Carter Co. Commission honors Remarkable Woman Angie Odom at Monday meeting

Yahoo20-05-2025

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Carter County Commission approved a resolution on Monday to recognize Commissioner Angie Odom after she was named News Channel 11's 2025 Remarkable Woman earlier this spring.
The commission's agenda for Monday's meeting said the resolution aimed to recognize Odom for representing the Tri-Cities as a Nexstar Remarkable Woman this year.
Odom runs the TLC Community Center in Elizabethton, which provides resources and services to mothers and even grandparents who are raising their grandchildren in the region. She's run the center for 25 years.

'I was a bit surprised,' Odom said Monday night. 'From the committee to now, this wasn't something that I felt was necessary, but I'm very honored. And it was very thoughtful. And I appreciate those who supported the resolution, and I'm just honored that God has allowed me to serve for 25 years now, serve this county and the Tri-Cities.'
Odom said that the Remarkable Women initiative has helped her center in many ways during a time it's needed: a big move.
'Because of this, it has shown more attention towards the TLC. That has come at a wonderful time when we had some needs. And it's just been amazing, at the companies that have reached out and were saying, you know, 'we want to help with the gravel' or 'we want to help with concrete' or, you know, 'we just want to help you move.''
More information about the TLC Community Center can be found on its website.

Carter County Detention Center receives state accreditation

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Carter County Detention Center was awarded a Tier 1 Accreditation status by the Tennessee Corrections Institute (TCI) on Wednesday. According to a news release from the Carter County Sheriff's Office, the detention center's accreditation marks the first milestone achievement through the TCI. Tree trunk plows into Carter County home 'Our staff has worked diligently to meet the required standards to achieve accreditation, and I am thrilled to see their hard work rewarded,' Jail Administrator Captain Matt Patterson said in the release. TCI evaluates accreditation based on employee training, agency policies, availability of programs to reduce inmate recidivism, available medical services for inmates and the jail's physical facility, the news release stated. 'Captain Patterson and his staff worked tirelessly to meet these standards and achieve Tier 1 Accreditation by the TCI for the first time in the department's history,' Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said in the release. 'This achievement is all the more meaningful and impressive when you look at where this facility was three years ago, when it was on the cusp of losing state certification. Having the right leadership team in place, combined with a commitment from the County Commission to invest in our employees, changed the trajectory of this facility and led to this accomplishment today.' Original ‘Hamilton' Cast Will Reunite for 10th Anniversary at 2025 Tony Awards

To mark Hamilton's 10th anniversary, Lin-Manuel Miranda and the production's original cast will reunite at the Tony Awards. More than two dozen cast members — including Leslie Odom, Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, and Ariana DeBose — will participate. The Tony Awards will air live on CBS and Paramount+ at 8 p.m. ET on June 8. The producers have not yet revealed which song the cast, which includes 19 other actors, will perform. When it appeared at the 2016 Tonys, the Hamilton cast performed 'History Has Its Eyes on You' and 'Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down).' The actors closed out that year with 'The Schuyler Sisters.' 'Returning to Hamilton is a deeply meaningful homecoming,' Odom said. 'I'm so grateful for the chance to step back into the room — especially during this anniversary moment and to revisit this brilliant piece that forever changed my life and the lives of so many.' Hamilton opened on Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015, and quickly became a runaway hit. The musical won a Grammy and an Olivier, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 11 Tonys. The cast recording became the first Broadway album to be certified diamond by the RIAA. A film of the original cast's production, shot in 2016, is available to stream on Disney+. In 2020, Miranda reflected on the Hamilton phenomenon in an interview with Rolling Stone. When asked what his favorite part of the past decade was, he said, 'Honestly, it's the Hamilton wave that keeps cresting. I thought we'd do well with school groups [and] maybe run one or two years.
