MANCHESTER was the location for this year's PFA awards — although there was a noticeable lack of representation from the two local clubs.
It was the third time this glittering bash — previously staged in London — has been held in the north-west city.

And incredibly, for the third time in succession, there was not a single Manchester United player in the men's Premier League PFA team of the year.
It sums up what a mess it has been at Old Trafford recently. You have to go back to 2022 for the last United player to feature in the line-up and, even then, it was left to Cristiano Ronaldo to fly the flag for the club.
There were also no players in the team of the season from Manchester City, illustrating what a disappointing year it was for Pep Guardiola.
Yet if the opening day of the season is anything to go by, City's players could be in the conversation for awards at the end of this campaign.

And despite Sunday's 1-0 loss to Arsenal, there were still some hugely encouraging signs at Old Trafford for United supporters.
Maybe Benjamin Sesko will take English football by storm too, having arrived from RB Leipzig.
What seems certain is the PFA team of the year in 12 months' time will not include a United keeper - unless they sign a new No 1, which looks unlikely.
Frustratingly for supporters of both City and United, it was Liverpool's players who arrived in Manchester to bask in the glory of being at the very top of their profession.

Mohamed Salah became the first player to win the award for a third time after another brilliant season helped Arne Slot win the title at the first attempt.
Unsurprisingly, Liverpool had skipper Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Salah in the team of the year.

Salah, 33, had 29 top-flight goals and a career-best 18 assists as he claimed his fourth golden boot and second Premier League title for the Reds.
Also in the top XI — as voted for by fellow Premier League players — was Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez who is now at Anfield.
One person desperate to head to Merseyside, too, is Alexander Isak — and he featured in the dream team after a terrific season on Tyneside.
For Nottingham Forest to have keeper Matz Sels and forward Chris Wood selected was a reminder of what a stunning campaign they enjoyed. Arsenal, who again finished second, saw William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice picked.
It was no surprise none of Arsenal's forwards made the final XI, though. Maybe, Viktor Gyokeres could feature next time, yet he will have to do better than in Sunday's 1-0 win.

Arsenal's PFA success
At Manchester Opera House, Arsenal did have some success as Spanish star Mariona Caldentey was overall women's winner.
With the closing date for the PFA awards now June 8 — rather than mid-March — members are able to give a much better, balanced vote.
The previous event in London was a sit-down dinner often in April, so it did not reflect the entire season.
After taking over as PFA chief exec, Maheta Molango scrapped the boozy dinner and replaced it with this 90-minute show in a theatre.

Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers was young player of the year, while Burnley's James Trafford — who has returned to City — was Championship player of the year following 29 clean sheets.
Unbelievably, he conceded just 16 goals in his 45 games.
The evening also saw Gareth Southgate and Emma Hayes pick up special PFA merit awards.

DAN Meis received an intriguing prompt 11 years ago. 'I had a young business development guy that said, 'Hey, if I can give you a meeting with Everton will you go to Liverpool?'' the stadium design expert recalled. 'And I said: 'They're not going to hire a Los Angeles architect.' I sort of saw them as like the Cubs of the Premier League, historic and provincial.' Meis, the architect of Seattle's T-Mobile Park, Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field and Los Angeles' Arena, listened to Joshua Boren of his staff and was picked to turn Everton's long-hoped-for stadium into a reality, The Toffees play their first official match in 52,769-capacity Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, their Premier League home opener against Brighton. 'This is going to help us win on the pitch more, because this revenue that we're going to generate, rather than being seen as a cash grab, The Friedkin Group have committed to recycle that straight back,' Everton CEO Angus Kinnear said of the club's new owner. Everton had played at Goodison Park since moving from Anfield for the 1892-93 season and its ground was the site of five matches during the 1966 World Cup, including Pelé's only World Cup defeat. Its capacity of 39,414 ranked 10th in the EPL last season, while Hill Dickinson is seventh, trailing Manchester United, Tottenham, West Ham, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. There are 5,246 premium seats in the €925m stadium, four times the 1,300 at the old venue. It is built on 21.4 acres (8.7 hectares) to Goodison's eight (3.25). Fans have 279 wheelchair positions, 58 accessible toilets, 20 gender-neutral toilets, 95 baby-changing facilities and 19 elevators. A 17,000-capacity fan plaza can host outdoor events, adjacent to the restored Hydraulic Tower and Engine Room dating to 1883, and Everton Way outside the stadium includes 36,000 personalised granite stones with supporters' names, which cost 99 to 750 pounds apiece (currently $134 to $1,012). 'The stadium looks the business. It looks elite,' manager David Moyes said when he returned in January. 'So we need to start getting some elite players.' Everton has nine league titles, the last in 1987, less than half the 20 each of Liverpool and Manchester United, and in 2023 was threatened with relegation until the season's final day. It has long been its city's second-biggest team, Everton's blue outnumbered by Liverpool's red. 'Whilst on a global scale Liverpool is bigger, in the city it feels like an equal split to me,' Kinnear said. Meis' flight for the initial pitch meeting was an hour late and his train delayed another hour before he finally saw then-CEO Robert Elstone, who explained the club's unique history. 'All they care about is sort of this cauldron of energy and the experience,' Meis recalled. Bill Kenwright, Everton's longtime chairman, gave Meis challenging instructions. 'He said: 'I want something that's both historic and contemporary. It has to look to the future,'' Meis recalled. Meis made his first of about 30 trips to the site in 2016 and began sketching ideas, even before the final location selection. Havertz injury blow as Saliba demands step up from Arsenal
Arsenal have been hit by an early-season injury blow with Kai Havertz facing a spell out with a knee injury. The Athletic reports the German international is currently being assessed for the complaint having appeared as a sub in Sunday's win over Manchester United. But fears about the problem are already so pronounced that the club is ready to reenter the transfer market for cover, the Athletic adds.
