UK Implements Ban on Single-Use E-Cigarettes

The United Kingdom has officially
prohibited
the sale of single-use e-cigarettes starting Sunday, following the example of Belgium and France.
These disposable vaping devices, known for their colorful designs and sweet flavors, have gained popularity among young people since their introduction in 2021.
Single-use e-cigarettes have been widely available across UK streets, contributing to nicotine addiction among children and teenagers.
The ban targets the sale and distribution of these inexpensive products, with penalties including fines of £200 ($269) for first offences and potential imprisonment of up to two years for repeat violations. This legislation was initiated under the previous Conservative government and has now taken effect.
Reports from the non-profit organization Material Focus reveal that around five million single-use e-cigarettes were discarded weekly in the UK in 2024, resulting in over 40 tonnes of lithium waste annually.
This amount of lithium could power approximately 5,000 electric vehicles, and the discarded waste presents fire risks in household rubbish.
Data from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) indicates that 11% of adults in the UK—about 5.6 million people—use e-cigarettes. Among young people aged 11 to 17, 18% (around 980,000 individuals) reported using e-cigarettes in 2024.
The new law aims to reduce e-cigarette use among youth while maintaining access to products that support smoking cessation. Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes do not produce harmful tar or carbon monoxide but still contain highly addictive nicotine.
Following the announcement of the ban, the use of single-use e-cigarettes has declined significantly. Among e-cigarette users aged 18 to 24, the proportion using disposable devices dropped from 52% in 2024 to 40% in 2025.
Earlier this year, France and Belgium became the first European countries to ban single-use e-cigarettes, with Ireland currently considering similar measures.
Industry representatives warn that the ban could encourage the growth of a black market, increasing the circulation of potentially unsafe products. The law criminalizes the sale of single-use e-cigarettes but does not prohibit their use, raising concerns about enforcement and public safety.

Mohamed Mandour The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Family and Childhood Department), in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is convening a regional workshop on internal displacement and its impact on children in the Arab region via an online platform. The workshop is held within the framework of the Joint Action Plan between the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Family and Childhood Department) and UNHCR for the period 2024–2025, which seeks to strengthen collaborative efforts to address internal displacement and its multifaceted consequences. The workshop is bringing together representatives from relevant national mechanisms in member states responsible for issues of asylum and displacement, along with experts and specialists in the field of childhood in the Arab region. The agenda includes a range of thematic discussions aimed at deepening understanding of international and regional legal frameworks governing the protection of internally displaced persons, with particular attention to the specific vulnerabilities and needs of displaced children. The programme also explores proposed interventions to improve their humanitarian and legal conditions. Egypt's pharmaceutical market hits EGP 309bn in 2024, marking 43% growth
Egypt's pharmaceutical market recorded EGP 309bn in sales in 2024, up from EGP 216bn in 2023—reflecting a 43% year-on-year increase, according to Ali Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA). The announcement came during the EDA's 15th Board of Directors meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Mohamed El-Khatib, and Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, alongside other senior officials. The meeting reviewed several strategic updates, including the latest activities of the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Pharmacopeia and progress in digital transformation across the Authority. These digital initiatives aim to enhance service delivery efficiency and strengthen the institutional work environment. A key highlight of the meeting was the EDA's continued success in gaining international accreditation. In December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded the Authority Maturity Level 3 status in the field of medicines—an achievement that follows its earlier Maturity Level 3 accreditation for vaccines in March 2022. EDA laboratories have also been accredited by both the WHO and the European Union, a milestone that positions them as globally recognized reference labs. The Authority's growing international presence was further underscored by its contributions to regulatory capacity-building programs across the Arab and African regions. With WHO Maturity Level 3 recognition in both medicine and vaccine regulation, the EDA has assumed a leading role in supporting regulatory system development throughout Africa. The African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) has selected EDA's Continuing Professional Development Center as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE). Under this designation, the Authority has conducted 12 international training programs for countries including Libya, Yemen, Ghana, and Algeria. Additionally, the meeting showcased progress in EDA's internship programs, including the pilot launch of a new Learning Management System (LMS) platform aimed at enhancing professional training and knowledge transfer.

Catastrophic Conditions in Operating Rooms and Intensive Care Units in Gaza
Amir hagag Medical sources in the Gaza Strip said, "The operating rooms, intensive care units, and emergency rooms are experiencing catastrophic conditions, with an increase in serious injuries due to the ongoing and violent Israeli bombardment of various parts of the Gaza Strip." The sources added, according to the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), that the shortage of life-saving medicines, medical supplies, and diagnostic imaging equipment is preventing urgent surgical interventions for the wounded. They noted that community appeals for blood donations have become ineffective, with malnutrition worsening among citizens. The sources explained that generators are operating on limited fuel reserves to supply vital departments with electricity. Since October 7, 2023, the death toll in the Gaza Strip has reached 54,510, the majority of whom are children and women, as a result of the Israeli occupation's aggression.
