What to know about the victims of the New York City skyscraper shooting
New York police department (NYPD) officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was assigned to a Bronx precinct and had been on the job for three and a half years, was off duty when the attack began.
The immigrant from Bangladesh was also a father of two children – with a third on the way – when he died 'protecting New Yorkers', the city's mayor, Eric Adams, said.
'He was doing what he does best and all members of the police department carry out,' Adams said during a late Monday press conference. 'He was saving lives.'
Police commissioner Jessica Tisch also praised Islam's bravery, saying: 'He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city.
'He was a hero.'
The NYPD also released a statement saying Islam 'represented the very best of our department'. The statement said Islam's death produced resulted in 'incomprehensible pain' and pledged to 'forever honor his legacy'.
Meanwhile, Monday's shooting also killed Wesley LePatner, a high-ranking Blackstone executive. LePatner led the firm's Core+ real estate division. And she was chief executive officer of the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT).
She joined Blackstone in 2014 after more than 10 years at Goldman Sachs.
'We are heartbroken,' Blackstone said about LePatner in a statement to multiple news outlets. 'Words cannot express the devastation we feel.'
Blackstone's statement said LePatner would 'be sorely missed', having been 'brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within [the] firm and beyond'.
'She embodied the best of Blackstone,' the statement continued.
LePatner, a Yale graduate and trustee of the Met Museum in New York, was an executive at Goldman Sachs before joining Blackstone in 2014. She spoke to Business Insider in 2022 about her work at Blackstone.
'Core+ was, for all intents and purposes, a startup.' LePatner said to the outlet at the time. 'I faced all the challenges one could imagine when building a multibillion-dollar business – from hiring to ensuring standards remain high, moving quickly to keep up with growth, and staying ahead of market swings and growing pains.'
The identities of the other two slain victims were not immediately released. Another person was gravely injured and remains hospitalized.
Monday's shooting occurred at about 6.30pm inside 345 Park Avenue, a commercial tower that houses, among others, the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL). Police said the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, carried out the attack alone and died from a self-inflicted gunshot on the building's 33rd floor.
The NFL's offices are lower than the one where the gunman died.
The league later confirmed that one of its employees was among the wounded.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent a statement out to staff saying the wounded league employee was 'in stable condition' at the hospital.
'NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family,' Goodell wrote in the memo, which was obtained by ESPN.
Goodell also said that there would be 'increased security presence' at offices 'in the days and weeks to come'. He said staff based in New York should work remotely on Tuesday or would be given the option to take the day off.
Mayor Adams said Tuesday morning that the shooter was likely trying to target the headquarters of the NFL but accidentally took the wrong elevator.
A note found at the scene in the wallet of the shooter – who played high school football – made claims that he suffered from CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, often seen in athletes such as football players and boxers.
One page of the note reportedly found in the shooter's pocket accused the NFL of concealing the true scope of danger posed to football players' brains to maximize profits, sources told ABC News.
Another page mentioned CTE and blamed the sport. A third page reportedly said, 'Study my brain please. I'm sorry.'

Ms Lachgar is co-founder of the Alternative Movement for Individual Freedoms and has repeatedly been arrested during protests. In Morocco, she is known for organising events such as a 2013 'kiss-in', in support of three teenagers arrested for posting pictures on Facebook of two of them kissing. A boy and girl, aged 15 and 14, alongside their 15-year-old male friend, had been charged with 'violating public decency' and held in a juvenile centre after posting the photo outside their school in the northern town of Nador. At the demonstration against creeping conservatism in Moroccan society, activists kissed outside the parliament building in the capital city.

A feminist activist in Morocco was taken into custody and said she was threatened online with stoning after posting a photo of herself wearing a T-shirt with the words: 'Allah is a lesbian.' Ibtissame Lachgar is accused of posting a photo wearing a shirt that is offensive to Islam, and writing a caption that was also insulting to the religion. The Public Prosecutor's Office at the Rabat Court of First Instance in Morocco announced she was taken into police custody on Sunday, as authorities investigate the photo. 'Following a woman's posting of a photo on her social media account, which depicts her wearing a shirt with phrases offensive to the divine, along with a caption insulting Islam, the public prosecutor ordered an investigation,' its statement said. 'Due to its urgency, the subject has been placed under police custody in accordance with the law.' In the photo, the outspoken feminist activist can be seen smiling with her hands on her hips as she poses wearing the T-shirt. She wrote on X: 'In Morocco, I walk around with T-shirts bearing messages against religions, Islam, etc. 'You tire us with your sanctimoniousness, your accusations. Lachgar is a developmental psychologist as well as a feminist and atheist activist who has organised a number of protests in Morocco about women's rights, LGBTQ+ issues and male violence. She co-founded the Mouvement alternatif pour les libertés individuelles (MALI), which campaigns for individual freedoms such as the right for abortion and same-sex marriage. Her post sparked outrage online, as well as debate, with some accounts showing support for the feminist. Lachgar's post sparked outrage online, with many calling for her to be punished by the authorities 'The authorities have still not apprehended her, and this is unacceptable. We must not let such an act go unpunished. There is nothing more sacred to Moroccans than Allah, than Islam. This woman's place is behind bars.' A 2002 Moroccan law restricting media freedom states that expression deemed critical of 'Islam, the institution of the monarchy, or territorial integrity' is not permissible and may be punishable by imprisonment. The NYPD have launched a search for a man believed to be behind one of the lurid sex toy-throwing incidents that continues to plague the WNBA. Beginning last week, a series of shocking moments at women's basketball games across the league saw green sex toys being thrown onto the court. Now, officials have confirmed that they are seeking out a man - who was pictured wearing a 'Beavis and Butthead' t-shirt - who is believed to have taken part in the disturbing trend. According to Crime Stoppers, the man was seen throwing a green sex toy from the stands, during a New York Liberty game on Tuesday, which struck a 12-year-old girl. According to the New York Post, one fan said: 'The object was thrown from someone much higher up but definitely in the same section. 'When it landed, the girl started screaming/freaking out (understandably) for like 30 [seconds] and got the attention of most people within the surrounding rows'. Security footage from the Barclays Center showed the man - who has tattoos up and down his arms - wearing a red and black hat as he walked through the arena. Unlike in other incidents that have plagued the league, the sex toy did not make it onto the court and officials were reportedly able to dispose of the item swiftly. The incident was one of two sex toy-throwing acts that occurred on Tuesday night, with the Indiana Fever's game against the Los Angeles Sparks also interrupted. Fever star Sophie Cunningham - who had previously spoken out against the trend - was struck by the item after it was hurled on court from the stands. Meanwhile, two individuals - including an 18-year-old - have been arrested over the indecent acts in the last week. Kaden Lopez, 18, was booked into jail on suspicion of disorderly conduct, assault and public display of explicit sexual material following the game between the Mercury and Sun, Fox 10 Phoenix has reported. While the toy did not reach the court, it allegedly hit an adult male victim who was attending the game with his nine-year-old niece, according to a court document. Days prior to that, Delbert Carver, 23, was arrested for allegedly throwing sex toys onto the floor of two WNBA games last week He was released from Clayton County Jail in Jonesboro on Sunday, one day after being charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass, according to online records. Police say he was arrested after throwing a sex toy onto the court during the Atlanta Dream's win over the visiting Phoenix Mercury on Friday. He also allegedly confessed to police that he was involved in a similar incident in Atlanta's July 29 loss to the visiting Golden State Valkyries. Carver's next court date has not been announced and he has no listed attorney on the Clayton County government website. Meanwhile, a group of cryptocurrency traders have claimed responsibility for the wave of sexual pranks plaguing WNBA games. What's more, they say they're doing it to promote their new meme coin. A spokesman for the cryptocurrency enthusiasts, told USA Today the group is responsible for the pranks and currently has more planned for the future. Furthermore, @Daldo_Rain said they've launched their own cryptocurrency, Green Dildo Coin (DILDO), which is a nod to the sex toys that have been thrown at WNBA players in the last two weeks. USA Today obtained text messages showing the group's coordinating efforts before the coin's July 28 launch. The first sex toy was thrown onto the court during an Atlanta Dream-Golden State Valkyries game the following day.
