The KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has confirmed that the province is ready to deal with the cold front this weekend which will affect the 98th Comrades Marathon.
On Friday, Buthelezi said that after receiving alerts from the South African Weather Service (Saws) on Thursday, disaster management centres were activated to ensure a coordinated response and issue the early warning notifications.
Saws predicted very cold weather in KZN starting Sunday evening and lasting until Tuesday. The province was also mentioned as one of eight provinces where disruptive snowfall is likely.
"As a department, we would like to reassure all runners, spectators, visitors, businesses, motorists and residents that our disaster management teams are fully prepared to respond to any incidents that may result from the extreme weather," said the MEC.

For Gauteng, Tuesday will be the coldest day of the year, with many regions reaching subzero temperatures in the morning. However, SAWS cautions that a cold front is expected to approach the coast, bringing an increased risk of light rain and gusty winds by late afternoon, with winds reaching up to 40 km/h along the beachfront.

Residents across South Africa are urged to prepare for a dramatic shift in weather this weekend, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts snow, icy temperatures and hazardous conditions linked to a powerful cut-off low-pressure system. The system is expected to begin affecting the Western and Northern Cape early on Saturday, June 7, before moving eastwards. By Monday and Tuesday, this extensive and severe winter weather system will have shifted further east over South Africa, affecting the central and eastern provinces,' SAWS stated. Significant drops in daytime temperatures are expected in all provinces except Limpopo. SAWS has advised small stock farmers to take precautions to protect their animals from exposure to extreme cold and strong winds. Snowfall is expected in almost every province, excluding Limpopo. In some areas, snow could be disruptive, impacting travel and transport, particularly along key routes such as the N3 at Van Reenen's Pass on Monday and Tuesday. Inland areas will experience strong, damaging winds from Sunday. These conditions will heighten the risk of wildfires over the central and eastern interior, especially just before the cold front arrives. Along the coast, strong to near-gale force winds and rough seas will develop from Friday along the south-west coastline.
