Florian Wirtz to Liverpool latest as Germany boss replies to transfer accusation
Julian Nagelsmann spent less than two years in charge of Bayern Munich before being dismissed in March 2023, but he insists he hasn't been urging Florian Wirtz to snub the Bundesliga champions for Liverpool Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann insists he has had nothing to do with Florian Wirtz snubbing a move to Bayern Munich in order to join Liverpool. Wirtz has his heart set on a move to the newly crowned Premier League champions this summer, and the Reds have made an opening bid of around £109million - a club record fee - for the exciting attacker. It isn't yet clear whether Bayer Leverkusen will accept that offer, but there is confidence on all sides that the 22-year-old will become a Liverpool player in the coming weeks. Bayern had felt that they were in the box seat for the player voted the best in the Bundesliga over the past two seasons, but Wirtz and his camp were left unimpressed by the club when they held transfer discussions. By contrast, Wirtz was won over by the facilities on offer at Liverpool as well as the vision of head coach Arne Slot, who will be seeking to build on this season's Premier League crown in his second campaign at the club. Additionally, Wirtz will have his now former Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong by his side at Anfield should he complete the move, with the Dutch right-back sealing his own £29.5m transfer to the Reds on Friday. Nagelsmann had less than two years in charge of Bayern before he was sacked in rather acrimonious circumstances in March 2023, before being appointed Germany boss six months later. There have been some suggestions in his homeland that Nagelsmann sought to influence Wirtz's decision and push him towards making the switch to the Premier League, but the 37-year-old boss insists that isn't the case. "I've never told a player to move here or there," Nagelsmann told a press conference prior to Germany's Nations League semi-final against Portugal in Munich on Wednesday. "What's important is that he plays - and plays a similarly important role to the one he played in Leverkusen. We know that he's one of the best players in the world." Wirtz is said to want his future resolved during the current international break, with the 10-day pre-Club World Cup transfer window opening for business on Sunday.

National team coach warns Real Madrid veteran over disciplinary issues – ‘Must not happen again'
Germany's national team gathered in Bavaria on Friday to begin preparations for the UEFA Nations League Final Four. One of the most notable absentees in the camp was Real Madrid veteran Antonio Rudiger. A regular fixture in the Germany setup, the Real Madrid centre-back missed out as he is still recovering from knee surgery and is not ready to return. Advertisement Prior to his injury and surgery, Rudiger was involved in a major controversy following due to his behaviour in the Copa del Rey final Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona. With his team losing, the 32-year-old, who had been substituted due to the knee issue, lost his cool on the bench and insulted the referee while even throwing an object in his direction. Rudiger was shown a red card for his actions and hit with a six-match ban while there were also calls from several quarters for him to be punished by the German FA as well. Julian Nagelsmann issues stern warning The DFB did not impose any sanctions on Rudiger but the German national team manager Julian Nagelsmann has issued a clear warning to the Real Madrid defender in today's press conference that his actions cannot be repeated. Advertisement 'Of course, we've had a lot of dialogue about the incident. He knows my opinion that it was wrong and not good. And he has also reached the limit, he knows that. Rudi said that too, I told him that too,' said Nagelsmann, as quoted by BILD. Nagelsmann has warned Rudiger over his behaviour. (Photo by) Continuing, he added: 'I think he said it twice, that it was wrong, that it was a mistake. And there's no question about that. And he also knows that it must not happen again. 'Otherwise there will simply be greater consequences. We are very transparent with him.' In short: Rudiger cannot afford another misstep. However, Nagelsmann also emphasised: 'Nevertheless, it's also important to let people make mistakes. And if they apologise, then at some point it has to be put behind them. 'There are many moralisers, but at some point we have to accept the apology and give him the chance to do better. And he is now in the chance phase. And that's the end of it and we look forward to better behaviour in the future.' Rudiger had already issued an apology for his behaviour and must now be careful not to repeat it. Currently recovering from the knee surgery, he is expected to be available next month when Real Madrid travel to the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Nagelsmann: Ter Stegen to be Germany's number one in Nations league
Germany national coach Julian Nagelsmann takes part in a press conference, ahead of the UEFA Nations League semifinal soccer match against Portugal. Federico Gambarini/dpa Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said that Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be the starting goalkeeper in the Nations League Final Four on June 4-8. "Marc will be the number one, I've emphasized that many times. I'm very confident he'll play two top games," Nagelsmann said in a news conference on Friday. Advertisement Ter Stegen returned to the team after recovering from a serious knee injury, but it's unclear whether he will take the position between the posts. The Barcelona keeper was set to become Germany's number one after Manuel Neuer retired from the national team after last summer's Euro 2024. But the knee injury suffered in September opened the door for Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. Baumann started both matches against Italy in March. On Wednesday, Germany face 2018-19 Nations League champions Portugal in the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The winner will face either 2020-21 champions France or title holders Spain. Advertisement "The Spanish team has realized how important the Nations League can be. It can be a mini-European championship," Nagelsman said about Spain, who won the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. The coach stressed that his goal is to win the Nations League title in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup. "Of course we want to win both games (semi-finals and final), we'd love to win the title. We want to boost our confidence. We want to get to the point where we can win titles – even if it's a small one," he said. Rüdiger in 'opportunityphase' after outburst Nagelsmann said that Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger knows that "the limit was reached" with his outburst during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona last month. Advertisement "He knows my opinion, that it's not good and that the limit was reached. He also knows that this can't happen again, otherwise there will be major consequences. We are very transparent," Nagelsmann said. Rüdiger was sent off for throwing an object at the referee and angrily reacting to a foul given against team-mate Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle. Barcelona won the match 3-2. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea said in his report that Rüdiger was dismissed for "throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me." The defender reportedly threw an ice cube at the official. Rüdiger has apologized for the incident. "At some point we have to accept the apology. He's in the opportunity phase now. That's over for me, too. I look forward to better behaviour in the future," Nagelsmann added.

Julian Nagelsmann sends message to Florian Wirtz over Liverpool transfer
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann believes Florian Wirtz would be making a 'very good step' in his career by joining Liverpool. Wirtz has scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen and last season won the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the German Super Cup with the club under Xabi Alonso. But the Germany international, who is considered one of the finest attacking midfielders in European football, is expected to follow Alonso out the exit door at Leverkusen when the summer transfer window opens for business. Bayern Munich have long been linked with Wirtz and the 22-year-old reached a verbal agreement over a proposed witch to the Allianz Arena earlier this month. However, Liverpool have muscled their way to the front of the queue and Wirtz has reportedly 'given his word' to the newly crowned Premier League champions, with Bayern's president appearing to confirm the rumour on Sunday. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. 'Max Eberl (Bayern's director of sport) informed me that Florian Wirtz is probably leaning towards Liverpool,' Herbert Hainer said. 'We'll provide you with facts at some point and not with further speculation. You are responsible for that.' It's understood Liverpool are prepared to pay between €130m (£109m) and €150m (£126m) to wrap up the signing and Wirtz has already started looking for houses in the north west of England. Given the importance of the decision, Wirtz reached out to Nagelsmann for some advice on his next steps. 'He texted me. We exchanged a few messages,' Germany manager Nagelsmann told Sky Sport Deutschland. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I tried to give him tips to the best of my knowledge and belief, but I told him I can't make the decision for him because my opinion is not necessarily the right one. The final decision is his. 'I didn't rule out any club, I just tried to explain things to him and give him tips. 'I'm excited to find out about his decision. We always hear that things are done. It was also said with Bayern before that it was done. Let's wait.' According to Nagelsmann, the 'great environment' Arne Slot has created at Liverpool would be a good fit for Wirtz. More Trending 'You can look at it from different points of view. In the end, every player has to decide for himself,' the ex-Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig manager added. 'It's not official, but if it's Liverpool, then it'd be a very good step because he can play in his position, a great environment, great club. 'Bayern wouldn't have been a bad option either. It would've been good to have them [Wirtz and Musiala] playing together, but Jamal and Flo can get on well together even if they're not at the same club. 'The most important thing is that he plays and continues to develop. If he feels that he would be better off at Liverpool, then he has to do it.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Hübner confirmed as Nagelsmann's Germany assistant after June games
Hoffenheim assistant coach Benjamin Huebner laughs at his official farewell. Hoffenheim assistant coach Benjamin Hübner is in the running to replace Sandro Wagner as Julian Nagelsmann's Germany assistant. Uwe Anspach/dpa Hoffenheim assistant coach Benjamin Hübner has been confirmed as Julian Nagelsmann's Germany assistant coach from July. The 35-year-old retired German defender, who played under Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim, comes in after the Nations League Final Four in June and has signed a deal until Euro 2028 - just like his boss. Advertisement "I know Benni very well from our three years together at Hoffenheim," Nagelsmann said in a statement on Saturday. "He was always a real team player who was passionate about the team's success and put his own interests aside." Hübner will replace Sandro Wagner, who is leaving after the Nations League finale to try to carve out a managerial role for himself. "It's a great honour to be able to work for the national team," said Hübner, who never gained international honours as a player, "I had my most successful time at Hoffenheim under Julian Nagelsmann, it had a huge impact on me as a player, but also for my later job as assistant coach." Advertisement Hoffenheim only just avoided relegation in the Bundesliga this term. Germany face a Nations League semi-final against Portugal on June 4 in Munich, with the final on June 8 in the Bavarian capital. World Cup qualifying in September will be Hübner's first taste of the international touchline.
