Mbappe fires France past Germany for Nations League bronze
Kylian Mbappe bagged a goal and an assist as France beat Germany 2-0 in the Nations League bronze-medal match in Stuttgart on Sunday.
Mbappe wove his magic in a heavily changed France squad.
Germany dominated the opening half but Mbappe provided the breakthrough just before half-time, carving a shot through a crowded penalty box to bring up his 50th goal in France colours.
Late in the second, with the hosts desperately looking for an equaliser, Mbappe snatched a poor Germany pass on the half-way line and rampaged forward, before setting up Michael Olise.
The French showed their incredible depth, while Mbappe again demonstrated his finishing and pace.
France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni praised his club and international teammate Mbappe, saying "he's a very important player for us and when he plays like he did today, it's just amazing."
For Germany, who lost two straight straight matches for the first time since 2023, questions remain over how much they have truly improved under Julian Nagelsmann.
Striker Niclas Fuellkrug lamented his side's wastefulness, telling DAZN: "if we had taken our first chance and scored, it could have been three or four nil for us."
In the lead-up to Sunday's encounter, France coach Didier Deschamps admitted the Nations League clash with old rivals Germany "isn't the most important game for us," with a clear focus on next year's World Cup.
Deschamps made eight changes from the semi-final loss to Spain, with only captain Mbappe, goalie Mike Maignan and midfield veteran Adrien Rabiot keeping their starting spots.
Nagelsmann also rotated heavily, making four changes including bringing Fuellkrug back into the starting XI.
The Germans had a wealth of chances in the opening half. Karim Adeyemi won a penalty but it was overturned by VAR for diving with. Florian Wirtz hit the post.
Mbappe struck just before half-time. The Real Madrid man collected a pass which floated over the 1.77-metre tall Joshua Kimmich's head, took a touch and hammered a shot home with his preferred right foot.
Nagelsmann replaced rookie striker Nick Woltemade with Deniz Undav at half-time. The move seemed to have paid immediate dividends Undav had the ball in the net, but his effort was chalked off for a foul in the build-up.
Germany dominated possession and field position, but that left them vulnerable on the break to France's lightning-fast forwards, led by Mbappe.
Marcus Thuram hit the post on 58 minutes. Then Mbappe and substitute Olise, who plays in Germany for Bayern Munich, combined to seal the match for France.
The French captain pounced on a poor Robin Koch clearance on the half-way line and ran goalwards, squaring for the onrushing Olise to tap home with six minutes remaining.
Later on Sunday, reigning Nations League and Euros champions Spain face Portugal in Munich to decide this year's crown.

Italy fires Spalletti amid prospect it could fail to qualify for 3rd straight World Cup
The fear that four-time champion Italy will fail to qualify for a third straight World Cup has cost coach Luciano Spalletti his job. Spalletti announced Sunday that he is being fired and will leave after Monday's World Cup qualifier against Moldova. The move comes two days after Italy lost 3-0 at Norway in its opening qualifier. 'Last night I had a conversation with the president (Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina) and he told me that I would be fired,' Spalletti said in a pre-match news conference at Italy's training center. 'I didn't have any intention on (leaving) and I would have preferred to stay on. But it's a sacking and I realize that.' Claudio Ranieri, who just concluded a successful season at Roma but had said he was retiring from coaching, is reportedly the federation's top choice to replace Spalletti. But the federation did not immediately name a replacement — and after the Moldova game, Italy doesn't play again until September. Spalletti was hired in August 2023 when Roberto Mancini unexpectedly left to take over Saudi Arabia's national team. Spalletti was given a three-year contract through the 2026 World Cup. Spalletti's first major tournament ended with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the round of 16 of last year's European Championship. Then Italy was eliminated from the Nations League quarterfinals after conceding an embarrassing goal to Germany earlier this year — which meant that the Azzurri entered a five-team World Cup qualifying group featuring Erling Haaland's Norway instead of a four-team group in which the highest-ranked nation is Slovakia. As India eye future, Rohit Sharma may not stay ODI captain
Mumbai: Indian selectors are expected to go with the same long-term vision with ODI captaincy as they did with Test leadership. The next ODI World Cup is slated for October, 2027 by when Rohit Sharma, the current captain, would be 40. It is difficult to predict if he would last the distance in terms of form and fitness, and to avoid having three separate captains across formats – Suryakumar Yadav is the T20I skipper – the selectors are known to be inclined to hand over ODI leadership also to Gill. Whether the move would be made right away would depend on how workload of the all-format players is spaced out in the lead up to the home T20 World Cup in February, 2026. Gill, 25, will be among them, and his show with the bat and as captain in the England Test series will also be assessed. It's unusual for Indian cricket to have a flux in the leadership group and the selectors want to address that. For the best part of the last ten years, captaincy across formats was held by Virat Kohli and then Rohit. Currently, Suryakumar is primarily seen as a T20I specialist. Rohit has quit T20Is and Tests. Rishabh Pant, the Test vice-captain, is not an automatic pick in the other formats. Gill too has work to do before he makes the T20I spot his own. Currently, 12 ODIs are scheduled until next year's T20 World Cup – the immediate priority. All those in a targetted group of players would be trialled under Suryakumar's leadership. India's next ODI series in Bangladesh in August is the yet to be confirmed. Then come three ODIs in Australia (Oct), and three each at home against South Africa (Nov-Dec) and New Zealand (Jan '26). 'Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy,' a BCCI official said. 'There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors since over his ODI future.' With regard to BCCI's tribute to Rohit on X' as he ended his Test career, which said he would continue to lead in ODIs, the board official said that was nothing more than a mention of the current status. Rohit's recent ODI batting template has been interesting. The 38-year-old has flipped a switch where he attacks in the Powerplay overs with the same intent as in T20Is. He was a hit in the 2023 ODI World Cup, in terms of strike rate as well as impact innings. But subsequently, sustaining such a tempo with any consistency has proved difficult. More than his age, slowing reflexes in the field, and his having to constantly battle niggles – Rohit played the Champions Trophy with a hamstring niggle and the IPL mostly as Impact Player – haven't inspired confidence. Rohit has repeatedly made it clear that he has no plans to quit ODIs. 'I'm not going to retire from this format, just to make sure that no rumours are spread going forward,' he said after winning the Champions Trophy final in March. 'I have retired from two formats, but I am still playing one format,' Rohit again said in May when he had a stand named after him at the Wankhede stadium. 'When India plays whichever team here (in Mumbai), that'll make it even more special.' While the romantics would want India to have another crack at ODI Cup glory under Rohit after the agonising defeat in the final to Australia in the 2023 campaign, the selectors are likely to take a more pragmatic call.
