MACC seizes six luxury homes worth RM12m, thoroughbred horse in sukuk funds scandal involving ‘Tan Sri'
The Star reported citing a source saying properties, estimated to be worth around RM12 million, were confiscated following a raid conducted by the MACC's investigation division.
'During the raid, the MACC also discovered a thoroughbred horse worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit, believed to have been purchased using sukuk funds,' the MACC said in a statement yesterday.
'As a result, the MACC has summoned the individual involved along with his wife for questioning, but only the woman appeared, as her husband reportedly has health issues."
MACC added that it planned to call between 30 and 50 witnesses to assist with the investigation.
Efforts are ongoing to trace the couple's assets both locally and abroad.
Earlier this week, the MACC seized luxury assets worth RM32 million during raids on two residences belonging to the Tan Sri in the capital.
MACC investigators confiscated nine high-end vehicles including Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, and Range Rover models valued at nearly RM7 million.
The operation also uncovered 217 luxury watches worth RM5 million, 27 designer handbags valued over RM1 million, and jewellery estimated at RM4 million.
A hidden storage area containing luxury alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million was also found, believed to be linked to money laundering activities.
MACC further seized a RM12 million luxury condominium, with all items now being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and AMLA 2001.
The probe, which began on May 9, follows earlier arrests of four individuals accused of submitting false claims worth RM360 million for a highway project between 2016 and 2017, with over RM36 million in assets seized so far.

Two Minnesota teens were killed in a car crash. Their organ donations are helping dozens of people live
Parents in western Minnesota are remembering their kids as kind, generous and an inspiration to others. In July, Brady Heiling of Clara City and his girlfriend Hallie Helgeson of Montevideo, were killed by a wrong-way drunken driver on their way back from a concert in Wisconsin. But the teenagers are continuing to give back, even in death. "He loved life. He loved everything about life from the get go," said Jen Heiling, Brady Heiling's mom. For Brady Heiling, that included football, track, and his girlfriend, Hallie Helgeson. "Brady was her protector. He was the person that probably every parent hopes that their child finds," said Alyson Helgeson, Hallie Helgeson's mom. "Just like Brady, they had hearts of gold." After graduating from MACCRAY High School, Brady Heiling turned down athletic scholarships so he could be closer to Hallie Helgeson during her senior year and attend her sporting events. "He decided, I want to build a life. I want to build a life for me and Hallie," said Jen Heiling. In July, the young couple went to Madison, Wisconsin for a concert but never made it back home. They were hit by a drunken driver going the wrong way on the interstate. Hallie Helgeson was killed instantly. Brady Heiling lived for five days after the crash before he died. "That is absolutely the worst thing any parent can ever wake up to. And when our lives stopped," said Jen Heiling. But through their grief, a silver lining has emerged. Known for giving back, both teenagers had elected to be organ donors. The hospital held an honor walk for Brady Heiling right before he died knowing that in so many ways, he and Hallie Helgeson will live on. "We know his heart went to Ohio. We know one of his corneas went international. Which was a very, very big deal," said Jen Heiling. Hallie Helgeson's organ donations have helped 75 people so far. "Helping other people was part of who she was and so for her to continue on makes me very proud to know that even in her passing, people are benefitting from her," said Alyson Helgeson. Brady Heiling's favorite place was the gym his family built on their farm. He would spend hours there working out. For the Heilings, their son's presence is still everywhere. "I was working on some trucks the other day and I came through the door, and I just lost it. I just started crying. This is everything for him," said Josh Heiling, Brady's dad. MACCRAY is retiring Brady Heiling's #11 football jersey and Montevideo is honoring Hallie Helgeson's as well. Two lives cut short, but their legacy lives on. "And I think that's one of the biggest things, I'm so proud of both of them," said Jen Heiling. "They were just making everyone better. Everyone around them was better because of them." According to Homeland Security, Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila, the 30-year-old driver who crashed into the teenagers, entered the country illegally from Honduras. She has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide and impaired driving.

Kansas City grocery closes despite millions from the city. ‘Beyond our control'
After months of struggling and millions of dollars from the city, the Sun Fresh Linwood has closed. The grocery store on Kansas City's East side — 3110 Wabash Ave. — was locked Tuesday. A black tarp covered its logo, and a sign on its door announced to customers that it would not reopen. 'Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are no longer, at this time, able to serve the residents of this important community,' the printed note reads. 'It has always been our dream and passion to provide quality products and services in a safe, family environment. At this time, unfortunately, we are unable to do that.' Sherae Honeycutt, a spokeswoman for the city, told The Star via email that the city was informed by Community Builders Kansas City it had closed today. She said there is not a new tenant lined up to take the space at the moment. Sun Fresh is the anchor tenant of the Linwood Shopping Center, which the city purchased in 2014 in hopes of offering more food sources for residents on the East side. After the city spent $17 million to acquire and redevelop Sun Fresh, it opened in 2018. The nonprofit CBKC took over the store in 2022. Earlier this year, city council approved an ordinance for the Community Builders to receive $161,000 in rent relief and $750,000 in expedited funding so that Sun Fresh could remain open. The ordinance also authorized the city attorney to pay $450,000 to settle legal claims between the city and Community Builders. Despite city investments, the grocery store struggled to stay afloat. Shoppers and employees alike reported safety concerns, with shoppers reporting frequent 911 calls for fights, drug use and public sex. Teenage grocery shelf stockers were forced to carry tasers. 'My staff is in jeopardy every single day,' CBKC CEO Emmet Pierson Jr. said in a city meeting last year. 'I've been saying this now for a year. For a year.' Sun Fresh lost $1.3 million in 2023. Photos and videos of its bare shelves were widely circulated on the internet in recent months and even in The Washington Post. We are not placing big orders,' Pierson told The Star in April. 'The store is placing orders to fulfill our WIC requirements.' WIC is a federal food assistance program for low-income pregnant women and children under the age of 5.
