NRL set to ignore pleas from New South Wales fans and make controversial State of Origin III decision

Daily Mail22-06-2025
The NRL are set to ignore pleas from fans and allow referee Ashley Klein to take charge of State of Origin III.
Klein left New South Wales boss Laurie Daly 'privately furious' after he dished out eight straight penalties to the Blues in the first half.
The Maroons took full advantage of that, taking a 26-6 lead in the match and would weather a late comeback from the Blues to seal the 26-24 victory.
However, New South Wales have been looking for answers and plans to meet with the league this week to understand why those eight penalties were given, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Klein, though, will still take charge of the match over rivals Grant Atkins and Adam Gee.
The outlet adds that referees are ranked by a key performance indicator system. Metrics in that system include play-the-ball speed, decision-making and communication.
However, the spotlight will be on the referee during game three after his performance last Wednesday.
Journalist Phil Rothfield revealed on Thursday that while NSW boss Laurie Daley did not comment on the massive penalty count, the Blues were filthy at some of Klein's officiating.
'Laurie will look at the video and find out what he wants to talk to the NRL about and then take it to adjudication,' Rothfield said on NRL 360.
'He was furious after the game. Privately furious, but he knows he can't come out and say anything. Not just for the fine, but because it'll look like poor sportsmanship.'
Furious NSW fans have also commented on the officiating, with some claiming the referee's decisions robbed them of the victory.
'Ashley Klein needs to pull his head in. You cannot tell me he hasn't been instructed to favour Queensland,' posted one on X.
Another wrote: 'I know the NRL want a decider, but Klein can't even hide the bias. 8-0 penalty count and all the six-again calls. You may as well skipped game 2 and just gone to game 3.'

Footy star reveals what inspired him to play a match despite losing his mum two days before the game - and then learning his uncle died just hours before kick-off

Tyrone Munro has credited his late mother for instilling the 'undying passion' for rugby league that has guided him through a year of personal tragedy and professional setbacks. It was almost a year ago that Munro won the hearts of the NRL by playing for South Sydney during a week of devastation off the field. Only 19 at the time, the winger bravely put his hand up to play against NRL powerhouse Penrith just two days after losing his mother Kirawhan Fernando - and on the same day, he lost his uncle Raymond Caldwell. After the twin tragedies, Munro looked set to finally become a regular first-grader at Souths in 2025 following a wretched run of injuries. But in round one he fractured his collarbone for a third time in little more than a year. As a result, the footy player has gone on to feature in only 10 of a possible 22 games since. Through it all, it has been the wisdom of Munro's late mother that has kept him going. 'At the end of the day, whatever's happening to my life, that's on me. It's not on anyone else. I don't sit around and wait for people to message me and see how I'm feeling,' he said. 'Regardless of how I'm feeling, I'm going to get up and I'm going to do what I'm going to do. 'I proved that last year when I went through that tragic time, because I love this sport, I've got a passion for it. It's an undying passion. 'My mum probably instilled that in me.' It was Munro's mother who had encouraged him on the first steps of his professional rugby league journey, which began with a first-grade debut at only 18 in 2023. He still carries her words with him today. 'She told me to chase your dreams and make sure you do everything to protect those dreams. The sky's the limit,' Munro said. The 20-year-old reiterated the extent of his potential in the Rabbitohs' 20-16 victory against Parramatta last Saturday night. Munro scored the first try in the gutsy win, and defensively dominated his much more seasoned opposite - and cousin - Josh Addo-Carr. Squaring off with a fellow Indigenous flyer was a fitting way for Gomeroi man Munro to celebrate the first Indigenous Round clash of his young career. 'It's probably something I'm going to remember for the rest of my life,' he said. 'It was pretty emotional for me, I've got a lot of love and respect for 'Foxx' (Addo-Carr). 'He took me under his wing when I was coming through the reps and stuff, when I was coming through (junior grades) Harold Matts and SG Ball.' The curtain is beginning to come down on an injury-ravaged season for Souths, who mercifully appear to have dodged the wooden spoon. Munro, who has played 17 NRL games, hopes 2026 can finally be the year he plays a full season as a starting winger for the club he loves. 'That's the goal,' he said. 'But I've just got to execute it when I get an opportunity.

Footy great turned radio star Corey Oates shocks listeners by revealing a VERY surprising detail about his sex life live on air

Former Brisbane star Corey Oates has blindsided fans of his radio show by revealing the surprising amount of time he and his wife waited to have sex after meeting each other. The 30-year-old ex-Broncos player turned radio star was discussing the topic with his KIIS 97.3 breakfast hosts, Robin and Kip, on Tuesday morning. Oates said he and his wife Tegan waited about a year to have sex after their first meeting. 'Because when we first met, it was a long time from when we first met to actually getting together,' Oates said. 'Honestly, it was like 11 years ago. I've had a lot of head knocks, alright. You're really trying to make me think now. That's still hard for me!' When he asked how long they waited after the first official date, Oates replied: 'Months, yeah. Five or six. I actually couldn't put a number on how many dates it was, to be honest.' Oates says he was to blame in the early days for the relationship not progressing smoothly. 'I always used to just disappear … Because I'm a horrible replier … I just get sick of texting,' he said. 'She pretty much used to like me then hate me because I would just disappear because that was just the way I was!' Oates revealed he had one other big reason for not pushing things. 'I was scared!' he said. 'If your father-in-law is one of the greatest enforcers for the State of Origin team, as in Gene Miles … you've got to be respectful of Gene Miles' daughter.' In 2024, Oates surprised footy fans by giving radio interview where he answered a question about which Broncos player had the largest manhood. He did an interview with KIIS 97.3 where a caller phoned in to ask which of his teammates was 'packing the most heat'. Oates laughed at the question and admitted that he didn't know for sure because not all the players stripped completely nude like he does in the changerooms. 'I walk around starkers,' he laughed. 'I scare the hell out of them all.' But after a few moments to think about it, he nominated teammate Jordan Riki. Some listeners were put off by the segment, but Riki didn't mind one bit. 'I'm truly thankful for big Oatsy, I owe him a few beers,' Riki said. 'It helps me out maybe finding a wife.'
