Scam alert: Toll texts target North Carolina drivers
Don't click on links in text messages claiming to be from NC Quick Pass or any other tolling agencies, as they may be part of a nationwide scam.
Why it matters: The messages are fraudulent and sent at random, including to non-toll users, North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson said.
Clicking on links included in the messages — many of which closely mimic legitimate tolling agency sites — could subject you to financial fraud.
The big picture: The messages are known as smishing, or Short Message Service (SMS) phishing. The sender disguises themselves as E-ZPass or a state tollway operator claiming the recipient has an unpaid toll.
The goal is to get victims to pay the fraudster or share their sensitive information, like driver's license, Social Security or bank account numbers, Axios Phoenix's Jessica Boehm writes.
Driving the news: NC Quick Pass has received thousands of phone calls daily asking about the legitimacy of text messages that accuse recipients of "toll evasion" or claim that you'll be subject to a penalty or "legal action" if you fail to pay.
What they're saying:"These scam texts are targeting a massive number of people—including me," Jackson said in an announcement last month.
"Don't fall for them, and please warn your family. We're investigating, but in the meantime, be wary of any unsolicited texts — especially those that claim to be from the government or threaten legal action."
How it works: NC Quick Pass will not ask for payment via text message or threaten you with legal action for an outstanding balance, Jackson said.

Dad Accused of Killing His 3 Daughters Had Chilling Online Searches

After Washington state resident Travis Decker was charged with the murders of his daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, a U.S. Marshals Service affidavit, obtained by NBC News, reveals that he had suspicious searches on his Google account. 'These Google searches included the following: 'how does a person move to canada,' 'how to relocate to canada,' 'jobs canada' and 'jobs canada,'' US Deputy Marshal Keegan Stanley wrote in the June 6 affidavit, per NBC. 'After the above-listed Google searches, he visited the site 'Find a job - A manhunt is currently underway for Decker, 32, who has not been seen since his daughters were found dead with plastic bags over their heads in Chelan County, Washington near his abandoned truck June 2. 'Decker is currently wanted for three counts of Murder first degree and Kidnapping first degree,' a June 2 statement from the Wenatchee police read. 'Additional law enforcement officers responded and searched the immediate area. During the search, the bodies of the three missing girls were discovered.' More from E! The former couple, Cozart noted, had been divorced for many years but maintained a friendly relationship as co-parents. During the hand-off, Cozart explained that Decker told his ex-wife he would bring their daughters back to her at 8 p.m. that day, as their custody agreement did not allow for overnight visits. When Decker did not show up at the allotted time, Whitney became worried and called him—but his phone went straight to voicemail. She called authorities later that night, according to an affidavit obtained by NBC News. Cozart told CNN that Decker had struggled with mental health issues, but said, 'He never displayed any sort of 'red flags' to Whitney." In an affidavit obtained by NBC News, Decker is described as a military veteran who is 'well versed in wilderness survival and capable of spending days or even weeks in the wilderness on his own and with very little equipment.' Sean "Diddy" Combs Trial Week 5: Defense Requests Second Mistrial

The 19th day of the rap mogul's sex trafficking trial resumed June 9 following his defense team's second request for a mistrial, according to NBC News reporters in the courtroom. Over the weekend, attorney Alexandra Shapiro filed a motion viewed by E! News, in which she argued that his ex Cassie Ventura and her friend Bryana Bongolan of lying about the latter being dangled from a 17th-floor balcony in 2016 by Combs. His defense team—whose first motion was denied by Judge Arun Subramanian May 28—accused the prosecution of 'misconduct' with the 'introduction of perjured testimony.' The prosecution will respond to the motion and the judge is set to respond June 10. As the jury awaits the decision, Combs' ex—who is going by 'Jane' during the trial and was identified as 'Victim-2' in the indictment—has returned to the witness box following an emotional testimony about alleged abuse in their relationship. Do you need, like, three more months in the house? Because I'm not about to be paying for a woman's rent that I'm not even seeing.'' You may have missed it, but on Friday, the Supreme Court lifted a lower court order that blocked the Department of Government Efficiency from accessing the Social Security Administration's data systems. Since Social Security tracks data from cradle to grave, here is just some of the information DOGE will now have access to: your name, Social Security number, date and place of birth, gender, addresses, marital and parental status, your parents' names, lifetime earnings, bank account information, immigration and work authorization status, health conditions if you apply for disability benefits, and your use of Medicare after a certain age. Protests against President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown have rocked Los Angeles, prompting the LAPD to declare all of downtown an unlawful assembly area. Demonstrations in and around the nation's second-most populous city began on Friday and continued throughout the weekend. Although law enforcement officers in riot gear had already used flash-bangs to disperse crowds while making arrests, Trump announced on Saturday that he was deploying 2,000 members of the National Guard.
