Confused American expat's awkward misinterpretation of common Aussie phrase leaves hundreds in hysterics: 'I had no idea this was a local thing'

Daily Mail7 hours ago
'First in, best dressed' is a commonly used expression in Australia - but it recently left one American expat totally stumped.
US traveller Maura Sheahan recently shared a TikTok video recounting one of the hilarious culture shocks she'd experienced since moving to Australia where she grossly misunderstood the colloquial saying.
The expression is used often by Australians and simply means, in a dining context, that walk-in guests will be accepted into a venue based on the order they arrive.
In a two minute video, the young woman recalled how she was organising a celebratory birthday drinks and dinner and wanted to make a reservation for a patio table at a certain restaurant.
'So I call up the restaurant trying to make this reservation,' she recounted.
Maura said the restaurant staffer informed her that they unfortunately don't take bookings.
Instead, she was told: 'We don't actually do reservations - we just do first in, best dressed.'
She promptly hung up the phone and pondered over what she'd just been told.
'I'm like, what do you mean first in, best dressed?' Maura said.
'Like, am I going to show up in there and [the restaurant staff will] be like, "Oh, that is an ugly outfit. You're in the back by the kitchen. Send this girl to sit by the trash cans where no one else can see her." That's what I'm thinking.'
Maura consequently decided that even though it was a 'weird rule', she remained determined to secure a patio table.
Accordingly, she and her friends would 'dress really cute' in anticipation of the moment when restaurant staff would be 'judging our outfits' and determining where they would be seated.
A few days later, Maura said she started a new job and decided to break the ice by telling her co-workers about her upcoming restaurant plans.
Maura recalled telling her colleagues about the restaurant, saying: 'It looks cute, but pretty weird, because where you get to sit is actually based on what you're wearing.'
'[My boss] was like, "What I've never heard of this in my life. That's insane".'
Maura then proceeded to explain to her new employer: 'I called to make a reservation. They don't even do reservations. They just do "first in, and best dressed".'
'The entire office goes silent. Everybody's like, "Maura, no. That just means first come, first served",' a horrified Maura recalled.
'I thought that they were going to make me do an "outfit of the day",' she sheepishly laughed at the conclusion of the video.
The TikTok video quickly drew over 280,000 views and hundreds of comments – many laughing at the hilarious misinterpretation of the common expression.
But many Aussies replied saying they were stunned to hear that 'first in, best dressed' was a uniquely Australian turn of phrase.
'I never knew that saying was only heard in Australia,' read the most liked comment, which had received over 2200 likes.
Another Australian added that they 'genuinely thought this was a common saying'.
One Aussie even conceded that Maura's response made sense if you'd never heard the saying before. '[W]hen you think about the expression you made a very logical conclusion,' they wrote.
Officially, according to an online dictionary, the Australian saying means 'people will be dealt with in the order they arrive'.
Another noted that it was a derivative of the old English saying 'First up, best dressed', which was coined in reference to children from large families who would share clothes - meaning the first child awake would have first pick from the wardrobe.
Others likened it to another common saying in 'the early bird catches the worm'.
The comments section of the video confirmed that the definition of the saying is: 'If you're first, you get the best choice'.
Many commenters noted that Maura's colleagues would have probably had a good chuckle at her story.
'"Office went silent"...I'm sure a few sly grins happened,' read one reply.
'Can't believe nobody thought to run with it and tell her she needs to be in fancy dress or something,' added another.
Others chimed in with their own mishaps involving the same expression.
'Had [a] similar experience, I spent days looking for the best outfit,' read one reply.
An Australian teacher wrote that they had made the 'mistake' of telling their international students "first in, best dressed" before taking them out on an excursion.
'To their credit, everyone looked great on the excursion,' the teacher added.
Some people even jokingly responded that that it would be 'a fun restaurant theme'.
'Wait, actually that would be kinda cool though,' read one reply.

Controversial Married At First Sight Australia star shares worrying hospital photo from his bed

A DIVISIVE Married At First Sight groom has shared a worrying photograph from his hospital bed. The E4 star, who appeared on the Australian version of the matchmaking series, was seen lying back with a drip attached to his left arm. 6 6 6 Harrison Boon struck a serious expression in his selfie, which saw him clad in a white medical gown. Yet the controversial MAFS alum - who faced allegations of bullying and was at the centre of a series of spats during his time on the show - attempted to make light of his mystery condition in the caption. He wrote: "Turns out there's no cure for narcissicsm. "Sorry guys." His medical condition is currently unclear. announced his engagement to girlfriend Gina Ha, who he has been dating for just over a year. MAFS CHAOS It was an unhappier time for Harrison on the reality TV series. He was swiftly hailed a show villain for allegedly gaslighting his wife. Harrison first caused a stir when he upset bride Bronte on their wedding day. One of her bridesmaids told her that Harrison had been dating a girl in the lead up to the wedding, and wanted to be with her when he finished the show. MAFS Australia star reveals she's back with her ex While Bronte gave him the benefit of the doubt, she later slept with him on honeymoon, only for him to remark that there was "no chemistry" between them. Later in the series, Harrison was accused of 'bullying' for the way he spoke about the other couples during the commitment ceremonies. When Evelyn challenged him, they exchanged a war of words, prompting Melinda to jump in with: "You're just a rude guy! It's bullying. It's attacking everyone here.' Mafs couples that have stood the test of time Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby. The pair couldn't keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam's Doncaster home. Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau. Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December. Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: 'I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out - and excited for everything to come.' Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019. Owen recalled: 'I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work. "While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in. 'The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, 'Wouldn't it be funny if I signed up?' 'A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.' Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson. Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna's vegan lifestyle, the show's first same sex pairing are still going strong. They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod. Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: "We're not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship." But Harrison was having none of it, firing back: "'It's not bullying. Don't play the sex card, grow up!". Needless to say, he and Bronte didn't go the distance and split before final vows. 'Harrison, we're done, we're over and I honestly never want to see you again," Bronte shouted at him when they split during the final dinner party. After the series aired, Harrison hit out amid the fan backlash. He said: "The network hid 90 per cent of Bronte's behaviour, so imagine how bad she must have been what they didn't show, in order for her to look equally as bad as me, when I'm just reacting to it." 6 6 6

Noel Gallagher's daughter hits back as Oasis fans inundate her with same request

Anais Gallagher has responded to Oasis fans who have been contacting her asking for help with similar issues they have come up against as Noel and Liam Gallagher's reunion tour continues Noel Gallagher's daughter has hit out at fans of Oasis after claiming she's been inundated with similar requests in her private messages. As fans took to social media in droves to ask Anais Gallagher - who Noel shares with his first wife, Meg Matthews - for help with their tickets, the 25-year-old took to TikTok to tell followers she "isn't f***ing Ticketmaster" after her frustrations boiled over. After admitting her voice was croaky having attended the first four Oasis comeback shows in Cardiff and Manchester, Anais said "it's not just the boomers" who are the problem. "What is it about some Oasis fans?" she asked. "DM-ing me like I am f***ing Ticketmaster or Shopify or something." ‌ The Oasis Live 25 tour sold out in a matter of minutes in August last year, but that hasn't stopped fans of the reunited Gallagher brothers hoping to get their hands on tickets to see their heroes throughout the remainder of 2025. ‌ Anais elaborated: "People are messaging me like, 'I'm having trouble transferring my ticket to somebody - this is my Ticketmaster code'. What the f*** do I know about Ticketmaster?" The model and influencer went on to slam others that have sent her queries about Oasis t-shirts selling out in particular sizes and where they can find alternative stockists. "How I meant to know what shops are stocking your size?" Anais continued. ‌ "I don't know, I wish I could help you but I am kind of baffled that when people have an issue they think, 'Do you know what, let me DM Anais, she's going to know how I can transfer my ticket'. Guys... I can't!" WARNING: The video below contains explicit language. Viewer discretion is advised. ‌ Writing in response, one TikTok user couldn't help but joke: "Love how they've soft launched you as head of Oasis customer services." Another poked fun at Anais' rant: "What gate am I entering for the Wembley gig? Also what's the train schedule?" A third added: "That's too funny. They just wanna be able to tell their mates 'Noel's daughter helped set up my tickets for me' hahah." However, Anais dismissed this, replying: "I don't think it's that. I think they just genuinely believe I understand Ticketmaster code." Meanwhile a fourth person commented: "Honestly every time I've seen your comments recently it's just people begging for tickets in one way or another." It comes as Oasis ticket stubs from years gone by have seemingly become collectors' items, meanwhile. Indeed, Seat Pick notes that an actual ticket from Oasis' performance at Oxford Brookes University Student Union in March 1994 recently fetched nearly £400 on eBay. Elsewhere, someone is currently asking for £699.99 for a paper ticket from a 1993 gig at Krazy House Liverpool. With delivery, the total comes to £709.94. A bidding war is stirring as 16 potential buyers have expressed interest.

Vanessa, 37, was showing off her baby bump in a sheer black dress with long sleeves that had exaggerated, textured bell sleeves. The heavily pregnant Crown actress added a crop top under her see-through gown, which also featured solid black skirting. She completed the look with see-through black high heels, as well as adding a number of chunky ring and earrings for accessories. Vanessa chose a clean and peachy make-up look with a pale coral lipstick and slicked her blonde hair off her face into a low ponytail. Joseph, 31, who rose to international fame playing Eddie Munson in Stranger Things, was on trend in a navy blue ensemble. The British actor wore a royal blue satin shirt underneath his well-fitted suit, to which he added patent dress shoes. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays The Thing in the upcoming film, opted for slate tones for his suit. The American actor, 48, added a dark shirt under his fashionable blazer, and was seen giggling with his co-stars as they posed on the blue carpet at the event. The film marks the latest reboot of Marvel's iconic superhero team and is one of the studio's most anticipated releases in years. In February, Marvel fans were delighted to see the first-look trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. They took to social media to give their opinions on the latest installment of the superhero franchise, with one person writing on X: 'Okay the Fantastic Four trailer wasn't bad. I'm pleasantly surprised.' Another added: 'I'm not even a Fantastic Four fan, but this looks really sleek. It's nailing the period setting in the same way that First Avenger did.' Someone else weighed in: 'Watched the Fantastic Four trailer and I actually excited for a Marvel movie again.' And another social media user described the Fantastic Four comic series as 'the only ones I've been able to stomach,' adding, 'The trailer looks so great. I need this.' 'I've felt a little burnt out on superheroes but f4 are my ride or die,' one fan revealed. 'I'm so happy the movie looks good.' Others praised the teaser for its 'nostalgic' feel and looking 'very cinematic.' Meanwhile, Pedro recently responded to critics who say he 's 'too old' to have been cast in the newest Fantastic Four film. The actor discussed the subject with AP News, revealing that the online comments have taken a toll on him. Pascal explained that while he typically ignores negative comments relating to his work, being hurt by backlash sometimes 'comes with the territory.' 'I think that sometimes the outside will find you, no matter how much you try to protect yourself from it, and it just comes with the territory,' the A-lister reasoned. 'I think maybe my nerves were bigger than they usually are, and so I think I just was a little bit more sensitive to the love that people have for stories like this, because I know that they wouldn't exist if it weren't for the love that people have for these characters,' he explained on the red carpet of a Fantastic Four fan event in London. He added that he felt pressure to 'fulfill expectations' as he portrayed Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic. Pedro said, 'I think that it's very important for me that expectations be fulfilled. 'But I also know that the only way to do that is to give it all my focus and all my heart and my body and my soul, and so that was the best I could do.' Also turning heads at the premiere were several Aussie stars who mingled with the A-listers present. Model Erin Holland made sure to command attention in a very unusual outfit that included an oversized blazer dress in a red satin and matching metallic heels. Neighbours actress April Rose Pengilly was all white on the night in a wide-cut textured cropped jacket and mini skirt set paired with metallic oil slick boots. Influencer Suzan Mutesi brought the drama as always, putting on a show as she flared her tulle-adorned, baby blue, sequinned mini dress for the cameras. Actress Jessica Ferguson braved Sydney's chilly winter winds as she dared to bare in a lace bra top under a light jacket, adding flared trousers and strappy heels to her all-black look. The Wiggles star Lucia Field looked classy in a powder blue, shimmering maxi dress matched with silver heels.
