Match report: Watford Under-21s concede twice late in 3-3 draw at Sheffield Wednesday
Alexander Asaba scored both late goals for the hosts to deny the Hornets after they had opened up a convincing lead.
Wednesday did score first, Donald Kamwa finding the back of the net, but the advantage did not last long.
Amin Nabizada drew the Hornets level just after the hour mark, beating his man and dispatching an effort with his left foot.
By half-time, Watford were 3-1 up.
Travis Akomeah scored the first, knocking the ball into the net after home keeper Logan Stretch dropped a cross.
And Jack Grieves was next to score, finishing off a smart move just before the break.
Watford looked set to see out the victory, but Asaba pulled one back from close range with nine minutes to play.
And deep into added time Asaba was at it again, concerting a deflected cross.
The Under-21s are next in action against Hull City at Vicarage Road on Friday.
Watford: Macaulay; Eames, Akomeah, Mullins, Kamga (Hunt 64); Sanghrajka (J.Moulton 83), Shevchenko (Lwason 73), Grieves (Keyes 73); Okosun, Nabizada (Smith 83), R.Moulton

Collingwood coach's sad confession about Bobby Hill as fellow Pies star returns
Collingwood coach Craig McRae has admitted time is running out for Bobby Hill to play again this season, but the Magpies will be boosted by the return of Jeremy Howe against Melbourne on Friday night. Hill is a premiership player and Norm Smith Medal winner, but has only made one senior appearance in the past two months as he deals with personal issues. The 25-year-old flew to Adelaide last week to be around his teammates for their trip to face the Crows, however he didn't play. He also didn't train this week and won't play against the Demons at the MCG on Friday night. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, McRae said he had dinner with Hill on Tuesday and is focusing on the small forward's welfare rather than a potential return. McRae said Hill asked him to leave the door ajar for a possible return in September, but the 25-year-old is an unlikely participant in the Pies' finals campaign. "There's high performance and there's love and care, and I've just sort of left the high performance for now and I'm just making sure the young lad's OK," McRae said. "Time's running out in the season and maybe the high performance might be a bit far at the moment, but we'll just take that off the table for now. Hopefully he can get back in the club and be happy, and then we'll see where we go from there." RELATED: Wanganeen-Milera could be forced to take pay-cut as Hird floats theory Family dilemma as Geelong premiership hero on cusp of changing clubs McRae specifically asked Hill what to tell the media when inevitable questions arose as to his absence. "He goes, 'Please just leave a little bit of hope there for me'," McRae said. "But he's well aware that time's running out for getting enough load and then to be available. I stepped straight back into love and care and said, 'Nah, let's just get him right day by day'." Teammate Brayden Maynard said on Monday: "We are a lot better team with him, so hopefully he does turn up and get the ball rolling. It's an ongoing process, day-by-day process. He knows that he's got our full support, and we believe that he will get the ball rolling with a few things that he's got going on." Jeremy Howe's timely return for Collingwood While Hill won't be available, the Pies will get premiership defender Howe back for their tussle with the Demons. The 35-year-old was knocked out and concussed in a sickening collision with Hawthorn player Jai Newcombe in round 22, but is back after missing last week's three-point loss to ladder-leaders Adelaide. Howe has been given the green light to return in a massive boost to Collingwood's flailing campaign. McRae's side have lost four of their last five and are in serious danger of dropping out of the top-four before the finals. "Howey will come back and his experience is important to us. I think he'll play our system really well," McRae said. Collingwood's forward-line connection wasn't up to scratch against the Crows, with the Magpies dominating the inside-50 tally (71-37) but unable to make it count. McRae said he'll consider recalling ruck-forward Mason Cox, with Daniel McStay potentially making way after some quiet performances. "We're working hard with Dan to get him moving and be part of our best team," McRae said. "There's a lot of work behind the scenes to work on his craft, jump at the ball well and fit into our patterns." with AAP

Abdul Carter had an Embarrassing 'Welcome to the NFL' Play on Saturday
Abdul Carter had an Embarrassing 'Welcome to the NFL' Play on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. All eyes were on Abdul Carter and the New York Giants on Saturday afternoon in Week 2 of the preseason as they hosted the New York Jets. After an impressive NFL preseason debut against the Buffalo Bills a week ago, Carter — the former No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft — did what he could to hype up his fans, posting a Star Wars video on his social media to build the hype. Unfortunately, things played out differently against the Jets. In the first half of the game, Carter had his first big "welcome to the NFL" moment, getting chipped to the ground by tight end Stone Smartt, and then pancaked by right tackle Jay Tufele. For someone who stands 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, it was a rather surprising thing to see, especially as talented as Carter is. What Fans Are Saying About Abdul Carter's Mishap There are multiple videos on social media of Carter's unfortunate play, one of which has 1.2 million views already. Others have upwards of 400k views, so you can easily say that this play is going viral. Here's a look at what some fans are saying: "Welcome to the league, young fella," one fan wrote. "Hit the gym, young fella," another added. "Abdul Carter is gonna have his flashy sacks, but he is also gonna have a lot of these plays," said another. "Good player, but not a savant like Micah Parsons." "Abdul Carter is an objectively incredible physical specimen and he just got de-cleated by a TE," one fan said. "NFL talent is so different man. Happens to the best of them." Abdul Carter Stats and Outlook Carter ended up recording just a single tackle in this game, which was a 31-12 win for the Giants. Going forward, there are high expectations for the rookie on New York's front line, especially playing alongside the likes of Kayvon Thibodeaux and Dexter Lawrence. The Giants are hopeful that they can be a decent team in 2025, but there are major questions to answer at the quarterback position. Right now, Russell Wilson is projected to be the starter, but guys like Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart, and Tommy DeVito are all in the mix as story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 17, 2025, where it first appeared.

Son Heung-min unveiled at LAFC press event; blockbuster signing reportedly sets MLS record
LOS ANGELES — It's always Sonny in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Football Club officially unveiled Son Heung-min, their reportedly record-breaking signing, at a press conference at BMO Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 6. "I'm here to win, I will perform. I will definitely show you something exciting," Son said. Son, 33, is considered to be arguably the greatest Asian soccer player ever, having appeared for South Korea 134 times (scoring 51 goals). In a decade with Tottenham, Son scored 173 goals and added 101 assists, captaining the London-based club to its first trophy in 17 years as Spurs won the 2024-25 Europa League final in May. The now-former Tottenham star noted that LAFC was not originally his first choice when moving from the north London side, but was convinced by LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington. "I honestly and openly share what this club is about," Thorrington said at the press conference. "I ask: 'Does this match with your ambition?' and in this case ... it has." Son is one of the highest profile signings in the club's – and arguably league – history following the footsteps of Carlos Vela, Gareth Bale and Olivier Giroux into the Hollywood spotlight. Thorrington said the move was nine years in the making. "What I call the walking paradox that is Sonny, that is this unbelievably charismatic guy but matched with his humility that he walks around with, and his patience, that's what we aspire to be," Thorrington said. The fee LAFC shelled out to seal his move to MLS is to be the largest in league history, according to multiple reports. While MLS clubs have rarely been willing to share exact transfer fees, GiveMeSport reported Aug. 5 that the transfer will surpass Emmanuel Latte Lath's move to Atlanta United this past winter for $22 million. ESPN and The Athletic reported ahead of the announcement that the fee would be at least $26 million, which would mark a new transfer fee record for the league. Thorrington declined to disclose the terms of the contract when asked. AWKWARD: Confused LA councilwoman asks Son to help USMNT win World Cup Debut timetable to be determined Son did not provide a timetable on when he will join the team on the field, saying that he will work with the coaching staff to get on the pitch as soon as possible. "I came here to play soccer and I'm ready to play, but there is some preparation work to be done," Son said. LAFC stands in sixth place in the Western Conference on 36 points with 12 games remaining in MLS play. The team's next three league games are on the road at the Chicago Fire, New England Revolution and FC Dallas. If the club intends to hold the debut until their return to Expo Park, it could be made in a Sunday showcase against San Diego FC on Aug. 31. A 2-1 win over UANL Tigres – with a heavily rotated side and Son looking on from a suite – on Tuesday, Aug. 5 gave LAFC a long-shot chance at progressing in Leagues Cup. Son recognized that LAFC's vocal fan base, led by the supporters' groups that make up the 3252, will hold the star to his promises. "Fans are the most important part of football and also all of the sports," Son said. "We should appreciate that there is support. That should never be free." MLS AT 30: What's next after remarkable growth Korean-American community buzzes about Son signing Rumors of the Black and Gold signing the South Korean superstar sent a buzz through the Korean-American community as news on the progression of the deal were reported out, principally by Tom Bogert of GiveMeSport and international transfer maven Fabrizio Romano. "Son Heung-min's transfer to LAFC presents a rare and powerful opportunity to shift that attention toward LAFC and the MLS," Kyeongjun Kim, a writer with The Korean Daily, the largest Korean-language media outlet in the U.S., told USA TODAY in an email ahead of Wednesday's press conference. "Already, many Korean fans are posting on social media asking how to buy LAFC season tickets or inquiring about the match schedule." Photos published by Agance France-Presse show fans lining up at Los Angeles International Airport at the rumored time of arrival for Son, with one sign reading "Welcome to LA" in Korean. Daniel Park, a native of South Korea who was already in the country on a business trip but took time to visit BMO Stadium just before the press conference, described Son as a celebrity who transcended sports. Beyond his success on the field, Son is a behemoth in the advertising world. Adidas, Burberry, Calvin Klein and Tumi have all named Son a brand ambassador and launched major ad campaigns around him, while he is one of just five soccer players to have a custom character "skin" in one of the most popular video games in the world, Fortnite. "Son's move to the LAFC is as exciting — if not moreso — than when Chan-ho Park and Hyun-jin Ryu joined the Dodgers," Kim wrote. Son is not the first South Korean signing for the club, which had defender Kim Moon-hwan from 2021-2022.
