Primary school teacher who turned up drunk to assembly suspended

Telegraph25-03-2025

A primary school teacher who turned up drunk to a school assembly has been suspended.
Ashley Atkin, 38, had drunk more than a bottle of wine and arrived at work smelling 'pungently' of alcohol.
The year one teacher was 'unsteady' on her feet and looked 'dazed' as she led her pupils into an assembly, it was heard. Her behaviour worried colleagues who reported their concerns before she was eventually driven home.
She has now been found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct and conduct that may bring the profession into disrepute by a Teaching Regulation Authority (TRA) professional conduct panel. She has been banned indefinitely from classrooms in England and Wales.
Ms Atkin was a teacher at Horn's Mill Primary School, Cheshire, in September 2023.
In October, a colleague noticed that Ms Atkin smelt of alcohol when she went into her classroom before the start of the day.
Moved 'slowly and gingerly'
She was said to be 'unsteady' on her feet and moved 'slowly and gingerly' when taking the children to assembly.
Ms Atkin then walked off to sit down on a chair away from her class as she 'looked dazed and was staggering'.
When it was time to present the school's weekly 'Big Cheese', she leant forward and asked a colleague: 'Who is big cheese?' before handing them the certificate and saying,'you do it'.
She was later taken into a meeting with bosses, where there was a 'pungent' smell of alcohol on her that was 'distinctive to drinking'.
In her disciplinary investigation interview the following month, Ms Atkin admitted that she drank a bottle of white wine and another small glass of wine the evening before.
She resigned from her role before the investigation was concluded.
Despite initially claiming that she thought she was 'fit to teach' in the investigation meeting, in correspondence with the TRA last month, she said: 'I'm absolutely devastated about what happened and it's all I can think about.'
She added that she was now in a 'much better place'.
Guilty of unacceptable professional conduct
Melissa West, who chaired the panel, said: 'The panel was satisfied that the conduct of Ms Atkin fell significantly short of the standard of behaviour expected of a teacher in that she presented at work after consuming alcohol and smelling of alcohol and for safeguarding reasons could not be left in charge of her class for the day.
'The panel was satisfied that Ms Atkin was guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.'
She continued: 'Ms Atkin was teaching on Oct 20 2023; she went to work, on her evidence, having drunk a bottle and a glass of wine during the early hours of the morning.
'She was seen to be staggering, her eyes were glazed, and she appeared drunk.
'Ms Atkin was unprepared to start the school day and unable to lead her class in the assembly to be seated.'
The hearing was told that she had admitted drink driving at Cheshire magistrates' court just months previously in July 2023 and had been fined and banned from driving for 18 months as a result.
The panel heard that she had been over twice the legal limit for alcohol and was stopped by police as her driving was 'poor' and 'very hesitant' when turning a corner.
'Not an isolated incident'
Mrs West said this showed that the proven allegations were 'not isolated incidents, and both incidents in June and October 2023 involved alcohol'.
Marc Cavey, a civil servant who signed off on the ban on behalf of Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, said: 'The lack of evidence that Ms Atkin has developed full insight into and remorse for her actions means that there is some risk of the repetition of this behaviour and this jeopardises the future wellbeing of pupils.'
Ms Atkin cannot reapply to the profession for two years and has 28 days to appeal the ruling.

'Sexually-motivated' teacher told school pupil 'you're mine little duck'

Charlotte Doman, 35, worked as a history teacher at William Edwards School in Essex when she started to contact a pupil outside of school on social media and sent "inappropriate messages", according to a teaching panel A "sexually motivated" teacher who confessed her love to a pupil and told them "you're mine, little duck" has been banned from teaching. Charlotte Doman, 35, worked as a history teacher at William Edwards School in Essex when she started to contact the boy - referred to as Pupil A - outside of school on social media and sent "inappropriate messages", according to a Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel. Ms Doman, then 32, sent dozens of messages to Pupil A between April and May 2023. In one, she said: "You're not even legal or an adult or anything. Like, am I taking advantage of you? Some days it feels like you're taking advantage of me lol." She provided her mobile number to the pupil and told him she loved him on Instagram, writing: "YOU have all the control in this relationship" and also said: "Love that you're still ignoring me. I'm gonna go get f***** up". Ms Doman also told Pupil A details about her sexual relationships, the panel found, saying in an Instagram message: "One night I ended up with three different guys". The 34-year-old woman admitted she encouraged Pupil A to drink alcohol and smoke cannabis with her, and said in a statement: "I am unsure why any of this occurred. I certainly don't behave like this myself. I drink alcohol less than once a month and never to excess, and I've never taken drugs." The teacher also sent photographs of herself, including her tattoos. Ms Domain admitted to calling the pupil her "little duck", writing: "You're mine, little duck." She later recognised this was "inappropriate. " The former teacher even confessed her "love" to the student and told them to "get use to it". She wrote: 'I'm going to keep telling you I love you even though you don't like it because you need to know people love you. I don't care if you never love me or say it because love isn't meant to be selfish. It's not how it works. So get used to it.' The teaching panel concluded "the findings of misconduct are serious as they include a teacher engaging in sexually motivated and inappropriate communications with a pupil." The report read: "The panel recognised that there was no prompting or encouragement by Pupil A for Miss Doman to disclose details in respect of her sexual experiences or relationship. The panel did not see any other reason as to why Miss Doman discussed her past sexual experiences, problems in her relationship and a graphic sexual extract from a book other than if it were in pursuit of sexual gratification or in pursuit of a future sexual relationship. The panel therefore determined that Miss Doman's conduct was sexually motivated". A parent of a pupil raised concerns with the school on May 24, 2023, in response to her alleged conduct at the time, prompting them to make a referral to the Local Authority Designated Officer on the same day. After the school commenced an investigation, Ms Doman was suspended from her duties and resigned from her position at the school on June 20, 2023. Simon Bell, Headteacher of William Edwards School, said they were "appalled" by the actions of the former staff member. He confirmed the school took "robust" actions to address the incident. Mr Bell told The Mirror: 'We are appalled and deeply disappointed by the actions of this former staff member, who was immediately suspended and went through a disciplinary process which resulted in her leaving our employment shortly afterwards'. 'The safeguarding of our students is always our top priority, and we took immediate action when concerns were raised, including referrals to a number of external agencies including the Local Authority Safeguarding Team, Essex Police, the Disclosure and Barring Service and the Teacher Regulation Agency.' 'We are reassured that our robust safeguarding processes allowed us to act swiftly to address the concerns and welcome the Teacher Regulation Agency's decision to ban them from teaching in the future.' In a written conclusion published on Wednesday, Marc Cavey, on behalf of the Secretary of State, decided Ms Doman should be banned from teaching indefinitely, subject to a five-year review period.

More info Two people have been shot at a popular Irish bar within a Spanish holiday resort. A masked man is said to have entered Monaghans Fuengirola in Costa del Sol and killed his victims in front of horrified tourists and expats enjoying a drink after the end of the Champions League final before fleeing in a getaway vehicle, reports The Record. Reports have been made of two gunmen, although this information is yet to be confirmed by police. The nationalities of the two people killed has not yet been made public, although local media are saying neither is Spanish. A spokesman for the National Police in Malaga, in the force's first official comment on the incident, said this morning: 'Around midnight an incident with firearms occurred in Fuengirola, specifically at an entertainment venue along the seafront. 'Two males died as a result from gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made so far.' Officers did not respond to queries about the nationalities of the victims or offer any extra information about them. It's understood the shootings are related to the ongoing gang wars erupting in Scotland. Pictures from the scene at around 11.30pm show a man lying on his back in shorts and a T-shirt by a drinks and meal blackboard on an outside terrace at the Irish bar. In other disturbing images police and paramedics can be seen surrounding the body of one of the victims, thought to be the same man, after he was covered under a blanket as shocked locals and holidaymakers looked on. There are no reports yet of any arrests, although police set up roadblocks in the area after the shooting to try to catch those responsible. The killings come amid a violent gang war that has been raging in Scotland since March. The feud first erupted following a fallout between rival gangsters after a £500k stash of cocaine was reportedly swiped from under the nose of Dubai-based Mr Big, Ross McGill. The drugs were reportedly taken by caged Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson's foot soldiers sparking a series of violent attacks on homes and businesses. Mr Big, who was later revealed as former Union Bears capo McGill waged war on Richardson and his associates, including the Daniels crime clan in Glasgow. Mr Big's enforcers, a faceless and frightening group going by the name of Tamo Junto (TMJ), have carried out a series of fire bombings and other vicious attacks on homes, businesses and cars associated with Richardson. We reported earlier this week a well-placed source said the Dubai-based Mr Big behind attacks on Daniel targets, Ross McGill, had agreed to end hostilities after being leaned on by cartel bosses in Dubai.
