Mbappe discharged from hospital, not sure whether he will play at Club World Cup
Kylian Mbappe was discharged from the hospital on Thursday (June 19, 2025) after experiencing an acute case of gastroenteritis, and it was not known when he will be able to play for Real Madrid at the Club World Cup.
Mbappe missed the Spanish giant's opening game of the tournament — a surprise 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal in Miami — because of a fever.
Coach Xabi Alonso said the France international was in 'rough shape' and hadn't been able to train for days. His illness casts doubt over what part he might be able to play in the monthlong tournament in the United States, with Madrid facing Pachuca in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday (June 22, 2025).
'Mbappe will continue with specific medical treatment and will gradually return to the team's activity,' Madrid said in a statement.
Gastroenteritis is also known as stomach flu and symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhoea.
Mbappe's absence is a blow to the Club World Cup, which FIFA president Gianni Infantino hopes will be one of the elite events in soccer and rival competitions like the Champions League and Premier League in popularity and value.
After Lionel Messi, Mbappe is arguably the biggest star in the show, with Madrid one of the favourites to lift the trophy in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
But a crowd of more than 62,000 at Hard Rock Stadium missed out on a rare chance to see him in person in the U.S. when he was unavailable for Madrid's first game at the home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins on Wednesday (June 18, 2025).
Alonso missed him, too, in what has been a difficult start to the tournament for the team's new coach. Madrid was underwhelming against Al Hilal – Saudi Arabia's most successful team – and missed a 92nd-minute penalty to win the match.
It was Alonso's first game in charge of the 15-time European champion, which is famously demanding of its coaches. Last month he replaced Carlo Ancelotti, who left to join the Brazil national team after winning three Champions Leagues and two Spanish titles in two stints at the club.
Despite being the overwhelming favourite against Al Hilal, Madrid had to settle for a draw after surviving a number of scares in the first half – leaving Alonso to call for patience. 'We know this is going to take time,' he said.
The 26-year-old Mbappe was Madrid's top scorer last season, with 43 goals in 56 appearances in his first year since joining from Paris Saint-Germain.
His hospitalisation came almost exactly one year after he sustained a broken nose at the European Championship and had to wear a face mask to continue playing in the tournament.

Igor Jesus stars as Botafogo stun Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in Club World Cup
Igor Jesus scored the lone goal as Botafogo pulled off a stunning 1-0 upset win over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Club World Cup on Thursday night. The Brazilian side held firm defensively, frustrating PSG's star-studded attack and securing a historic win that boosts their hopes of reaching the knockout stage. A crowd of 53,699 packed into Pasadena's Rose Bowl to witness the upset. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like War Thunder - Register now for free and play against over 75 Million real Players War Thunder Play Now Undo PSG, considered one of the tournament favorites following their dominant 5-0 Champions League final win over Inter Milan last month, were left frustrated by a disciplined and defiant Botafogo performance. A win would have made the French champions the first team to qualify for the last 16, but their progress was stalled by resolute Brazilian resistance. Live Events 'A lot of people had doubts, but we showed how strong Botafogo is,' said Jesus, whose goal made the difference. 'It was tough. We had to defend well, and we did our job. One team is the Champions League winner, the other is South America's champion. We knew how important it was.' — FIFACWC (@FIFACWC) PSG began brightly, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia forcing an early save from goalkeeper John in just the second minute. However, that proved to be their best chance in a scrappy, foul-filled first half that disrupted their rhythm. Botafogo's midfield trio of Marlon Freitas, Gregore, and Allan put in a tireless shift, effectively neutralizing Vitinha and denying PSG any attacking fluency despite their dominance in possession. The decisive moment came in the 36th minute, when Jefferson Savarino threaded a perfect through ball to Jesus. The striker showed composure to evade Willian Pacho and fired a low shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma with a slight deflection. PSG controlled the ball throughout the second half and spent most of it in Botafogo's half, but couldn't break down the well-organized defense. With a final Group B match against Atletico Madrid still to come on Monday, Botafogo are now in a commanding position to advance to the last 16.

Club World Cup 2025: Botafogo stuns Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Igor Jesus' goal
Botafogo stunned Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 on Thursday night in each club's second match of the Club World Cup. Igor Jesus scored late in the first half, and the South American champions made it stand up through a tense second half while moving atop the group at 2-0-0. PSG hadn't lost in any competition since May 3, but the European champions looked understandably weary at times before a lively Rose Bowl crowd of 53,699. Jesus' stunning score in the 36th minute was the first goal allowed since May 17 by PSG, which routed Atlético Madrid 4-0 last Sunday in Pasadena. The French powerhouse had outscored its last three opponents by a combined 12-0, winning the French Cup and the Champions League final along the way. Ballon d'Or contender Ousmane Dembélé missed his second straight game for PSG with a quadriceps injury. His teammates still dominated possession in the first half, even though coach Luis Enrique rotated his starting lineup. Everything came undone with the remarkable individual effort by Jesus, the Brazilian striker reportedly headed for Nottingham Forest next season. PSG finished with 16 shot attempts to Botafogo's four — but all four were on target, whereas PSG only got two on net. Jesus controlled Jefferson Savarino's long pass, outmaneuvered two defenders and thumped a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. He leaped over a barrier and up onto the front row of the Rose Bowl stands to celebrate with Botafogo's ecstatic supporters. PSG had little of the sublime connective play that characterized its stellar run over the past month, but Enrique's club is still in strong position to advance as it heads to Seattle on Monday to play Major League Soccer's Sounders. Thousands of boisterous Brazilian fans made the trip to celebrate one of the most remarkable victories in Botafogo's storied history. The club faces Atlético on Monday at the Rose Bowl with a surprising chance to advance from this difficult group.
