Shah Rukh Khan once introduced wife Gauri Khan as 'Ayesha', jokingly asked her to wear a 'burqa' – Here's why
Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan have always been seen as one of Bollywood's most admired couples. The two got married on 25 October 1991 after years of dating and are proud parents to Aryan, Suhana and AbRam Khan.
Their love story stands out for how they've embraced each other's beliefs with respect and humour, showing that love goes beyond religion.
The whispering guests at the wedding
In a throwback episode of the '
Farida Jalal
Show', Shah Rukh shared an unforgettable moment from their wedding reception. He remembered how several guests, especially elders from his extended family, were quietly discussing whether Gauri would change her religion after marriage.
The 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' actor recalled, 'I remember when their whole family, old-fashioned people, were sitting there, whispering in Punjabi, 'Will he change the girl's name? Will she become a Muslim?''
To lighten the mood and poke fun at the whispers, SRK pulled a cheeky prank.
He told Gauri, 'Put on your 'burqa' and let's read the namaaz now.' He continued, 'From now on, she will wear a burqa all the time, never leave the house, and her name will be Ayesha.' The guests were taken aback at first, but soon realised it was a joke. The 'Chennai Express' actor then explained that it was all said in humour and not meant seriously.
He further said, 'I had a lot of fun, but the lesson in all of this was that one should respect religion but it should not come in the way of love.
But, it was a great wedding and it's still going on strong.'
No space for religious differences at their home
The 'Om Shanti Om' actor had again spoke about religion and family during an appearance on the dance reality show 'Dance Plus 5' in 2020. He shared that his family never discusses religious differences at home. 'We have never discussed Hindu-Muslim in our home. My wife is Hindu, I am Muslim, and our kids are Hindustan.'
He also shared how their children see themselves, 'When my kids were asked at school what religion they belonged to, they wrote 'Indian'.'
SRK's next big film
On the work front, Shah Rukh was last seen in Rajkumar Hirani's 'Dunki', where he starred with Taapsee Pannu,
Boman Irani
and
Vicky Kaushal
. Up next, fans are excited for his film 'King', in which he will be seen alongside his daughter,

Indian-origin Huma Abedin took a muddy shuttle bus ride on wedding day to marry billionaire Alex Soros
Indian-origin author Huma Abedin, longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, recently married investor Alex Soros, one of billionaire George Soros's five children, at the couple's home in New York. Speaking to Vogue about the wedding, Abedin revealed that despite their opulent wedding ceremony, one of the memorable moments was taking a shuttle bus to the event after it rained hard the night before, and on that day. "The ground was wet and muddy, so we had to ride over to protect the dress from getting wet. We had a brief window of time when it wasn't going to rain. I couldn't sit, so I didn't wrinkle the dress. So there we were, cramming into a shuttle," she said. Abedin said that fashion icon and Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, held her veil on a hanger and told the driver to leave before the rain starts. "Not only did it give me no nerves heading to the ceremony, it made the whole situation just comical," she added. Abedin revealed that she and Alex Soros had planned to elope, but the plan changed at an engagement party co-hosted by former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton. She added that Clinton and Wintour "instructed" them to have a wedding. Born to an Indian father and a Pakistani mother, Abedin began working for the former first lady at the age of 19. The wedding guest list included Bill and Hillary Clinton, former US Vice President Kamala Harris, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. They held two ceremonies to celebrate their union. The first was an intimate gathering at Soros's father's home in Southampton, where close friends and family witnessed the signing of the Nikah and Ketubah, honouring Abedin's Muslim faith and Soros's Jewish heritage. In place of gifts, the couple encouraged guests to support Vow for Girls, an organisation dedicated to helping girls stay in school, choose when to marry, and shape their own futures.
