Dubai court commutes imprisonment of a worker, upholds deportation verdict

The Court of First Instance sentenced an Asian worker to six months in jail to be followed by deportation for assaulting his workmate with a wooden stick, causing him a permanent disability of 20 per cent following a verbal altercation between them.
The Court of Appeal, however, reduced the sentence to a stay of execution but upheld the deportation decision.
The case dated back to September last year when a worker in a construction site reported to the police that his workmate had been assaulted by another workmate who hit him on the head with a wooden stick, causing him to lose his balance and fall to the ground, bleeding.
The man stated that while trying to rest during the afternoon, the victim lied on a plastic bag but the defendant pulled the bag, alleging that it belonged to him.
This led to a verbal altercation between the victim and the defendant that snowballed into a fight, he added, noting that the defendant subsequently picked up a wooden stick from the worksite and hit the victim on the head, causing him to fall on the ground.
An ambulance took victim to the hospital for the necessary medical treatment and the police was notified of what happened.
According to the forensic report of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Dubai Police, the assault caused fractures in the left parietal and temporal bones of the skull, which deprived the brain of its natural protection and made it vulnerable to infections, spasms or bruises. The fractures caused an estimated permanent disability of about 20 per cent to the victim, it added.
During the court session, the defendant denied intentionally hitting the victim, pleading that he was acting in self-defence. It was the victim who started it as he came to his room during the break and started assaulting him, he added, noting that he hit him with a wooden stick on the head to defend himself.

Court also ordered the driver to pay Dhs200,000 in full blood money (diyah) to the heirs of the electric bike rider. The incident dates back to January when Dubai Police received a report of a run-over accident in the Marsa Drive area. A policeman testified that he rushed to the scene and found the victim lying lifeless on the ground next to his electric bike, along with the driver of the vehicle responsible for the accident. The policeman added that after inspection, it was determined that the vehicle driver was responsible for the accident as he entered the road without ensuring it was clear, colliding with the electric bike rider, who was in the correct lane. This was affirmed through an examination of the accident site and CCTV footage, the policeman added. On being questioned, the suspect denied causing the victim's death, claiming that the victim was riding his electric bike at high speed and was not wearing reflective clothing, making it difficult to spot him. The court found the suspect's fault proved, as he failed to exercise caution while driving, adding that by entering the road without ensuring it was clear, he collided with the electric bike, which was in its correct lane, causing severe injuries to the rider which led to his death.

Court jails 2 for abusing drugs at Dubai Taxi labour accommodation
Dubai Misdemeanour Court sentenced two Asian nationals to three months in jail, to be followed by deportation, and banned them from transferring or depositing any funds to others, either personally or through intermediaries, without prior approval from the Central Bank of the UAE, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior. The ban will remain in effect for two years after the completion of their sentence. The suspects were charged with abusing narcotics in a labour accommodation. The incident dates back to January 2025 when a supervisor at a Dubai Taxi labour accommodation filed a report stating that during a routine inspection, he found the two suspects in their room consuming a substance suspected to be narcotics, appearing in an abnormal state. He added that one of the suspects admitted their coworker had provided the substance for Dhs10 so both were detained, and the police were notified. A policeman stated in the interrogations that the suspects were arrested, and a cigarette containing a suspected narcotic substance was found in their possession. They were reportedly taken to the General Directorate of Anti-Narcotics, where samples were collected and sent to the Dubai Police Forensic Laboratory for analysis. Lab results affirmed that the seized substance was a dried herbal narcotic listed in the drug schedule, which had been stuffed into a cigarette. Additionally, the suspects' samples tested positive for narcotics. The first suspect claimed the substance belonged to the second, who confessed that another coworker, who was later arrested and tried, had supplied the narcotic for Dhs10, after he asked him to collect the substance from an African national.

Dubai merchant who owes Dhs13.6 million declared bankrupt
Dubai Civil Court of Appeal upheld the bankruptcy of a merchant and appointed an expert to liquidate his assets and settle his obligations to creditors. The decision came after all previous attempts to resolve his financial situation had been exhausted and he had ceased to pay his debts. The case dated back to May 2024, when a merchant (the debtor) filed a request to initiate bankruptcy proceedings, citing his deteriorating financial situation and failure to pay his debts for over 30 working days. The debtor had previously filed an insolvency application with Dubai Courts, but the court rejected his request after reviewing the accounting expert's report. The debtor appealed the verdict, but the Court of Appeal upheld the decision issued by the Court of First Instance and rejected the appeal in form and content. The case papers indicated that, in light of the merchant's ongoing financial difficulties, he once again filed for bankruptcy. The Court of First Instance reviewed the application and appointed an expert to assess his financial situation. The court ordered the debtor to submit all documents relating to the companies he was associated with and the percentage of his shares in them. These companies were found to be affiliated with a food company. The court decided to accept the request to initiate bankruptcy proceedings and the trustee began his task and prepared a final list of accepted debts including four creditors with total claims amounting to Dhs13.6 million. While no grievances were filed against the list, some banks requested that the case be dismissed for not meeting the legal requirements stipulated in article 73 of the bankruptcy law. The court, however, continued the proceedings and issued its ruling declaring the merchant's bankrupt, with the trustee still appointed to carry out inventory and liquidation operations and distribute the proceeds to creditors. Dr. Alaa Nasr, the merchant's legal representative, said that the verdict includes exempting the debtor of the task of managing his funds and ordering him to hand over all documents and assets to the trustee within five days. The court also ordered a seizure of all his balances and properties including bank accounts, real estate and vehicles on a precautionary basis, while assigning the competent authorities to disclose any property belonging to him. In addition, the court obligated him to submit the financial statements and profits of the companies in which he owned shares.
