WTC Final: Sanjay Bangar delivers blunt message in warning to Australia and South Africa

Former India coach
Sanjay Bangar
has cautioned that South Africa and Australia cannot rely on their past performances at Lord's Cricket Ground ahead of the World Test Championship final on Wednesday, emphasizing that winning will require playing their best cricket regardless of historical success at the venue of the finale.
South Africa's record at Lord's since 1991 shows five wins, one loss, and one draw. Australia has secured 18 victories in 40 matches at the historic venue. Despite the impressive numbers, Bangar believes neither team will have an advantage over the other in the upcoming championship match.
"I don't go by statistics and what has happened in the past. The thing is that there are multiple players, and a generation of players has now changed.
There were the likes of Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis at one time. But now there is a new generation of South African cricketers. For them, it could be a part of the folklore, but if they have to win, they have to play good cricket. In sports, past history and records don't mean anything," JioStar expert Sanjay Bangar told ANI in a media conference on the eve of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025.

"If you can go out and try to play your best cricket, ensure that most of your players perform on the given day. If the majority of your players are performing, then you place yourself in the best possible chance to win on that particular day. Both these teams, despite the very strong legacy that they have at this particular venue, they still can't take anything for granted and have to play their best cricket on the day," he added.

Bangar's comments highlight the importance of current performance over historical achievements, noting that team composition has evolved significantly over the years, particularly for the Proteas.

WTC Final: South Africa Opt To Bowl First Against Australia Under Overcast Sky

Last Updated: Australia captain Pat Cummins has no qualms batting first in the ICC World Test Championship final. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bowl first against Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord's on Wednesday. The overcast conditions in London were expected to favour South Africa's fast bowlers, with reigning champions Australia also fielding a formidable pace attack. Australia's Marnus Labuschagne is set to open for the first time in his Test career, immediately stepping into the action. 'We'll have a bowl first," Bavuma said at the toss. 'The surface looks good, with solid overhead conditions. I'm happy. It's too late now for any changes. We've selected the best team for these conditions. It's a massive occasion. I think all of us have some sort of allegiance to Lord's. It should be a spectacular game." Australia captain Pat Cummins expressed contentment with batting first. 'There are a few clouds, but that's not unusual for England," he said. 'It's dry and might turn later in the match. I don't think there's any extra pressure as defending champions. We've been here before and won it. This week is about enjoying it." Both teams announced their line-ups on Tuesday. Allrounder Beau Webster retains his position at number six in the Australian team, with the experienced Josh Hazlewood preferred over Scott Boland in the pace attack. South Africa named allrounder Wiaan Mulder at number three and selected Lungi Ngidi over Dane Paterson, despite Paterson's familiarity with Lord's conditions from playing for Middlesex this season. South Africa aims to win their first major trophy since lifting the ICC Knockout, the predecessor to the Champions Trophy, in 1998. The top-ranked Australians, who defeated India in the 2023 WTC final, have multiple white-ball trophies to their name. With AFP Inputs First Published:

Australia vs South Africa Live Score, ICC WTC Final 2025: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first against Australia today. It's time. History will be made at the Lord's Cricket Ground with Australia and South Africa set to fight for the ICC World Test Championship from today. South Africa are a first-time finalist in this tournament and are eyeing to break their ICC title drought having last won a major trophy in 1998. Since then, it has been a story of heartbreaks for the South Africans and they would want to end the wait at the historic venue under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma. On the other hand, Australia are playing in their second straight WTC final and are the defending champions too. Unlike their latest opponents, the Aussies are used to winning ICC titles and are well aware of what they need to do to get the job done. Will Pat Cummins-led side become the first team in WTC history to retain the title?
