Giants sign highly touted international guard

West Australian14-05-2025
Goldfields Giants' push for a maiden playoffs berth this year in the women's NBL1 West division was boosted last weekend with the acquisition of Filipino guard Hazelle Yam.
The 27-year-old, from Quezon City, joins a squad that sits in ninth position, with a 2-4 win-loss record.
'Yam, renowned for her speed and playmaking abilities, brings a wealth of experience from both collegiate and international basketball arenas,' the club said in a statement.
'A stand-out at Ateneo de Manila University, Yam was celebrated for her lightning-quick drives and leadership on the court.
'Her transition to international play saw her represent the Philippines in the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series, where she showcased her skills against top-tier global competition.
'Yam's addition is expected to bolster the Giants' back court — her versatility and experience are anticipated to be pivotal as the team aims to improve on previous season performances.'
Goldfields currently sit two games outside the top-eight.

Magic survive elimination final

Mandurah Magic's in-form women's basketballers are eyeing a giant-killing run through the NBL1 West playoffs after cruising through their elimination final against East Perth. The 45-point blowout last Saturday sets up an appetising knockout semi-final this Thursday against Rockingham Flames, with the winner of that game to face Warwick Senators on Saturday for a spot in the grand final. But it's season over for Mandurah's men's team, who bowed out of their championship defence with a 109-95 loss in Kalgoorlie to the Goldfields Giants. The final scoreline did not reflect how the game panned out nor the chance Mandurah — playing without injured stars Julian Pesava and Jacoree Ealy — had to pull off a surprise road victory. The Magic led by 19 points midway through a huge first term but the home side whittled the break over the next 20 minutes to be in front by a point at the last change. And as things got heated on court, it was the Giants and the parochial home crowd that took the momentum, surging to a big lead and eventual victory. Lachie Bertram led Mandurah with 26 points while De'Sean Parsons wound back the clock for Goldfields in scoring 38 points. The Magic women were never headed in their 105-60 victory over the Eagles at home in Mandurah, opening an 11-point break by quarter-time and building on it every period. Claire Jacobs was the star with a sharpshooting 35-point haul that included 7 of 13 three-pointers and all eight of her free throw attempts. Import McKenna Dale finished desperately close to a rare triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds and 10 assists. Fellow American Tina Stephens dominated with 27 points in just 21 minutes of court time as Mandurah coach Vlad Alama was able to rest his starters often and share the playing minutes. In all, 11 of Mandurah's 12 players hit the scoresheet, with the bench unit contributing 22 points. The Flames will be considerably tougher to knock off. Last year's champions are peaking at the right end of the season and went within a whisker of handing Cockburn Cougars their first loss of 2025 in last weekend's qualifying final. Thursday's game will be played at Rockingham's Mike Barnett Sports Complex from 6.30pm.

White, Flames seek ultimate glory

The road to the NBL1 West men's championship will run through Rockingham after the Flames secured top spot and a bevy of regular season awards ahead of the playoffs. Star recruit Isaac White was named league MVP on Saturday night to further justify his shift west during the NBL off-season. White, who led the Flames with 30 points per game, was also named in the league's All Star team alongside the man many had tipped for the best player award, Stirling Senators shooter Elijah Pepper. Pepper comfortably led the league in scoring, with a record 59-point game last month against the South West Slammers one of four times he dropped 50 or more in a game. He averaged 36.5 points per game, six more than White who was closest. But White, who is bound for the Adelaide 36ers this NBL season, polled 170 votes and led the count all night to finish 22 votes clear of Pepper. Head coach Ryan Petrik was honoured for guiding the Flames to a league-best 19-3 record, while Emmitt Naar — who also moved west with White after both had played for the Brisbane Bullets — led the league in assists, averaging more than eight per game. The individual accolades came one day after the Flames' 101-79 rout of Lakeside Lighting in their final tune-up before the playoffs begin this weekend. The Flames — chasing a second title in three years — will host fourth-placed Willetton in a qualifying final on Saturday night at Mike Barnett Sports Complex, with the winner just one step from a grand final berth. The loser will get a second chance and hosting rights for the semi-final round. Rockingham cruised to victory against the Lightning on Friday night, with the match effectively over by three-quarter time and the hosts up by 23 points. White led the way with 24 points but was able to spend more time on the bench than normal as Petrick shared the playing minutes around. Justin Beard hit five three-pointers and Jervon Pressley impressed with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds as Rockingham's depth players chimed in with a combined 39 points. Lakeside relied heavily on import Isaiah Lewis (27 points) and Rowan Mackenzie (28 points) for their scoring, with captain Josh Davey and ex-Wildcat Corey Sherville kept to single figures.

Pacman still packs a punch but falls short in title bid

Manny Pacquiao pushed back against his doubters, the odds and even Father Time - and he very nearly made some history. But Pacquiao, in the end, fell just short on the judges' scorecards as Mario Barrios escaped with a majority draw to retain the WBC welterweight championship on Saturday night (Sunday AEST). Two judges scored the bout a draw, and judge Max De Luca awarded Barrios a 115-113 victory. "I thought I won the fight," Pacquiao said. Barrios landed more total punches (120-101), according to Compubox, but Pacquiao had the edge in power shots (81-75). Pacquiao, enshrined into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last month, was trying to break his own record for oldest welterweight champion. He was 40 when he emerged in 2019 with a split decision over American Keith Thurman. It also was the first appearance in the ring in nearly four years for the 46-year-old Filipino, his previous bout a loss by unanimous decision to Yordenis Ugás. Barrios, a 30-year-old from San Antonio who was the heavy pre-fight favourite, was hoping to bounce back from a split-decision draw on November 15 against Abel Ramos. However, he didn't exactly come away with an emphatic victory in improving to 29-2-2. The heavily pro-Pacquiao crowd loudly booed the decision. "It was an honour to share the ring with him," Barrios said. "This is by far the biggest event I've had to date, and we came in here and left everything in the ring. I have nothing but respect for Manny. "His stamina is crazy. He's still strong as hell and his timing is real. He's still a very awkward fighter to try to figure out." "Pacman" (62-9-2) moved swiftly around the ring from the beginning, often looking more like the younger champion who captured 12 world titles in eight divisions. He began to be take control in the seventh, landing several big left hands to win the following three rounds on two cards and two on the other. But Barrios was the better fighter at the end, coming out more aggressive knowing he might be in trouble with the judges. All three, in fact, awarded Barrios each of the final three rounds. "I didn't think the fight was getting away from me, but I knew I had to step it up to solidify a win," Barrios said. Both sides said they would be interested in a rematch. "I hope this is an inspiration to boxers that if you have discipline and work hard you can still fight at this age," Pacquiao said.
