‘20 to 30 bullets fired': Utah ISKCON temple targeted in suspected hate crime

Hindustan Times2 days ago
The ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, renowned globally for hosting the annual Holi Festival, has come under attack in a suspected hate crime, with over two dozen bullets fired at the premises over several days, causing significant structural damage. According to ISKCON, 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the temple building and surrounding property during night time hours while devotees and guests were inside. The incident resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, including to the temple's intricately hand-carved arches.
Condemning the attack, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco expressed solidarity with the community and urged swift action. In a post on X, it stated, "We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice."
A similar incident had occurred earlier this year when, on March 9, a Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California, was found desecrated just days ahead of a so-called 'Khalistani referendum' in Los Angeles, according to temple authorities.
The official page of BAPS for the United States shared the details of the March 9 desecration on the social media platform X and emphasised the community's resilience. "In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stands steadfast against hate... Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail," BAPS Public Affairs wrote.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also pointed to the incident on X, linking it to rising anti-Hindu sentiment and noting that the vandalism came shortly before the planned 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles.
"Another Hindu Temple vandalised, this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA... Not surprisingly, this happens as the day for a so-called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close," CoHNA posted, while listing other recent temple attacks since 2022 and calling for an investigation.
Last year, acts of vandalism also targeted the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, on the night of September 25. That incident followed closely after a similar attack on a BAPS temple in New York.
Messages such as "Hindus go back" were found scrawled during those attacks, deeply alarming the local Hindu community. Despite repeated provocations, community leaders continue to affirm their unity and commitment to confronting hate.

Schools shutting, liquor shops coming up in state: Akhilesh

Varanasi: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led govt in Uttar Pradesh saying the state was opening of new liquor shops in large numbers, while schools were being closed. Addressing party workers after inaugurating his new home-cum-office built on a campus of over 3 bigha area in the Anwarganj area of Azamgarh district on Thursday, Akhilesh criticised BJP govt for "poor state of education and basic facilities". He said BJP was shutting down booths in assembly areas where they lost in the 2022 assembly election. "It is shocking how thousands of schools are being closed while liquor stores are being opened without restraint," he said. Akhilesh added, "Water tanks built in villages under Jal Jeevan Mission are unable to bear burden of corruption, leading to incidents of tank bursts in various districts every month." He compared the Purvanchal Expressway with the Gorakhpur Link Expressway and termed the six-lane roads built during his regime as superior. He also accused BJP of double standards in reservation and secularism. To ensure his party got voted to power in 2027, Akhilesh set goal for party leaders and cadres to secure all seats from Ghaziabad to Sonbhadra for PDA. Akhilesh said if voted to power in UP in 2027, he would ensure every family received 300 units free electricity, iPads and Samajwadi pension of Rs 3,000 for women. He also assured termination of Central govt's Agniveer scheme and strengthening of border security. The meeting was not free of drama by over-enthused SP supporters. One worker jumped into the 'D' security circle in front of the main dais and when he did not leave despite repeated requests from senior leaders, party volunteers and police ousted him. Responding to call of a Brahmin organisation and Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha, many Brahmin families installed black flags at their homes to express their anger against the alleged anti-Brahmin statement of Akhilesh following the Etawah incident.

Minds, machines & morality: Principles & paradoxes in

Transparency and explainability are essential for building trust in AI. The deep learning models like GPT-4 are fundamentally 'black boxes', as they generate outputs by computing a large set of complex probabilistic relationships across billions of parameters. So, in such cases, forcing machines to produce human-understandable explanations for their decisions is not just difficult, but can also be misleading and counterproductive. Accountability, too, becomes quite murky in distributed AI systems. Meanwhile, the push for risk-based regulation, especially visible in the EU AI Act, 2024, offers a pragmatic pathway but also suffers from rigidity. A tool categorized as low-risk today might be repurposed into a high-risk context tomorrow. Generative models that began as daily assistants now offer professional level medical and legal advice. Without continuous and rigorous reassessment, risk tiers may become outdated and thus, allowing 'risk-washing' by actors who underreport capabilities to evade scrutiny. So, where do we go from here to ensure that AI gets regulated and serves humanity? First, AI regulations must be adaptive. Features like built-in sunset clauses, timely and regularly updating risk tiers and using sandboxes to test innovation under supervision can act as dynamic components. Second, there should be confluence of traceable causality with tiered liability across the AI lifecycle to assign accountability: developers for design flaws, deployers for misuse and auditors for systemic bias. Third, the laws must promote ethical pluralism as fairness which cannot be standardized globally but it can be localized. Fourth, we may think of integrating AI oversight with sectoral regulators—finance, health, transport; rather than building new siloed verticals. And fifth, we need global governance coalitions that bridge nations on core values and build consensus. In conclusion, it can be said that regulating AI isn't just a legal exercise, rather it's an ideological balancing act for human civilization. Like the samudra manthan in Hindu mythology, AI law must separate promise from peril, efficiency from exploitation and progress from predation. To do this, we must move towards responsive, adaptive, rights-anchored and risk-sensitive regulation. Kunal Srivastava | Director (Finance), Department of Telecommunications (Views are personal)

Mumbai Economic Offences Wing takes custody of hijack threat accused Birju Salla in Rs 12.77 crore fraud case

Ahmedabad: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police took custody of Birju Salla, a Mumbai-based businessman previously convicted in a hijack threat case, from the Ahmedabad city crime branch on Thursday morning. The action follows his arrest in a multi-crore cheating case involving a jewellery businessman in Mumbai. According to crime branch officials, Salla was arrested on Wednesday from a five-star hotel on Ashram Road where he checked in under a false identity. He was wanted in connection with a Rs 12.77 crore jewellery fraud registered by the EOW of Mumbai police. Soon after his arrest, a Mumbai police team arrived in Ahmedabad and formally took over his custody for further investigation. Salla is already under scrutiny in two separate threat note cases — one involving a bomb threat on an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad to Jeddah in Nov 2024, and another targeting the Ahmedabad airport in Jan this year. He gained notoriety in 2017 after planting a hijack threat note on a Jet Airways flight and was the first person to be booked under the stringent Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but was later acquitted by the Gujarat high court in 2023 due to lack of evidence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad In the Mumbai case, complainant Shailesh Jain, a jewellery businessman from Zaveri Bazaar, alleged that Salla took jewellery worth Rs 14 crore on approval in Nov 2024 and failed to return articles valued at Rs 12.77 crore.
