Michail Antonio makes return for Jamaica SIX MONTHS after his near-fatal car crash - as forward's West Ham future remains uncertain
Michail Antonio returned to the pitch for the first time since his near fatal car crash last December.
The 35-year-old came off the bench in 85th minute of Jamaica's 1-0 loss to Guatemala in the Gold Cup in California.
Antonio was unable to prevent Jamaica from suffering a group stage defeat, but the his brief cameo proved a milestone moment in his recovery.
The West Ham forward had not featured in a match since crashing his Ferrari into a tree in December, an accident that left the striker with extensive injuries and lucky to be alive.
Antonio suffered a lower limb fracture in the car accident and required surgery.
He was released from hospital at the end of December last year.
Antonio had been working hard to return to fitness in recent months, flying out for warm-weather training in Dubai in February.
West Ham boss Graham Potter revealed the forward had been kicking balls again with the first team squad in the closing stages of last season.
Antonio did not feature in the closing weeks of West Ham's season, but was still included in Steve McLaren's Jamaica squad for the Gold Cup.
He was absent from their recent World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala and the British Virgin Islands earlier this month, but came on for the closing stages in their Gold Cup opener.
Antonio will hope to feature more in Jamaica's remaining group stage matches against Guadeloupe and Panama.
The forward will be keen to prove his fitness with his West Ham contract, which is believed to be around £90,000 a week, coming to an end.
West Ham's leading Premier League goalscorer is currently weighing up his options after rejecting a short-term deal on lower wages.
'He's looking at what offers he gets,' a senior Hammers source recently told Mail Sport.
West Ham announced earlier this month they will continue to support Antonio throughout his comeback, even though he will officially been listed as a ' free transfer '.
'Given Michail Antonio's unique situation, following his serious road traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate,' the statement read.
'However, as his current contract is also due to expire on 30 June, for the purposes of the Premier League Retained List procedure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Michail will be listed as a free transfer.
'As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the club's absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level.'

Sell Kudus, buy Duran - fan views on summer transfers
With the transfer window now open again until 1 September, we asked you to tell us one player you want West Ham to sign, and a player you want to be sold this are some of your comments:Max: For a purchase, Christian Norgaard from Brentford would be a mass improvement on our lethargic midfield. As for a sale, it would all depend. If we receive an offer worth £70m+ for Kudus, then I would definitely accept it. If not, then probably Guido Rodriguez or Edson Alvarez to free up some space. Bob: We have got to get a striker, preferably Jhon Duran. I don't know why we still have Mavropanos, he has never done us any good!Dave: I recall Nayef Aguerd played about six good-enough games after he came in and he has not been selected since so should go. Alphonso Davies seems to be in third preference at Bayern on the left of midfield, we should tempt him with more game time. Daryl: I would sell Rodriguez, Mavrapanos and (reluctantly) Kudus. Buy? A striker! Maybe go for Brobbey again. Or loan one of Chelsea's dozen I would go for a new keeper. Slightly left field choice but Kepa. If he went to Arsenal he would be back-up to Raya but at West Ham has a strong claim to be number one. I would sell Kudus if the right offer comes in, purely because it affords greater financial wiggle room in terms of Paqueta out. Cash in on what is possible and reinvest in Jhon Duran. Nick: I would sell Nayef Aguerd. He had a successful loan spell out at Real Sociedad last season so we could get a good fee for him and he wants to leave so we should cash in. We should sign another centre back to replace him, someone who can challenge Kilman, Todibo and Mavropanos for a starting place. I would like us to sign Koni de Winter (a Belgian centre back who plays for Genoa).

The veteran forward had been out of action since the December wreck, which left him with a serious lower leg fracture and lucky to be alive. He was airlifted to hospital and rushed into surgery and spent the rest of the season fighting to get back on his feet. Released from hospital before the New Year, Antonio threw himself into rehab, including a warm-weather training stint in Dubai in February. West Ham insiders later revealed he had been 'kicking balls again' with the squad by season's end. Two weeks ago he released an inspiring video on social media charting his battle from hardly being able to walk to getting back into full training. The video started with footage of the wreckage with a voice asking, 'How the f**k did you get out of that' before showing clips of him going through pain in the gym as he rebuilt strength in his lower limb to running and eventually kicking balls. He made an emotional return to the London Stadium for West Ham's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in March. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Although he didn't feature again for the Hammers before the campaign closed, Jamaica boss Steve McLaren still named him in the Gold Cup squad. While Antonio couldn't prevent a group-stage defeat, his late cameo marked a major milestone in a recovery many thought might never happen. His return has now become the feel-good story of the tournament. Antonio, who missed recent World Cup qualifiers, will be eyeing more minutes in group matches against Guadeloupe and Panama. But it's not just pride on the line, his future is up in the air. West Ham star Michail Antonio shares footage of himself learning to walk again after escaping death in horror crash The club's all-time top Premier League goalscorer is out of contract at the end of June and recently turned down a short-term extension on lower wages. He's said to be earning around £90,000 a week but is now weighing up his next move. A Hammers insider told SunSport: 'Michail has been working hard on his recovery and to have returned to action for his country in six months is almost miraculous. 'That shows the sort of person he is. He has given the club great service and we'll of course review with him his situation when he returns back home. It's an ongoing process.' Michail Antonio's incredible rise By Jon Boon The outpouring of love from the football community for Michael Antonio has been massive, with the striker recognised as a big character in the game. The Wandsworth-born forward started from humble beginnings - playing for non-league Tooting & Mitcham United. After impressing in 2008, he was offered a trial at Reading - some five divisions up - and Alan Pardew duly snapped him up. However, he later revealed he got kicked out by Tooting, after he refused to sign a contract. Antonio said: "They kicked me out because I refused to sign a contract. 'I was like: 'If someone comes in for me I don't want to be tied down. I want to be able to go and not you out price me'." Following spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, in 2015 he was plucked from the Championship in a £7million deal by West Ham. He's been there ever since, winning a player of the year award, twice being named Premier League player of the month and lifting a European trophy. Away from football, Antonio has bravely opened up about his mental health struggles in recent times. The Jamaica international was recently asked by Gary Lineker on the Rest is Football podcast what he would like to do when he retires from the game. He revealed: "I want to go into entertainment. "So more on the basis of A League of Their Own, Play to the Whistle…" Read more about Michail Antonio's incredible rise and life away from the game. 9 Michail Antonio posted an inspirational video of his rehab efforts Credit: Instagram
