Natural calamities damaged 119 schools in Mandi district's Seraj: HP minister
Since the calamity, however, 90 per cent of these schools have been reopened, he said.
Shimla, Jul 16 (PTI) Cloud bursts, floods, and landslides have damaged 119 schools in the Seraj Assembly constituency in Mandi district, Himachal Education Minister Rohit Thakur said on Wednesday.
He said the government may hire buildings and other spaces to relocate the damaged schools.
The minister said instructions have been issued that no school or college building would be constructed on the banks of rivers.
Searches are still underway to trace the 27 who were washed away after 10 cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides wreaked havoc in various parts of Mandi on the night of June 30-July 1 and resulted in the deaths of 15 people, authorities said.
Thakur recently attended a meeting on bolstering the education system in border and tribal areas in Ladakh, discussing such challenges as low population density, tough terrain and paucity of funds faced by north-eastern states like Assam, Meghalaya and hill states like Ladakh.
There are about 850 such schools in Himachal Pradesh, he added.
Issues like adoption of CBSE curriculum, training of teachers and strengthening of basic infrastructure were also discussed in that meeting, he said. PTI BPL VN VN

Over 5.76 lakh Bihar electors enrolled at multiple places: EC data
New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) The Election Commission (EC) has so far found that over 5.76 lakh electors in Bihar are enrolled at multiple places and over 12.55 lakh have probably died. As the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state's voters' list continues, official data also states that out of nearly 7.90 crore electors, over 35.69 lakh were not found at their addresses during the house-to-house visit of booth-level officers. According to data, over 17.37 lakh electors have probably permanently shifted. The poll authority underlined that the figures will change in the coming days. On July 14, the poll panel had said that as on that date, the names of over 6.60 crore or 83.66 per cent of the total 7.89 crore electors of Bihar will be included in the draft electoral roll to be published on August 1. The figures would change later. The list will include all electors whose forms have been received by the deadline. Focused efforts through newspaper advertisements and direct contact are being made with electors who may have temporarily migrated out of the state to ensure that they are able to fill their enumeration forms (EFs) well in time and have their names also included in the draft roll. The EC said as of Thursday, 89.7 per cent of the existing electors (7.08 crore) have given their EFs to be included in the draft electoral roll. To re-verify the electors who have not been found at their addresses even after three visits of BLOs, the information on such persons who are probably deceased, permanently shifted or have enrolled at multiple places is being shared with district presidents of political parties and the 1.5 lakh booth-level agents appointed by them so that the exact status of such electors can be confirmed by them before July 25. Special camps are also being set up in all the 5,683 wards of all 261 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of Bihar to facilitate the voters. India non-committal on revival of RIC framework
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) India on Thursday indicated that any revival of the Russia-India-China (RIC) mechanism hinges on mutual convenience of the three countries. New Delhi's comments came hours after the Chinese foreign ministry said Beijing supports Russia's initiative to revive the RIC mechanism as it not only serves the interest of the three countries but also helps uphold the security and stability of the region. 'This consultative format is a mechanism where the three countries come and discuss global issues and regional issues of interest to them," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing. 'As to when this particular RIC format meeting is going to be held, it is something that will be worked out among the three countries in a mutually convenient manner," he said responding to a question. Official sources said no meeting of the RIC format has been agreed to at this point in time and there are no discussions underway on its scheduling. Russian media quoted Russia's deputy foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko as saying on Thursday that Moscow expects the resumption of the RIC format and is discussing this issue with Beijing and New Delhi. 'This topic appears in our negotiations with both of them. We are interested in making this format work, because these three countries are important partners, besides the founders of BRICS," Rudenko said. Work under the RIC format was stalled, first because of the Covid pandemic and later by the India-China military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last year. Under the RIC framework, the foreign ministers of the three countries used to meet periodically to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues of their interest.
