DJ Lagway cracks top five in CBS Sports' 2025 SEC QB rankings

USA Today22-07-2025
Florida football quarterback DJ Lagway has cracked the top five in CBS Sports' 2025 SEC quarterback rankings.
The sophomore was ranked right at the No. 5 spot by CBS Sports' Brad Crawford. In the rankings, Lagway trailed John Mateer (Oklahoma Sooners), LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina Gamecocks), Arch Manning (Texas Longhorns) and Garrett Nussmeier (LSU Tigers).
Crawford mentioned that people around the Florida Gators football program have given Lagway the title of being the best quarterback to play for the Orange and Blue since Tim Tebow.
If Lagway can show signs of improvement and progress throughout his collegiate career, there's no doubt that he has a chance to be up there with Tebow when it's all said and done in terms of being one of the best quarterbacks to play for the Gators.
During his freshman season, Lagway played in 12 games while starting seven, tallying a 6-1 record in those starts. He threw for 1,915 yards on 115-of-192 passing (59.9 percent), 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing 51 times for 101 yards.
Although those nine interceptions can jump off the page, it's important to note that Lagway was in his first year playing collegiate football facing a gauntlet of a schedule in the SEC.
With a year of experience under his belt, Lagway should take a big step forward in terms of improvement going into his sophomore campaign for the Gators.
Here is everything Crawford said about Lagway and his position as Florida's quarterback.
What CBS Sports said about Lagway
"Florida's quarterback did not throw this spring while dealing with an undisclosed shoulder situation, but has been labeled by most around the program as the Gators' top player at the position since Tim Tebow. That's high praise and brings significant -- perhaps unobtainable expectations -- as a first-year starter in 2025.
"He has next-level traits and showed plenty of that when he helped the Gators beat nationally-ranked Ole Miss, LSU and Tulane late last fall. And what Lagway has that only a few others do in these rankings is elite talent around him at wide receiver."

ESPN breaks down, ranks Florida's College Football Playoff chances

Florida football recently emerged from a nadir in program history with its first winning season in its last four tries, as well as its lone bowl game win since 2019 — thanks in large part to quarterback DJ Lagway, as well as fundamental improvements ushered in by coach Billy Napier. The recent success has the Gator Nation excited once again for its favorite gridiron game and expectations have followed the Orange and Blue up the win column. Now stocked with veteran talent as well as highly-heralded newcomers, Napier and Co. are looking to take this team to the next level in 2025. One of their goals this fall is to crack the 12-team College Football Playoff, which would give the Gators a legitimate chance at a national championship. However, the road to the postseason is a rough one as Florida faces arguably the toughest schedule in the sport this coming fall. Ahead of the opening kickoff just weeks away, ESPN's Heather Dinich ranked the top 32 FBS schools based on their percentage chance of making the playoffs, while also offering a breakdown of the teams' outlooks. The Gators landed at No. 25, in between the No. 24 Arizona Sun Devils and No. 26 Kansas Jayhawks. Florida football's stats and numbers Agree or disagree with ESPN Analytics? "Agree," Dinich states. "Florida might have the best quarterback in the country in DJ Lagway, but it also has the most difficult schedule in the FBS. Again. The Gators are a long shot to win the SEC, and their chances of earning an at-large bid hinge on their ability to beat a lineup comprised mainly of top-25 teams." Florida's toughest test in 2025 "Nov. 1 vs. Georgia," she offers. "The Gators also have to face Texas in October, but the history between the Gators and Bulldogs runs deep. ESPN's FPI gives Georgia a 79.7% chance to win. Florida lost to both Georgia and Texas last year in back-to-back weeks. This year, the Gators have a bye week to prepare for Georgia." What the selection committee will like about Florida "A Sept. 20 road win against Miami. The committee factors in the intangibles of rivalry games, and an in-state win against what should be a ranked Canes team would earn Florida some credit in the room. It could increase in value if Miami wins the ACC and clinches a spot in the playoff as one of the committee's five highest-ranked conference champs," Dinich notes. "Even if Miami doesn't win the ACC, the head-to-head tiebreaker could be a factor in the room if both teams are competing for an at-large spot. This is also the kind of nonconference win that could help separate Florida from the Big 12 runner-up if they're competing for an at-large spot." What the selection committee will not like about Florida "An injury to Lagway," she declares. "His health is critical to the team's success, and the committee considers injuries to key players — which is why undefeated Florida State didn't make the CFP in 2023 as the ACC champ. That's not to say that Florida couldn't make the playoff without Lagway — in 2014 Ohio State won the national title with its third-string quarterback. "But the Gators would have to prove to the committee that they still look like a playoff team with Lagway sidelined. He has already dealt with a shoulder injury, a lower body injury and a hamstring injury during his career." Former Texas players on the 2025 Longhorns' schedule

As Texas heads into the 2025 season, they are slated to face a number of familiar faces. Leading the way, a trio of former Longhorns will be waiting for Texas in Starkville later in the year. In one of the final games of last season, Texas ran into Arizona State and a number of former Longhorns, Zac Swanson, J'Mond Tapp, Troy Omeire and Prince Dorbah. They've had a number of former Longhorns move on to other Power 4 programs and a few that even found their way to other SEC programs. That movement is lessened, because of the rule that intra-conference transfers in the SEC can only occur during the winter window. Despite that, Texas will run into several familiar faces in the 2025 season, but it will take until October 25th, when they go to Starkville. There are a trio of former Longhorns on the Bulldogs this year that figure to play big roles. Brenen Thompson is further removed from his time at Texas, with a stop at Oklahoma in between. He has now found his way to Mississippi State and could very well end up being WR1 for the Bulldogs. On defense, you have two rotational pieces in Jaray Bledsoe up front and Derion Gullette that should play a role in that defense. The following week, Texas returns home against Vanderbilt and will welcome a former Longhorn back to Austin. Aaron Bryant found his way to Nashville this offseason and figures to play a large role in their defensive front. Bryant only totaled one tackle a year ago for Texas, but was a top 10 prospect in Mississippi coming out of high school. We will see if he can reach that potential for the Commodores. Texas gets a brief hiatus from seeing former players against Georgia and Arkansas, but they are quickly back to it for the Lone Star Showdown. Amari Niblack, the former transfer into Texas from Alabama, has made his way to College Station for the 2025 season. He is in great position to be the starter for Texas A&M to start the season, and could put together his best season yet. We will know going into that one how much Niblack will factor in, but he could be a major part of the gameplan for the Aggies this year. That does it for the former Longhorns that are set in stone on Texas' schedule, but there are a couple more they could run into late on. In a possible SEC title, they could very well see Sydir Mitchell and LSU or Jalen Catalon and Missouri. If Texas makes their third playoff in a row, there are plenty of other names that could factor into this equation. In the transfer portal world, there have been a number of 'homecoming' games in the last few years. Texas is slated to have a number of those this upcoming season, with Mississippi State being something of a reunion. We will see how much some of those players factor into the equation for their new teams, but it will be nice to see some familiar faces facing the Longhorns in 2025.

Former Iowa football running back accepts new coaching position

When players go through the Iowa football system, they become so much more knowledgeable of the game and can think football at a higher level than others. That's a big reason why so many Hawkeyes find their way into the NFL and usually stick around longer than some may expect. But for those who weren't able to make it to the league, that knowledge doesn't evaporate. Some players use it to be involved with the game in a different aspect: coaching. And this former Iowa football running back is the next in a great line of Hawkeyes turned into coaches. Bemidji State University football announced on X that it had hired former Hawkeye running back Ivory Kelly-Martin to be its running backs coach for the 2025 season. Bemidji State is a Division II school located in Bemidji, Minnesota. They compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Kelly-Martin played at Iowa from 2017-2021, appearing in 44 games. He had 181 carries for 804 yards and six rushing touchdowns in those 44 games. He spent a lot of time backing up Tyler Goodson and providing valuable snaps. While he wasn't a star at Iowa, Kelly-Martin was well respected by his teammates and coaching staff and was a true steward of the game. That was evident with his inclusion on the 2021 Players Council. Before accepting this position with Bemidji State, Kelly-Martin was a graduate assistant running backs coach at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. With his Master's in Business Administration all finished up, he can now start his coaching career with the Bemidji State Beavers. Hawkeye fans wish Kelly-Martin the best of luck as the next chapter of his life begins.
