Farhan Akhtar Recalls Emotional Meeting Between Milkha Singh And Fauja Singh: 'He Hugged Him'
As Bhaag Milkha Bhaag gears up for its theatrical re-release on August 8, 2025, actor Farhan Akhtar and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra are revisiting some of the most emotional and defining moments connected to the film—including a heartwarming encounter with another legendary athlete, the late Fauja Singh.
Fauja Singh, often dubbed the 'Turbaned Tornado," passed away on July 14 in a tragic hit-and-run accident in his birthplace, Bias Pind near Jalandhar, at the age of 114. A global icon and the world's oldest British-Indian marathon runner, Singh's untimely death has cast a sombre shadow over the celebrations surrounding Bhaag Milkha Bhaag's re-release.
Speaking to NDTV, Farhan Akhtar expressed deep grief over Singh's passing. 'Yes, Fauja Singh was here in London. I remember meeting him. However, at that time, all of us were so caught up in the Bhaag Milkha Bhaag promotional junket that we didn't have the opportunity to spend much time with him. But I'm, of course, very familiar with him. I'm familiar with all his achievements. It is truly tragic how he died."
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra vividly recalled the emotional meeting between Fauja Singh and Milkha Singh at the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Southall, London, in July 2013. 'We went to South London. We were at the gurdwara, where we offered our prayers, and Fauja Singh was also there. Milkha Sir and he hugged each other. It was so great to see them like that. Unfortunately, he died in an accident. He would have lived forever. It's just sad the way life took him away from us."
Fauja Singh's death occurred when he was struck by a speeding vehicle while crossing a road in his village. He sustained a severe head injury and succumbed to it during treatment. Punjab Police acted swiftly, arresting the driver, Canada-based Amritpal Singh Dhillon, within 30 hours. Harvinder Singh Virk, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar Rural, confirmed the arrest and praised the investigative team.
The chance meeting between Milkha Singh and Fauja Singh, two titans of Indian athleticism, now carries even deeper significance. Their embrace at the gurdwara remains etched in the memories of those who witnessed it—a symbol of mutual respect, shared legacy, and unyielding spirit.
With Bhaag Milkha Bhaag returning to the big screen, audiences will be reminded not only of Milkha Singh's inspiring journey from refugee to Olympian but also of the quiet strength of another Sikh icon who defied age and limits. As Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra put it, 'He would have lived forever. It's just sad the way life took him away from us."

Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor's ancestral homes to turn into museums
In Pakistan's Peshawar city, officials have stated that the restoration and repair of the ancestral homes of renowned Indian actors Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor has begun on Monday. According to Dr. Abdus Samad, Director of Archaeology, the project is expected to be finished in two years at a cost of ₹70 million. Capital released to restore the aesthetics of these historic homes Funds for the project, which includes restoring the historic homes' strength and aesthetic appeal, have been provided by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. The work, which aims to return the buildings to their original state, has been assigned to the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums. Both buildings will be transformed into museums honoring the lives and careers of the renowned actors by the provincial Archaeology Department. On July 13, 2014, Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan at the time, designated these homes as a national heritage site. The ancestral residences of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor are situated in the ancient Qissa Khwani Bazaar in Peshawar, Pakistan. Constructed in the early 1900s, these iconic buildings recall the style of colonial architecture and have a strong connection to the early years of the renowned Bollywood actors. While India remembers Dilip Kumar as one of the best actors that India has ever seen, Kapoor is called the 'Showman'. Recently, Kapoor's 100th birth anniversary was also celebrated in the country where many of his iconic movies were re-released. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also spoken about this grand occasion and said, "Raj Kapoor's 100th birthday is an important milestone of India cinema's golden journey. It began with 1947's 'Neel Kamal' and we are on course to 2047. It is such a contribution to the country when we look back at this journey of 100 years," PM Modi said.

Saiyaara Box Office Day 11: Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda Film Crosses Rs 250 Cr Mark In India
Last Updated: Saiyaara collected Rs 9.50 crore on second Monday, crossing Rs 250 crore in India and Rs 300 crore globally. Netflix release expected around Diwali. Mohit Suri's Saiyaara continues to impress at the box office, defying expectations with each passing day. The romantic musical drama starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda minted Rs 9.50 crore on its second Monday, as per early estimates by Sacnilk. While this reflects a drop from the weekend numbers, the film is still holding strong, especially considering it has no big stars backing it. With this, Saiyaara has officially crossed Rs 250 crore net in India and over Rs 300 crore worldwide—making it one of the biggest sleeper hits of 2025. The film is now eyeing the Rs 275 crore mark domestically by the end of its second week. Directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Yash Raj Films, Saiyaara has been lauded for its emotional storytelling, fresh casting, and soul-stirring soundtrack. It marks Ahaan Panday's acting debut and has also given a massive career boost to actress Aneet Padda. The film also stars Rajesh Kumar, Varun Badola, Alam Khan, Sid Makkar, and Shaan Groverr in supporting roles. According to a report by The Times of India, the makers have closed a deal with Netflix for the OTT release of Saiyaara. However, given its continued box office success, the film's digital debut has now been pushed closer to Diwali. This move is expected to give the film an extended shelf life and cater to festive viewers at home. Released on July 18, 2025, Saiyaara is loosely inspired by the 2004 Korean romantic drama A Moment to Remember. The film follows Krish Kapoor, a disillusioned musician who crosses paths with the introspective poet Vaani Batra. Together, they navigate love, loss, and healing in a story that has struck an emotional chord with audiences. From strong word-of-mouth to chart-topping songs, Saiyaara has become a shining example of how content-driven cinema can still draw crowds in a star-driven industry. Divya, the girl who could become the queen
The little girl was dressed in a pink frock and a pinker overcoat. 'Divya Deshmukh,' she said when one asked her what her name was, on that November afternoon at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The year was 2013. She had just won the National Under-9 girls' chess championship, which was held as one of the side-events of the World championship match between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen at Hyatt Regency. How time flies! Divya is now one of the most exciting young talents in international women's chess. The latest proof came on Monday, at Batumi in Georgia, where she became the first Indian woman to win the chess World Cup. In an all-Indian final, she defeated the much more experienced, higher-rated Koneru Humpy. After both the classical games had been drawn, the title had to be decided in tiebreaker games, played with shorter time controls. The first game was drawn in 81 moves. Divya had white pieces, and she ensured half-a-point through perpetual checks with her queen. The second game, in which Divya was black, was wilder, with both players making significant mistakes. On the 42nd move, an unwise pawn-push down the centre by Humpy had given the younger woman a clear advantage. But Divya returned the compliment just a move later, going for a pawn-exchange, instead of which she should have played her rook on the back rank. And now it looked the point in the second game too would be shared, in an equal rook-and-pawn ending. On the 54th move, however, Humpy went for a pawn-capture with her rook, and black got the advantage back But, Divya failed to capitalise yet again. Humpy's 69th move, with her pawn on the king-side, proved fatal, though. This time, Divya, made no mistake. When black's extra pawn reached the penultimate rank, threatening to turn into a queen, Humpy extended her hand, and conceded defeat. It was a significant moment for Indian chess. Here was the undisputed queen congratulating the princess who could one day become the queen. Divya's right hand went towards her face, and there would be tears of joy. She, however, forced a smile as FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich came up to her and congratulated her. A little later, all her pent-up tears came out, as did her mother's. Namrata had sacrificed her career as a gynaecologist for the sake of her daughter's career. It hasn't been easy for the family, with Divya not having a sponsor, and chess, contrary to popular notion, is an expensive sport, as you need to travel around the world and quality coaches do not come cheap. The prize-money from the World Cup should come in handy: she has become richer by $50,000. That isn't the only thing that should make her smile. By winning the World Cup, she became India's 88th Grandmaster, and only the fourth woman from the country to do so. She, along with Humpy, also qualified for the Candidates tournament. This was very much a World Cup to remember for India's women.
