Ford readies for the impact of tariffs, suspends 2025 financial guidance
While Ford Motor Company said its first quarter financial picture was better than expected, Trump tariffs will likely make 2025 difficult.

Hundreds of thousands of Toyota and Ford vehicles were recalled earlier in May, which means the cars may need to undergo repairs soon.
According to recall notices from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 400,000 Toyota vehicles and over 1 million Ford vehicles could have visibility issues due to respective light and camera issues.
Some Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks were recalled over reverse lighting failures that may impact visibility, according to the May 19 notice.
Several Ford models, including Bronco, Edge and Expedition, may have frozen or missing rearview camera images, the May 9 recall notice says.
Both recall issues impact the drivers' views from the vehicles, increasing the risk of crash, according to NHTSA.

How to check if your call is recalled
Both the NHTSA recall database and USA TODAY's recall database for car and motor vehicle recalls are regularly updated with the latest status on vehicles, car parts or car accessories.
To check if your car has been affected, car owners can either search their car's make or model in USA TODAY's recall database or look it up on NHTSA's website.
The NHTSA website also has a feature that allows you to search directly using your vehicle's license plate number or vehicle identification number. The site also provides information about recalled car seats, tires and other equipment.

What to do if your car has been recalled
Drivers who own the models mentioned in the recalls can take their vehicles to either a Ford or Toyota dealer to have repairs done for free.
Toyota said it expects to mail owner notification letters on June 30. Owners can also contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 with recall numbers 24TB06 and 24TA06.
Ford said it will begin mailing letters to car owners on June 16. The company said a second letter will be sent once a solution is available — most likely during the third quarter of 2025. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and mention recall number 25S49.

The rest of it Fuel economy was disappointing considering the amount of time spent on the highway. On this trip, we achieved the best average to date: 19.7 mpg. Remember, the GX is rated at 17 mpg combined (15 city/21 highway). The turning radius was amazing. I could flip a U-turn on most residential streets in my area. This must help a lot with maneuvering off-road, but I kept on pavement this time. That said, our team will be sure to bring the Overtail off-road over the course of our yearlong test. The pop-out cargo area window was a feature I didn't realize I needed until I had it. Three one-gallon jugs of water got pinned against the cargo hatch door when I wasn't looking. Had I not opened the window first for a peek, it could've been trouble when I opened the hatch door. I should add that at 6 feet tall, the window is a perfect height for me. I could see it being less useful for shorter humans. Finally, two oddities. First, I was in a drive-thru and the front proximity sensor chimed an alert, then stopped, then repeated five or six times. The distance shouldn't have triggered the sensor to begin with, and considering that the car was stationary during the freakout left me scratching my head. Second, there was a water drainage quirk. The GX roof drainage rail lines up in such a way that, when I opened the rear door and reached inside, a stream of cold morning dew dripped down the back of my neck. When I wasn't blocking its path, the water flowed right onto the carpet. That shouldn't happen.

Trump decision leaves Elon Musk in a serious bind
Fresh off of his recent departure from the White House, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave CBS News an exclusive interview over the weekend. He sported the same blackened right eye he had in the White House when President Donald Trump thanked him for his work with the Department of Government Efficiency on his way out the door. Musk is returning to work full time at Tesla, leaving the side quest he has been on since January as the head of DOGE. Related: Elon Musk explains DOGE mission, takes shot at government While Trump was effusive in his praise of his efforts, Musk's time in Washington was, at times, incredibly rocky. While DOGE wasn't able to deliver on the cuts he initially promised, the work of non-government governmental agencies to root out fraud, waste, and abuse will continue as long as the president wishes it to. DOGE expects to cut at least $150 billion by 2026. A couple of Trump's policies run counter to Elon Musk's own best interests, and Musk has had to learn an old Washington, D.C. maxim about toeing the party line. Automotive and automotive parts tariffs directly affect Tesla's bottom line, and as a political neophyte, Musk originally addressed them the best way he knows how: on X. Musk went after Trump advisor Peter Navarro, who returned fire on cable television. Before the weekend was over, the two men had a full-blown war of words, with Trump taking Navarro's side. This was Musk's first public spat with the administration, and for a while, Musk didn't mention any of the administration's policies he'd disagreed with in the past. Although Musk entered the U.S. on a J-1 visa, which is often given to foreign nationals looking to further their studies in the States, he has been silent regarding Trump's attack on international students seeking to enter the country. But as his time in Washington has concluded, he has become slightly more vocal on some issues. Last week, he criticized the Republican spending bill making its way through Congress. I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don't know if it could be both," Musk said. "It's not like I agree with everything the administration does...I mean, I agree with much of what the administration does, but we have differences of opinion on the things that I don't entirely agree with," he said in an interview with CBS News. "But it's difficult for me to bring that up in an interview, because it creates a buildup of tension. So I'm stuck in a bind where I don't want to speak up against the administration, but I also don't want to take responsibility for everything the administration is doing." A month ago, Tesla reported one of its worst quarters on record. The company reported a 9% decline in first-quarter revenue to $19.3 billion, missing analyst estimates by $2 billion. Earnings of 27 cents per share fell short of Wall Street expectations by 34%. One of the issues during the period was cratering demand in Europe. While only a small percentage of sales were made in Europe, it was a challenging region in the quarter. Sales in Germany reportedly fell 62%, and numbers in Norway, the UK, and France weren't much better. Just this week, it was reported that Tesla's European sales dropped another 49% in April to 7,261, despite overall EV sales rising 34% in the region during the month, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Musk has admitted that his political activism has turned some people off from his products. But he also says that his activism has garnered him even more new fans from the opposite end of the political spectrum. He recently spoke at the Qatar Economic Forum, saying that any politically left-leaning buyers who abandoned the company have been replaced by people who align more with his politics. He punctuated his point by emphasizing that Tesla has no problem with demand. Auto sales see 'return to normal' while trying to shake off tariffs
While Ford (F) posted a 16% year-over-year increase in May auto sales — bolstered by employee pricing discounts — how have other automakers been trying to get ahead of tariff impacts? CarGurus director of economic and market intelligence Kevin Roberts joins Asking for a Trend's Josh Lipton to talk more about auto price forecasts as car brands navigate President Trump's tariff policies and proposals to tax steel imports. Well, automakers led by Ford saw big sales gains in May, as price cuts and shedding inventories blunted the effect of President Trump's auto tariffs. For more on the latest numbers and the state of the auto industry, let's welcome in here Kevin Roberts, Car Gurus's director of economic and market intelligence. Kevin, always good to see you. So, auto sales for May, Kevin, just looking, I mean, nice sales gains. I'm looking at Ford sales jumped about 16%, Kevin. Truck sales, strong, hybrid strong, EV not great. Toyota looks like an increase about 7% in May. We heard from Hyundai and Kia as well. Just broadly, when you looked over that data, Kevin, how would you characterize it? What would you make of it? Yeah, it was, uh, I would say a return to normal. So, uh, I like to say end of March, early April was kind of a crazy time for the auto industry when the tariffs were first announced. May was a little bit more back to normal, uh, traditionally a really strong kind of sales month for the industry. Um, you know, end of tax season, we have, uh, Memorial Day sales. So that's been really kind of helpful for the industry. And you mentioned it, several automakers really had some strong months. Couple things I think really kind of helped there. Ford had their employee pricing for all, uh, you know, vehicle affordability has been a trend we've really been highlighting for a while now. So I think that kind of discounts really kind of helped drive sales there. And then you mentioned hybrids. That's one that helped for both Ford and Toyota. Um, hybrid sales continue to see really strong growth. Consumers really like hybrids, and Ford and particularly Toyota are really dominant in hybrid power trains, which is helping to drive sales. Do you think we saw some pull forward in those numbers too, though, Kevin? You know, folks trying to get ahead of tariffs? That is the million dollar question for the auto industry right now. Uh, how much, if if we did see pull ahead, how much did we see pull ahead? And where might that start to bite back? Um, you know, was that kind of Q2 sales towards the end of the quarter that we pulled that from, or was it later in the year? It's really an unknown at this point. Uh, did we just kind of shake people off the sidelines who, you know, weren't in the market, or did we kind of pull ahead a lot of volume, uh, in those kind of crazy weeks after the tariffs were announced? And it's, it's, it's a major unknown for the industry right now. Kevin, you know, tariffs in place. So do you think these automakers, do they maintain pricing, Kevin, or would you expect, no, starting here in June, perhaps, we're, we're going to see prices start rising? Yeah, so we've been monitoring what's been happening to the average list price of vehicles on the site. Uh, somewhat surprising, we haven't seen large shifts, uh, to this point. However, like you said, a lot of automakers I think we're kind of in a wait and see approach after the tariffs were announced. And we're starting to see a trickle of some announcements of, uh, price increases as we get into June. Uh, and that's going to be a trend we kind of monitor, um, to see if that continues and if we start to see some of that expected price inflation, uh, for vehicles as we move into the second half of the year. What did you make of the reaction in some names, um, this week, Kevin, for GM, for example, moving lower as Trump talked tough on steel tariffs? Yeah, so it, it's a little bit of a different situation than if we would have talked a month or two ago. Uh, we had another executive order signed towards the end of April, uh, which gave hierarchy to stop stacking of a number of tariffs. And so that should stop, um, section 232 auto tariffs from being stacked with those steel and aluminum tariffs. So there is some protection for the auto industry. Now, it's important to keep in mind that those, that kind of protection only exists for, uh, finished vehicles and parts covered in those tariffs specifically. So for parts not covered there, we could see an impact there. And I think that's what you, that, uh, uh, that kind of risk is where you're seeing that shift this week. By the way, should kind of just see a breaking news headline here. Uh, according to the White House, UK steel tariffs, they're going to remain at 25% for now. Um, lastly, Kevin, on Tesla, I want your views there. There, we did get some numbers this week. Broadly, weak sales for Tesla in Europe. What do you make of that, Kevin? Is that branding? Is that, you know, the Model Y change over? Is that more competition for Musk over there? Is it all three? So, uh, we, Tesla is a direct to consumer automaker, so we don't get their data in, in our listing data, so a little bit difficult to say there. What I can say from the used side of the market, even with all the noise around Tesla recently, still, uh, still seems pretty strong, uh, demand for used Teslas out in the marketplace. So can't, can't comment as much on the new side of the market, but used side still sees, uh, uh, strong interest for used Teslas. Interesting. Kevin, always great to have you on the show.
