Marnus Labuschagne "Would Be Happy" On Opening Batting For Australia In Tests
Australia batter, Marnus Labuschagne, has been out of the Aussie Test lineup since the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 against South Africa, according to the ICC website. Following the final, he was dropped in the West Indies after a considerably poor run in the format, where he's averaged 33.08 since December 2022. Now the batter is ready to return to the international red-ball format and take up the role of an opener in the upcoming Ashes series. "I would be happy to do that [open batting] - I would love to. If opener is where I need to bat to be playing in the Test team, that's fine," Labuschagne said. Opening is not Labuschagne's natural suit, but Cameron Green had an impressive run in seaming conditions at No. 3, which was Labuschagne's older role. Green scored 184 runs in six innings in the West Indies. This might mean that Labuschagne could be asked to try his luck as an opener yet again, and the batter was more than ready to give it a go. "If you had asked me where I prefer to bat, obviously I have batted at three my whole career, but at this stage, you don't get a choice. I opened in the World Test Championship final and felt I batted quite well. I got in but did not go on with it," he added. Labuschagne scored 39 runs over two innings in the final at Lord's, getting starts but failing to convert them. But the batter, who plays three Sheffield Shield games before the Australia home Tests, can still be in consideration, given Sam Konstas' dry run in the West Indies (50 runs from six innings). Labuschagne is still a part of the ODI setup and can feature in the upcoming three-game series against South Africa.

'I thrive on proving people wrong' - Marnus Labuschagne's fiery response to being dropped; reveals plan to return to Ashes team
Marnus Labuschagne in action during the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 vs South Africa (Photo by) Marnus Labuschagne has set his sights firmly on forcing his way back into the Australian Test side for this year's Ashes, declaring he is ready to take on the challenge of opening if that's what it takes. The 31-year-old, featuring at No.3 for much of his career, was left out of the recent West Indies tour after an extended run of modest scores. He admitted that the omission stung, but that it also sparked an immediate shift in mindset. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'You never want to be dropped,' Labuschagne told The Australian, as quoted by AP. 'But as soon as the selectors said it, my mind went straight to, 'Okay, how am I playing the Ashes … how do I make that happen?'' Instead of sitting on the setback, Labuschagne used the time away from the spotlight to the best. 'It gave me an opportunity to reflect without the pressure of everyone saying, 'Marnus has got to go'. I thrive on moments like this — proving people wrong and finding a way back,' he said. Labuschagne's most recent Test outing came in June's World Test Championship final against South Africa, where he was promoted to open but managed scores of 17 and 22. Despite that, he is willing to take the role if it means pulling on the Baggy Green again. 'I'd be happy to do that — I'd love to,' he said. 'If opener is where I need to bat to be in the Test team, that's fine. I've batted at three my whole career, but at this stage, you don't get a choice.' His willingness comes as teenager Sam Konstas, who took over the role, has struggled for consistency, while Cameron Green has settled in at No.3. Labuschagne will make his return to national colours in three home ODIs against South Africa this month before turning his attention to the Sheffield Shield. Strong domestic performances, he hopes, will convince selectors to bring him back for the five-Test Ashes series starting in Perth on November 21. Poll Will Marnus Labuschagne successfully return to the Australian Test side for the Ashes? Yes, he will make a strong comeback No, he will struggle to earn a spot For Labuschagne, the goal is clear. He aims to silence the doubters, earn his recall, and play a decisive role against England. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

South Africa announce squad for T20I Tri-Series against New Zealand & Zimbabwe
Cape Town, June 26 (UNI) South Africa have announced a 14-player squad for the upcoming T20I tri-series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand, scheduled to be played in Harare from July 14 to 26. Rassie van der Dussen, who has 50 T20I caps, will take charge of the South Africa squad that features four uncapped players for the upcoming shortest-format outings. Corbin Bosch, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Rubin Hermann and Senuran Muthusamy have all received maiden call-ups after strong domestic performances. Pretorius was the standout performer in the 2025 edition of the SA20, finishing as the leading run-scorer with 397 runs at a strike rate of 166. Wicket-keeper-batter Rubin Hermann was also impressive, scoring 333 runs at an average of 41.43. Bosch, who has already featured for the Proteas in ODIs and Tests, played a key role in MI Cape Town's title win in the SA20 earlier this year, while Muthusamy adds to South Africa's depth as a spin-bowling all-rounder. The squad also features the return of Dewald Brevis, fast bowlers Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee following their respective injury layoffs. The trio bolsters a strong bowling unit that also includes Lungi Ngidi, who was part of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 triumph and emerging pacer Kwena Maphaka, according to an ICC news. Head coach Shukri Conrad, who takes charge of his first T20I assignment since being appointed to the all-format role, said the series marks the beginning of South Africa's preparations for the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. 'With several senior players rested as part of their workload management, it creates opportunities for others to step in and show what they can offer,' said Conrad. 'This is a chance for us to build depth and see how these players cope with international demands,' he said. The squad will assemble in Pretoria on 9 July for a two-day preparatory camp before departing for Harare on 11 July. The tri-series begins with South Africa facing hosts Zimbabwe on 14 July.
