Rookie receivers steal show in Chargers' preseason loss to Rams

Second-round pick Tre' Harris did not have a catch on two targets in the Chargers' first two games of the preseason. On Saturday, he broke out. Harris led the Chargers with six catches on eight targets for 85 yards, including a toe-tap deep-ball reception down the right sideline. Three of Harris' other catches went for third-down conversions.

Fifth-round pick KeAndre Lambert-Smith flashed with two catches for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Hall of Fame Game last month. Last week against the New Orleans Saints, Lambert-Smith did not have a catch on two targets. On Saturday, Lambert-Smith had two explosive catches, one for 37 yards and one for 29 yards, showing off his big-play potential. Like Harris, Lambert-Smith had a toe-tap deep-ball catch down the right sideline. The play displayed his best traits: speed, hands, ball tracking and body control.
Even undrafted rookie Luke Grimm got in on the action. Grimm returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter that put the Chargers ahead.
'All the receivers really did an outstanding job,' Harbaugh said.
Harris and Lambert-Smith stepped up after Quentin Johnston suffered a concussion on the opening drive of the game.
Harbaugh decided to play his starters, including quarterback Justin Herbert. On the third play, Johnston was open on a go route down the right sideline. Herbert's throw came in and glanced off Johnston's hands. It looked like Rams cornerback A.J. Green might have tipped the ball just before it reached Johnston. Safety Tanner Ingle then delivered a huge hit to Johnston, who was down after the play.
Johnston eventually stood up on his own, but he was carted off the field. Harbaugh said after the game that Johnston was transported to a hospital for further evaluation out of 'precaution.'

'Looked like it could have been a lot worse,' Harbaugh said. 'He was talking, he remembered the play, was moving good. So in that way, it's a good thing.'
The starters remained in to finish the drive, and it was Lambert-Smith — not Harris — who replaced Johnston as one of the outside receivers.
Herbert went right to Lambert-Smith on his first dropback after Johnston's injury. Lambert-Smith ran a corner route from the outside left of the formation. Herbert threw a perfect ball past cornerback Shaun Jolly.
'Even if I'm covered, always expect the ball from 10,' Lambert-Smith said. 'That was elite placement.'
Lambert-Smith said Herbert offered some encouragement in the huddle after the completion: 'More to come.'
'He let me know,' Lambert-Smith said. 'It felt a little good.'
Herbert went back to Lambert-Smith two plays later on a jump ball in the back right corner of the end zone. That one fell incomplete.
'It shouldn't be like a backup comes in,' Lambert-Smith said of working with the starters. 'We don't want nothing to slow down, and 10 showed me that off the rip by going at me twice.'
Harris said receivers coach Sanjay Lal challenged the rookie receivers Friday and then again during pregame Saturday.
'Just us being more intense in everything we do, whether it's run blocking, whether it's us going out and making catches,' Harris said. 'Go out there and have fun, first and foremost, and play with a certain amount of intensity to where it allows you to play freely. Have that controlled rage with each and every rep you do, and it's going to allow you to play with such confidence that I was able to display today.'

Harris said the rookies 'lacked' that intensity in the first two games.
'He's always digging for not just me or the rookies, he's digging for everybody to continue to get better,' Harris said of Lal. 'No matter if it's in the run game, no matter if it's at the top of the route, our release game, he's always looking for a way for us to get better, and that's something that I feel like definitely helped us today.'

Harris did not separate consistently in one-on-one situations in the first two games. He said Saturday that his focus heading into Saturday was 'being physically dominant.'
That was evident on some of his third-down reps. Harris won off the line of scrimmage on a third-and-6 in the second quarter, hauling in the catch from quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who replaced Herbert. In the third quarter, with Trey Lance at quarterback, Harris made a contested catch on a comeback route to the left on a third-and-8. Lance — who passed for 121 yards and rushed for 25 — threw with outstanding anticipation on the play.
Four plays later, Harris won off the line of scrimmage again on a slant, covering a third-and-9 from Lance.
His go-ball reception came on the same drive.
'I definitely think it added a little confidence,' Harris said of the performance.
Harris said Saturday was his dad's birthday and he was in attendance at SoFi Stadium.
'Shoutout to him,' Harris said. 'Glad he got to come out and see me do what I do best.'
According to Harris, Grimm has earned the nickname 'Grimm Reaper' in the Chargers receivers room. Last week, Grimm nearly broke off a long punt return against the Saints. He got tripped up just before finding daylight. This week, Grimm bounced to his left and surged to the end zone behind some excellent blocking.
'That's what Reap do,' Harris said.

Added Grimm, who missed practice time early in camp with an injury: 'Just prove your worth. … Whether it's kickoff, punt, punt return, kickoff return, front line, it doesn't matter. If I'm blocking or catching footballs, I just want to show that I can provide for this team and help us win games.'
The game ended sourly for the Chargers, as the Rams, led by quarterback Stetson Bennett IV, drove 75 yards on 10 plays for the winning touchdown. The Chargers gave up a 40-yard Hail Mary on a fourth-and-10 with 11 seconds remaining that set up the go-ahead score.

'It feels like regular season to me right now,' Harbaugh said moments after the loss.
It does not count in the standings.
What could count toward wins moving forward: Harris and Lambert-Smith making the types of plays they made Saturday.
'We're going to continue to grow together,' Lambert-Smith said.

3 Chargers players on the roster bubble who helped themselves vs. Rams
The Chargers lost to the Rams, 23-22, in their third preseason game. Despite the outcome, several players boosted their chances of earning a spot on the 53-man roster or practice squad with strong performances. Following the game, here's a look at which roster-bubble players helped their cause: WR Luke Grimm Backend of the roster spots can be won on special teams, and Grimm stood out in that department on Saturday. Grimm, the undrafted rookie out of Kansas, returned a punt for a 66-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Chargers a 22-17 lead. He almost had another punt return TD the weekend before against the Saints, but he was tripped up. It'll be a tall task to beat out WR Derius Davis for return duties, but plays like this could at least warrant a spot on the practice squad. DT TeRah Edwards Edwards might have had the best play of the preseason, as he picked off Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett and returned it 27 yards. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter dropped the former Illinois product into coverage. He secured the football into his chest and truck-sticked Bennett along the way before being brought down. Like Grimm, he will likely be a practice squad candidate. But plays like this will carry on with him forever. S Tony Jefferson Jefferson, the preseason MVP, finished with three tackles and a pass breakup at the goal line on a fourth-down play, which prevented a Rams touchdown. He also added a special teams tackle. Jefferson leans more toward a near-lock to make the roster, but RJ Mickens, the sixth-round pick, could fend him off if the Chargers choose to only carry four safeties on the initial 53-man roster.

Interview: Alperen Sengun on his offseason and the 2025-26 Rockets
In a Turkish interview published Sunday, reporters with Socrates Dergi spoke with Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun ahead of the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 competition. Now 23 years old, Sengun earned his first career NBA All-Star honors last season, and he's expected to have a key role on a Houston squad that enters 2025-26 with championship aspirations. 'The Turkish superstar first talks about All-Star weekend, his ongoing relationship with Fred VanVleet on and off the court, and Jalen Green's departure,' Socrates Dergi writes in its summary. 'Afterwards, he also shares his thoughts on Kevin Durant joining the team; the playoff series against Golden State Warriors; gaining playoff experience as a team; how the Rockets keep growing (their) physicality and its main figure, Amen Thompson; and Ime Udoka's coaching philosophy.' While spoken in Turkish, the interview contains English subtitles. Courtesy of @FranchiseSengun on X, here's a roundup of what Sengun had to say regarding the above topics and more. Sengun on Areas of Offseason Focus As you know, I sort of lost my touch this season. I focused on this a lot, my shots and finishing. Of course, my conditioning, as well. This helped me a lot last season in my defense and ability to play longer minutes. And finally, my shooting. Sengun on 'Double Big' Lineups When Ime Udoka introduced the double big lineup, it made my job a lot easier. Having to constantly be physical with the opposing center on defense, and then switching to offense, became very tiring. [With the double big] my performance increased, and I had more energy on both ends. Sengun on Relationship with Fred VanVleet Fred has been an incredible leader since he first joined the team. He does a lot you don't see on the court. Controlling and leading the team is not easy, and he also does this when he's not playing. In my opinion, there is not a single point guard like Fred in the league. Nowadays, point guards are focused on getting their shots. Fred is not like that. He sees the potential in me. Fred [and Ime] get mad and argue with me time to time, but it doesn't last long. He's always in my ear. Sengun on the Jalen Green Trade Of course it was upsetting — Jalen was like my brother. Jalen comes off as a very cool kid, of course. But when you get to know him, he's super kind, he's always helpful. Some players, they try to act 'cool' around their teammates, but Jalen wasn't like that. I think Jalen is going to be a big player. I told him, 'I hope this makes you more motivated.' Sometimes he battles with himself, I think he will become more mature and no longer do this. Sengun on Kevin Durant I reached out to Kevin and told him I'm excited to work together. He said, 'We're going to have fun and do a lot of great things.' Last season I told him one game, 'Don't come to double me, let me play one one one.' He said, 'No way, you're an All-Star now. You're no longer going to play one-on-one. Get used to it.' Sengun on Steven Adams The day he (was traded for), I directly called Ime Udoka and Rafael Stone and told them, 'Normally, when a team signs a center of Steven Adams quality as a backup, they wouldn't be happy.' But I was extremely happy. Steven's main focus is for us to get better. For example, he sometimes lets me get shots off to raise my confidence. He doesn't care about losing [in practice]. He's a great veteran. I'm sure he does, but I've never seen Steven Adams lift weights. He has his own unique workouts. He spends a lot of time stretching There was one workout where my only job was to box him out. I bear hugged him so he can't get the rebound, he lifted his arms, and I thought my shoulders were going to pop off. Sengun on 2025 Playoffs The Warriors were probably the one team that would have gave us the most trouble, and we drew them. They're a very experienced team, and they fouled a lot. In the playoffs, they don't call it. But they were the ones crying all series about fouls not being called. When it comes to us, we're not really allowed to complain. It's more of an internal thing. Ime Udoka doesn't allow it. He loses his mind if we complain. Sengun on Playing Against Draymond Green Never in my life has something like this scared me. If anything, it makes me angry. Sengun on Amen Thompson Amen is an incredible athlete. There is seriously nothing else like this Amen is very hardworking. As you know, in the NBA there is other things like 'fit' [clothing] culture. Amen is strictly basketball. He works hard in practice, takes his recovery seriously He makes the most of his God-given athleticism. Sengun on Thompson's Injury There was one game, Amen needed an an assist or something to get his trouble-double. Normally, Ime Udoka doesn't leave you in the game if there is a big score difference. There were countless times he didn't put me back in the game when I was close. But that game, Udoka let him play, and Amen twisted his ankle. After that I joked saying 'Amen, you ruined it for all of us. Now Udoka will never let me continue to play [to get a triple double].' Sengun on 2025-26 Season There will be a lot of pressure this year, but I think the entire team has the strength to handle it. We are now like soldiers — Ime and his soldiers. I think everyone is extremely focused and working hard. I hope we will live this excitement, and will allow others to feel the same excitement. Sengun on the Western Conference The West is dangerous. You can say there is no bad team. But this is also good for us... it will get us ready for the playoffs. You play more focused against better teams. Sengun on All-Star Honors It was great being with the other stars, to get to know them. It was upsetting not to be selected for All-NBA. This was one of my goals. But these sort of things motivate me. So this season, my goal will be to be All-NBA and become a champion. Even if I don't become All-NBA, as long as the team is successful [that is what matters]. Sengun on Winning a Title in Houston The complete interview can be viewed below (Turkish with English subtitles).
