively involved in anchoring duties and reporting key national and international news.
Muir also shared a farewell message to NBC anchor Lester Holt, who recently announced his exit from NBC Nightly News to take on a full-time role with Dateline. Muir posted two photos with Holt and wrote: 'Lester is a true gentleman… I'm going to miss that. And I'll miss bumping into you on all those flights!'
Holt confirmed in a staff memo: 'After 10 years, 17 if you include my years on the weekends, the time has come for me to step away from my role as anchor of Nightly News.' He added, 'I will be continuing as anchor of Dateline NBC, but for the first time in a full time capacity.'
No statement or evidence has confirmed that David Muir is leaving ABC News. He continues to anchor World News Tonight and co-hosts 20/20.

Pro-Trump Gen Z influencer takes credit for helping ICE detain TikTok star Khaby Lame

Bo Loudon, a conservative Gen Z influencer who has called Donald Trump's son Barron Trump his 'best friend,' is taking credit for helping Immigration and Customs Enforcement briefly detain Italian-Senegalese social media star Khaby Lame, the world's most-followed person on TikTok. In a statement to USA Today on Sunday, an ICE spokesperson confirmed that Lame, whose full name is Seringe Khabane Lame, was detained on Friday at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas for 'immigration violations.' The 25-year-old, who has more than 160 million followers on TikTok, was born in Senegal but moved as a child to Italy, where he is now a citizen. According to ICE, he entered the U.S. on April 30 and 'overstayed the terms of his visa.' After a brief detention, the agency said, Lame was granted voluntary departure, which allows an individual facing removal to leave the U.S. voluntarily in a set time frame, rather than being ordered to be deported. Lame has not addressed his detention on social media and did not respond to a request for comment from The New York Times. After losing his factory job during the Covid pandemic, Lame began posting silent skits reacting to 'life-hack' videos on TikTok, quickly gaining a following. He has held the title of the most-followed user on the platform since June 2022, when he surpassed dancer Charli D'Amelio. On Friday, before Lame's detention was widely reported, Loudon alleged he played a role in the influencer's interaction with immigration authorities. 'I've been working with the patriots at President Trump's DHS to make this happen,' Loudon, 18, wrote on X. In a video posted on Monday, Loudon alleged he heard from a 'few of his friends' and 'business partners' that Lame had overstayed his visa. 'I just called some buddies in the administration, and I've never seen anything happen so quick,' Loudon alleged. 'They were like, 'We're gonna get right on this.'' Loudon wished Lame 'the best of luck' and said he hopes 'he's able to come back as a law-abiding citizen.' Bo Loudon is the son of former Republican Missouri state Sen. John Loudon and conservative media personality Gina Loudon, who served as co-chair of Women for Trump. The 18-year-old frequently posts photos of himself with both the president and Barron Trump on his social media pages. During Trump's presidential campaign, Loudon was said to have played a role in helping the 78-year-old court young male voters. Loudon said he helped set up Trump's interviews with Adin Ross and Joe Rogan. 'It was the honor of my life to be able to organize and attend the LEGENDARY stream between Rightful President Trump and my friend @AdinRoss,' Loudon wrote at the time. 'GEN-Z STANDS WITH TRUMP!' Celebrities tell all about aging, marriage and Beyoncé in these 10 bingeable memoirs "That lays open what I think 'Dateline' has exposed over the years, which is one of the worst epidemics we have: the epidemic of spousal abuse, of women being harmed by men.
