Lengthy dispute between Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles over TV rights fees finally ends

CNN03-03-2025

Major League Baseball announced Monday the end of a long-running saga over the Washington Nationals' television rights between the 20-year-old DC team and the nearby Baltimore Orioles.
'For the 2025 season, Washington Nationals games will continue to be televised locally exclusively by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) under a new, one-year contract,' the league said in a statement.
'After this term, the Nationals will be free to explore alternatives for their television rights for the 2026 season and beyond. As part of the settlement, all disputes related to past media rights between the Nationals, Orioles, and MASN have been resolved, and all litigation will be dismissed.'
No financial agreements were made public in Monday's announcement.
The announcement puts an end to a dispute that has existed as long as the Nationals themselves.
When Washington, DC, was announced as the new home of the then-Montreal Expos franchise, the Baltimore Orioles were confronted with a new team moving in on territory that had largely belonged to Baltimore since the Washington Senators moved to Texas in the early 1970s. As part of the concessions to the Orioles, the Nationals' TV rights were awarded to the Orioles-owned TV network that became Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).
MASN would then pay the Nationals a fee for those rights in five-year increments, according to the agreement. But those payments would become the source of litigation and spats between the two franchises.
Disagreements over the value of Nationals' TV rights have largely been ongoing since 2012. The complicated TV rights situation has been cited as one of the reasons that the Lerner family-owned franchise was not able to find a buyer for the Nats when the family announced it was exploring a sale in 2022.
The league said Monday that it hopes the announcement of an agreement would be an amicable end to the ordeal.
'The Nationals and Orioles extend their gratitude to Commissioner Manfred and his team at MLB for their efforts in bringing this matter to a successful conclusion,' the statement read. 'Both Clubs thank our fans for their support and look forward to continuing their partnership with MASN for the upcoming season.'
The Orioles declined to comment to CNN on specific questions about the end of the dispute.
'We are excited to have this longstanding issue resolved and look forward to the season ahead,' said David Rubenstein, Baltimore principal owner and team control person, in a statement.
The end of the relationship between the Nationals and MASN could mean a new influx of cash into the Washington franchise, which has dramatically cut back on spending since its World Series victory in 2019. The regional sports network run by Washington Wizards and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, Monumental Sports Network, is expected to be a potential top bidder for the 2026 season and beyond.
The Nationals did not immediately respond to follow-up questions from CNN.

Washington Nationals Call Up Bruce the Bat Dog

While Brady House has not been called up yet, the Nationals are bringing another top prospect. After a couple years of grinding in Rochester Bruce the Bat Dog is getting called up to the Big Leagues. Our furry little friend will be making his MLB debut on June 14th against the Marlins. This could be a history making moment for the Golden Retriever community. Bruce could be the first of many to take the Big Leagues by storm. My favorite part of all this is the hilarious video that the Nationals put out of Rochester manager Matt Lecroy giving Bruce the call to the show. Lecroy does such a great job in it, as he does with all his regular call up videos and Bruce was such a good boy. This was just too good of a story not to write about. Seeing the dog go and get the bats is so adorable. June 14th is a pups in the park day, so hopefully Bruce can be a fixture at those events. When I asked my dog Leo for a comment, he said he was very excited about this. Good job by the Nats for making this happen because it is very cute. They better win for Bruce the Bat Dog when he is in the building. We can't let him down. Zac Gallen, Diamondbacks staying optimistic despite brutal campaign

The post Zac Gallen, Diamondbacks staying optimistic despite brutal campaign appeared first on ClutchPoints. Just two years ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks made an improbable run to the World Series. But, in 2025, they've been struggling immensely and at this rate, won't even make the playoffs. Torey Lovullo's ball club sits in third place in the NL West with a 32-34 record. To make matters worse, the Diamondbacks just lost Corbin Burnes to season-ending Tommy John surgery. There is the possibility Arizona will sell at the trade deadline if things don't improve, but starter Zac Gallen made it clear there's really no panic in the locker room. They remain optimistic about a turnaround. Via Sports Illustrated: 'We have a good vibe in the clubhouse. Everybody's fine with where we're at. We just know we need to play better,' Said Gallen. 'I think the only concern is that we're just not playing up to the standard that we expect of ourselves, really.' Gallen believes the Diamondbacks can make a late-season surge like they have before: 'We weren't over .500 until game 90-something last year… I think you guys have seen what this team can do from a win-loss standpoint from when we've backed ourselves in the hole. 'One of the big things that Torey talked about is winning the inch. So I think just being a little bit more consistent… I think a lot of teams thought 2023 was a fluke, and then 2024, I think teams realized that '23 wasn't a fluke,' Gallen said. 'I think we've just got to take it up a notch and, like I said, just be a little bit more consistent.' Gallen does make a valid point. They're only two games below .500 as we speak and didn't move above .500 until late in the 2024 campaign. There's no question the Diamondbacks have the talent to be a playoff team. Many of the same players remain from the Fall Classic run, and the reality is that many of them simply aren't living up to expectations. That includes Gallen, who has an ERA over five so far. Merrill Kelly is the only consistent starter right now outside of Burnes, who is done for the year. Gallen, Brandon Pfaadt, and Eduardo Rodriguez all need to be a whole lot better if this group is going to be competitive. On a more positive note, the Diamondbacks ended a three-game skid on Monday night as Josh Naylor hit a walk-off Grand Slam. Offense has been a strength — pitching just needs to catch up. They will face the Seattle Mariners again on Tuesday evening. Mets, Padres urged to make Luis Robert Jr. trade

The post Mets, Padres urged to make Luis Robert Jr. trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets and San Diego Padres are teams vying to make a World Series appearance this season. Both teams lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 MLB Postseason and are trying to improve their lineup to make another run this time around. Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. is a player to keep an eye on ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. There is quite literally no point in the White Sox keeping him on the roster, and a change of scenery is best for both sides. The Mets and Padres are two teams who could make a move for the outfielder, and according to ESPN, are urged to do so. Robert Jr. is not having a good season with the White Sox, but he has the potential to be a very good player. Injuries have taken over his career, and he has yet to really play a full season in the majors. In 2023, he played 145 games, which is the most in his career by a ton. The only other time he played at least 100 games was last season in their historically terrible campaign. This year, Robert Jr. is batting just .177 with five home runs and 24 RBIs. His Slugging Percentage is just .281, and he has a WAR of -0.1. He desperately needs a change of scenery. The Cuba native could be a great fit for the Padres. Bradford Doolittle of ESPN broke it down: 'The Padres have rolled out a motley collection of non-producers in left field, which has yielded them an overall slash line of .200/.248/.286 with four homers at the position. Upgrade opportunity! Luis Robert Jr. might work if the Padres are convinced he has nowhere to go but up, as his .546 OPS is barely above that of the Padres' left fielders. However, A.J. Preller handles it, San Diego can't leave this hole unfilled.' As for the Mets, they need a center fielder. Doolittle thinks Robert Jr. could be a good fit for them, and he would play on the East Coast closer to home. 'Center is an obvious position of need for New York, which seems like a great landing spot for Luis Robert Jr.' It's unclear if the White Sox are motivated to want to move him right now, so closer to the deadline makes more sense. For now, the Padres aim to even the series against the Dodgers on Tuesday, and the Mets begin a series against the Washington Nationals.
