Swim great joins Australian Olympic Committee board
O'Neill and AusCycling chairman Craig Bingham joined the board on Saturday at the AOC's annual general meeting in Sydney.
Queenslander O'Neill, who won two Olympic gold medals, four silver and two bronze, is eager to chip in ahead of Brisbane's 2032 Olympics.
"Now is a good time in my life to get back involved in the Olympic movement," the 51-year-old told reporters.
"I'm passionate about the Olympics.
"The lead-in to Brisbane 2032 is really exciting, I want to be a part of it, I want to be around athletes.
"I want to help athletes as much as I can, using my experience as an athlete and then other things I have learnt along the way."
Melbourne-based businessman Bingham said joining the board was a "great honour".
"Business and sport really go hand-in-hand," he said.
"It's all about people and culture.
"How do we foster a great culture where everybody feels part of a high performing entity, and that's what I hope to bring."
O'Neill and Bingham were elected to the two vacancies from 13 candidates.

Virgin Australia to bring back pop-up Velocity 1 Point store across three Aussie cities
Virgin Australia is bringing back its Velocity Frequent Flyers 1 Point Rewards Store in three Aussie cities. The airline announced it would be bringing back its loyalty reward program after its sellout debut on Chapel St in Melbourne in 2023. For one day only, Velocity members will be able to redeem items such Bose, Dyson and GHD hair products, designer perfumes, Virgin Australia flights and Lounge access for one Velocity Point. It will first hit Sydney's Pitt St on Friday, August 22 between 8am and 9am, with dates and locations for Melbourne and Brisbane still to be announced. From 8am on August 22, members will be able to redeem one reward per member, per location. Upon claiming a reward, one point will be deducted from the Velocity member account in-store. Members must have the app downloaded and one point in their Velocity account to be eligible. The pop-up shops will feature a mystery prize carousel and claw machines, with Virgin Australia crew on the scene to help. Velocity Frequent Flyer chief executive Nick Rohrlach said it was easier than ever to earn points in every day life. 'Velocity is all about getting our members to rewards faster and the 1 Point Rewards Store puts the spotlight on that. With Velocity, earning Points is easy and fast,' he said 'You don't need to spend big or wait long for your next reward – spending daily on things like your morning coffee, a tank of fuel, weekly grocery shop or mobile phone bill could get you there in no time.'

Olympic legend Cathy Freeman has never met Latrell Mitchell but admires the way the Rabbitohs star 'represents his family and community and culture', and is inspiring the next generation of Indigenous sports stars. The 400m gold medallist from the 2000 Sydney Games also recalled being intimidated by coach Michael Maguire when asked to address the South Sydney playing group before the 2014 grand final, and revealed winger Alex Johnston was the one player she feared taking on in a foot race. Freeman rarely gives media interviews, but spoke to this masthead as she joined Souths to help celebrate Indigenous Round on Saturday night. Freeman was asked to join Souths, who have no fewer than 11 Indigenous players in their line-up, having addressed the group the day before the 2014 grand final. She later appeared in a famous photo sitting next to the premiership trophy with Greg Inglis, who was due to lead the players onto the field for the game against Parramatta on Saturday. The two Bunnies Freeman was keenest to meet for the first time were Mitchell, one of the biggest Indigenous sports stars in the country, and coach Wayne Bennett. 'Wayne's a bit of a legend, isn't he?' Freeman said. 'And while I've never met Latrell, I love the way he competes, the way he represents his family and community and culture, and the way he's captured everyone's imagination. 'You also have to admire someone who uses their voice and stands up for what he believes in. That's never difficult to do if you are being true to who you are.'

Australian middle-distance runner Claudia Hollingsworth has shattered the women's 800m national record, achieving the feat during the Silesia Diamond League in Poland. The 20-year-old Victorian, coached by former Australian champion Craig Mottram, crossed fifth with a time of 1:57.67. That beat the previous national record — Catriona Bisset's 1:57.78 in 2023 — by 0.11s, with Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson from Britain taking gold. 'I'm trying to be more aggressive and try different ways of racing leading into (the world championships in) Tokyo because those heats are going to be quick leading into the semis and hopefully the final. 'I had a look at myself in the mirror the other week and said that I don't want to be predictable. I don't want to just sit in during races and do my classic 200m kick. 'I want to be able to do that no matter where I'm positioned and if that's up the front then I want to try that.'
