Gurgaon's buzzing ‘Bengali Market' empties out

Time of India24-07-2025
Gurgaon: The narrow lanes of Bengali Market near South City, once bustling with life and commerce, now echo with an eerie silence. In less than a week, an estimated 4,000 residents — many who had called this place a home for decades — have vanished, leaving behind their livelihoods and dreams.
The exodus began after cops in plainclothes detained some 25 men in a sudden raid to identify Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingya living illegally here.
What followed was a wave of fear and uncertainty that emptied this vibrant settlement — home to drivers, maids, fish sellers, and cooks mainly from West Bengal.

"We are people who work to eat. What will we do back home? We can't do farming. It will be very difficult for us to go back and start a life again," said Mohammed Zulfiqar Ali, a driver who has lived in the NCR city for 25 years.
His story mirrors that of thousands of others who built their lives here, with children enrolled in local schools and steady jobs supporting their families.
Residents alleged that police conducted arbitrary detentions without any proper verification. "They don't ask for IDs. They just pick us up and start beating," said Beauty, a resident for 14 years. She alleged that her teenaged nephew was so severely beaten up that "he cannot even walk".

He has since gone back to Bengal.
Over the past few days, nearly 250 people have been detained across the city, with four community centres converted into holding facilities in Badshapur, Sector 10A, Sector 40, and Manesar.
"When they asked us to show IDs, we did so. But they just said, 'Brother, just sit in the car and we'll go'," said Mohammed Zulfiqar Ali.
While some were released from the detention centres in 5-6 hours, others returned home after a day.
But those detained alleged torture and humiliation. "His whole skin peeled off," a resident claimed about a neighbour.
The fear, Zulfiqar claimed, was so profound that he deleted video evidence of the beatings from his phone, fearing further repercussions.
The sudden displacement has created a financial crisis for many. With monthly rents in the city between Rs 3,000 and Rs 7,000, and no savings or employment prospects in their villages back home, families face an uncertain future.
"We can feed our children in our villages, but we cannot build their future," said a woman, referring to limited educational opportunities in rural areas. "We don't have anything at home. We earn here, eat, and just pass our days, educating our children a little," she added.
While some, like Abhi Rahman, a tea shop owner for nine years, plan to return "when things are settled", most see no immediate hope of coming back. The holding centres currently house hundreds of people, mainly ragpickers employed by sanitation contractors, as authorities verify their documentation.

No poor family in Haryana will stay homeless: Saini

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini Monday handed over 'interim' ownership certificates under the Mukhyamantri Shehri Awas Yojana and plot allotment letters under the Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas Yojana 2.0 to hundreds of beneficiaries. Speaking at the state-level function in Panchkula, Saini said, 'No poor family in Haryana will remain homeless. About 1,144 beneficiaries in Sector-23, Jagadhri received interim ownership certificates under Mukhyamantri Shehri Awas Yojana, while 3,884 rural beneficiaries received plot allotment letters across 58 villages under the Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas Yojana 2.0.' The CM added that beneficiaries were identified in a transparent manner. 'No favoritism, no recommendations were made, just need-based assistance was provided. It is a milestone in transparent and accountable governance. No irregularities or corruption were allowed in the implementation process. All data and procedures have been kept digital and transparent, and beneficiaries were selected entirely on merit'. Highlighting the role of a double-engine BJP government, Saini added, 'We have kept our promise, land has been provided, and financial assistance has been extended for house construction. This has only been possible due to strong coordination between the Centre and the State'. Sharing the key achievements of his government, the CM said, 'Under the first phase of the Mukhyamantri Shehri Awas Yojana, 15,256 families in 14 cities were already allotted 30-square-yard plots. A Rs 2.5 lakh subsidy per household is being provided under PMAY–Urban 2.0 for house construction. Besides this, in rural areas, under Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas Yojana–2.0, the process to allot plots to 1.58 lakh applicants in 561 villages is underway. Furthermore, Rural beneficiaries will receive Rs 1.38 lakh under PMAY–Gramin, Rs 12,000 for toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission, and 90 days of unskilled labour wages under MGNREGA.' 'Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, so far, 69,150 houses have been built in rural areas with Rs 579 crore in assistance, while 77,900 houses have been constructed in urban areas under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Shehri with Rs.1,650 crore support,' Saini said. Taking a dig at the Congress, Saini said that even after being in power for 55 years, the party failed to bring real change for the poor. 'In the past, Congress promised plots to poor families but failed to provide proper documents or possession,' he said, adding, 'Before 2014, rural households did not even have access to LPG gas cylinders but Haryana is now providing gas cylinders to poor families for Rs 500.' Talking about the healthcare in Haryana, Saini said, 'The 'Ayushman Bharat Yojana' and 'Chirayu Haryana scheme' are now providing free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh. So far, 22 lakh people in Haryana have benefitted, and Rs 2,500 crore has been spent on treatment.' Further refuting opposition's accusations on exorbitant collector rate hike, Saini reiterated, 'Some opposition leaders are claiming that the government is collecting Rs 5,000 crore in the name of collector rates. The truth is, in over 80 per cent of areas in Haryana, rates have increased by only 10 per cent. There is a process for this, under which the collector rate is renewed every year considering the highest registry as the basis. Spreading such lies is irresponsible.'

‘Satan 2' Missile: Russia's RS-28 Sarmat can hit target anywhere in the world, capable of causing massive destruction in seconds, US, China worried due to…

A recent war of words between US President Donald Trump and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has once again raised military tensions between the United States and Russia. In response, Russia has shown off one of its most powerful and feared weapons i.e. the RS-28 Sarmat, a long-range nuclear missile. NATO has nicknamed it 'Satan 2' because of its massive destructive power. As the US moves two nuclear submarines closer to Russian waters, Russia is hitting back by highlighting this missile, which it claims can get past any Western missile defence system. Russian President Vladimir Putin considers the RS-28 an important part of the country's nuclear defense strategy. According to Russian officials, this missile can go farther and hit harder than any missile the US or China currently has. They also say it can make existing Western defence systems useless, raising fears that a new global arms race might be starting.

IITian earned big, saved nothing: Reddit post reveals how JEE topper's parents used 'love' to take every rupee

Synopsis A young Indian software professional shared his experience on Reddit about financial abuse by his parents. Despite earning a high salary after graduating from a top institute, his parents demanded a significant portion of his income under the guise of family duty and future investments, leaving him with no savings or financial independence. Representative image generated using AI On Reddit, stories of bad bosses and flatmate horror tales are common, but every now and then, a post comes along that truly stops people in their tracks. That's what happened when a young Indian software professional opened up about something rarely discussed in public: financial abuse within a heartfelt post, the techie described how his parents, under the pretext of love, care, and duty, stripped him of financial independence, one pay cheque at a time. Despite studying at one of India's top institutes and landing a high-paying job straight out of college, he said he was left with no savings, no investments, and no control over his own money. The reason? Parental pressure disguised as emotional to his Reddit post, the young man had a tough childhood in an emotionally abusive home, particularly due to his father's behaviour. Still, he worked hard, cleared the highly competitive JEE, and secured a seat at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). However, instead of supporting his education, his father allegedly made him take out an education loan of Rs 11 lakh, even though the family had enough didn't get better even when he started earning. During his final year, he landed a 10-month internship paying Rs 80,000 per month. But he claimed his father demanded the entire amount each month, saying it would be saved for a future home. Instead of using this money to repay his loan, the young student was left with nothing to call his graduation, he bagged a full-time role with a salary of Rs 1.5 lakh a month. But his financial freedom never came. His parents allegedly asked for Rs 1.1 lakh every month, again under the promise that it was going toward the family's future investments. In just over a year, he said he handed over nearly all his income, with no savings to show for it. When the job shifted to remote mode during the pandemic, he returned home, but this only led to more stress and a fallout with his parents. He moved out again after a months later, his parents informed him that they were buying a new flat. Though they avoided talking about money at first, the pressure soon returned. He said he had already given them over Rs 20 lakh for the down payment. When he delayed further contributions, emotional blackmail began. They reminded him of how they had 'sacrificed everything' to raise and educate him, even though he claimed his schooling from grades 9 to 12 cost less than Rs 2 lakh in total. His father, a government employee, reportedly earns around Rs 1 lakh per breaking point came when he visited home after more than a year. During a casual chat, his father asked how much he had in his bank account, and then requested another Rs 2 lakh for furniture. He even suggested that the son should allow his parents to 'manage' his finances going forward. That was the moment the young man decided to walk in his mid-20s, he has chosen to stop all financial support to his parents, saying they are fully capable of looking after themselves. His story has sparked conversations online about how love and duty are sometimes twisted into tools of control, especially within families where financial discussions are taboo.
