'I thrive on proving people wrong' - Marnus Labuschagne's fiery response to being dropped; reveals plan to return to Ashes team
Marnus Labuschagne
has set his sights firmly on forcing his way back into the Australian Test side for this year's Ashes, declaring he is ready to take on the challenge of opening if that's what it takes.
The 31-year-old, featuring at No.3 for much of his career, was left out of the recent West Indies tour after an extended run of modest scores. He admitted that the omission stung, but that it also sparked an immediate shift in mindset.

'You never want to be dropped,' Labuschagne told The Australian, as quoted by AP. 'But as soon as the selectors said it, my mind went straight to, 'Okay, how am I playing the Ashes … how do I make that happen?''
Instead of sitting on the setback, Labuschagne used the time away from the spotlight to the best.
'It gave me an opportunity to reflect without the pressure of everyone saying, 'Marnus has got to go'. I thrive on moments like this — proving people wrong and finding a way back,' he said.
Labuschagne's most recent Test outing came in June's World Test Championship final against South Africa, where he was promoted to open but managed scores of 17 and 22. Despite that, he is willing to take the role if it means pulling on the Baggy Green again.
'I'd be happy to do that — I'd love to,' he said. 'If opener is where I need to bat to be in the Test team, that's fine. I've batted at three my whole career, but at this stage, you don't get a choice.'
His willingness comes as teenager Sam Konstas, who took over the role, has struggled for consistency, while Cameron Green has settled in at No.3.
Labuschagne will make his return to national colours in three home ODIs against South Africa this month before turning his attention to the Sheffield Shield. Strong domestic performances, he hopes, will convince selectors to bring him back for the five-Test Ashes series starting in Perth on November 21.
Poll
Will Marnus Labuschagne successfully return to the Australian Test side for the Ashes?
Yes, he will make a strong comeback
No, he will struggle to earn a spot
For Labuschagne, the goal is clear. He aims to silence the doubters, earn his recall, and play a decisive role against England.

Nightmare game for Girona goalie Gazzaniga as La Liga starts with Rayo Vallecano win
MADRID (AP) — The first game in La Liga is already one to forget for Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. HT Image His two embarrassing first half mistakes — one leading to a goal and the other to a penalty and his ejection — helped Rayo Vallecano win in Girona 3-1 in Friday's season-opener. 'The way I see it, they were mistakes by Girona, we all made the mistakes together,' Girona coach Miguel Ángel Sánchez said. 'The mistakes were so bad that we can only see them as accidents." The first blunder came in the 18th minute when a defender passed the ball back to Gazzaniga and the Argentine goalie couldn't properly control the ball, which slipped passed him and allowed Rayo forward Jorge de Frutos to find the open net. Gazzaniga's second mistake came in the 43rd, after Rayo added to the lead through Álvaro García. The goalkeeper was pressured by De Frutos and tried to dribble past him at the edge of the area instead of clearing the ball away. De Frutos ended up with the ball and Gazzaniga had to grab him to keep the forward from scoring into another open net. The foul led to a penalty kick and to a red card to Gazzaniga. Isi Palazón converted the penalty and gave the visitors a 3-0 lead by halftime. Ten-man Girona pulled one closer with Joel Roca in the 57th. The victory allowed Rayo to pick up from where it left off last season, when it earned a European place for the first time in more than two decades. Rayo could have added to the lead in the second half but Pathé Ciss' late goal was disallowed for offside. Girona's former Atletico Madrid player Thomas Lemar debuted as a second-half substitute. It was without Uruguayan striker Cristhian Stuani because of the death of his father. Later Friday, Villarreal hosted promoted Oviedo. Defending champion Barcelona opens at Mallorca on Saturday. Atletico Madrid is at Espanyol on Sunday, while Real Madrid hosts Osasuna on Tuesday for its first match of the season. ___ AP soccer:

Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter sits out practice 'as a precaution' with an upper-body injury
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter was held out of the team's light practice Friday 'as a precaution" because of an upper-body injury. HT Image When asked whether Hunter would play in the team's preseason game at New Orleans on Sunday, coach Liam Coen added 'we don't know yet.' Hunter was on the field for the hourlong session and carried a play-calling sheet while following the action closely. 'That's what they're supposed to do when they're hurt,' Coen said. 'We want them to make sure that they're locked in, getting all the calls, understanding the call and being able to watch and execute it as well in their minds.' Hunter played on offense and defense, totaling 18 snaps, in Jacksonville's preseason opener against Pittsburgh last Saturday. The Heisman Trophy winner also played both ways during a scrimmage Thursday and crashed hard to the ground while defending a deep pass. Hunter was one of 10 players held out of Jacksonville's practice because of injury, joining right guard Chuma Edoga, right tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive lineman Maason Smith, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, safety Caleb Ransaw, linebacker Jalen McLeod and cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Montaric Brown. It's unclear if any of them will play against the Saints, leaving Coen with a tough decision to make regarding playing starters in the second exhibition. 'There's a chance,' he said. 'We got to go get this injury report and make sure because I don't really want to do too many, 'You're playing, you're not playing,' that kind of deal. "If we are putting (QB Trevor Lawrence out there), we got to make sure we're protected and we have the right guys in front. Same with the runners, things like that. Just making sure that we're not putting people in vulnerable spots because we are injured.' ___ AP NFL:

Ten Hag makes successful debut after Bayer Leverkusen wins 4-0 in German Cup
BERLIN (AP) — Erik ten Hag made a winning start as Bayer Leverkusen coach with a 4-0 result at fourth-tier team Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the German Cup on Friday. HT Image Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes. Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line. Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape. Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday. The game was interrupted in the first half by a summer storm featuring hailstones. Referee Michael Bacher led the teams off the field. It resumed after a 40-minute break. Also, Union Berlin routed Gütersloh, another fourth-tier side, 5-0 away, and second-division Magdeburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at third-division Saarbrücken. Union used dead-ball situations to take a 3-0 halftime lead, with Robert Skov firing in a free kick, and Leopold Querfeld and Danilho Doekhi scoring after corners. Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow had to go off early in the second half after indicating he was feeling dizzy. Matheo Raab went on for his Union debut but had little to do as Andrej Ilić scored and then set up Jeong Woo-yeong to complete the rout. ___ AP soccer:
