Shamed Rufus McLean called up by USA... and could face Scotland at Murrayfield later this year
Shamed former Scotland star Rufus McLean is set to make a controversial return to international rugby with the USA - and could potentially face Gregor Townsend 's side at Murrayfield this year.
The ex-Glasgow Warriors winger looked set to become a regular fixture in the Scotland squad when he won three caps and scored twice on his debut against Tonga in 2021.
Then came the shocking revelation McLean had subjected his former partner Cara Haston to a two-year campaign of domestic abuse.
Handed a 120-hour community payback order by Sheriff Matthew Auchinloss and banned from contacting Haston for 10 years, the former Merchiston High pupil was sacked by Scottish Rugby for 'gross misconduct and breach of contract'.
Now, having since moved to America, he is set to return to the international fold with the US after fulfilling World Rugby's regulation that states a player is eligible to switch nationalities after a three-year 'cooling off' period in which they haven't been capped.
McLean's final Scotland appearance was on July 16, 2022.
Now McLean could play against Scotland for the USA in the Autumn Test series
He has been named in the USA Eagles' squad for their summer fixtures and could make his debut against England at Audi Field in Washington DC on July 19.
McLean could also line up against Scotland at Murrayfield later this year when the countries meet in the November Test series.
Boston-born McLean moved to the US last year when he was signed by the Colorado-based American Raptors before switching to the Houston SaberCats earlier this year.
USA Eagles head coach Scott Lawrence said: 'Generally across the outside backs, one of the things we wanted to do was increase the team speed.
'So when you look at a guy who runs 10.4 metres per second, and who has played at a high level of rugby, you go: 'Yeah, that's a guy that helps us achieve that'.
'It's good to have him (McLean) in the mix this year. I think that's a huge one.'
McLean engaged in a campaign of 'aggressive' and 'controlling' domestic abuse against his former partner.
He admitted in court he had regularly sworn at her and been verbally abusive towards her, pushed her to her injury, tracked her movements via her phone's location service, requested passwords for her social media accounts and dictated what she could and couldn't wear.

The Lionel Messi moment that inspired Inter Miami to first Club World Cup win
Lionel Messi scored a fine free-kick as Inter Miami came from behind to beat Porto 2-1 in Atlanta and get their first win of the Club World Cup. Inter Miami - held to a goalless draw by Egyptian side Al Ahly in their opening Group A fixture at Hard Rock Stadium - recovered after falling behind to an early penalty from Porto forward Samu Aghehowa. The Major League Soccer outfit were back on level terms just two minutes into the second half when Venezuela midfielder Telasco Segovia fired home from Marcelo Weigandt's cross. Messi completed the turnaround in the 53rd minute when he curled a 20-yard free-kick into the top corner. Palmeiras had earlier beaten Al Ahly 2-0 at the MetLife Stadium, with the game interrupted during the second half because of the threat of lightning in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Brazilians had seen forward Raphael Veiga shown a straight red card by English referee Anthony Taylor in the 37th minute following a high challenge on Al Ahly winger Zizo. However, after being advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, Taylor changed his decision to issue only a yellow card. Palmeiras broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half through an own goal when Al Ahly forward Wessam Abou Ali headed a deep free-kick into the top corner of his own net before substitute Flaco Lopez broke clear to double the lead just ahead of the hour. With thunderstorms looming, the players were soon signalled to come off as the match was suspended in the 63rd minute. A notice was displayed on the stadium's big screen, directing all spectators to leave the seated bowl area and take shelter inside "for your safety" because of "severe weather in the area". Following a delay of around 45 minutes, with the weather conditions improved, play was able to continue. Palmeiras went on to close out a first win - which puts them level on four points with Inter Miami ahead of their final group game at the Hard Rock Stadium on June 24.

Fever coach Stephanie White to miss game vs. Valkyries
June 19 - Indiana coach Stephanie White will miss her second game this season for personal reasons when the Fever visit the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday night in San Francisco. The Fever (6-5) said White is tending to a personal matter, with assistant coach Austin Kelly serving as acting head coach for Indiana's first game against the expansion Golden State franchise (5-6). Kelly also served as head coach on June 7, when the Fever beat the host Chicago Sky 79-52 on June 7. White, 47, was attending to a family matter. "It's going to be the same," Kelly said after Thursday's shootaround, according to an ESPN report. "I think we are an extension of each other. "The message is still the same that we talk about in the locker room: playing for each other, getting it done on the defensive end and then having that help fuel us on the offensive end. But the vibes are good." It is the first season of White's second stint as Indiana's head coach. She led the Fever from 2015-16 and returned after spending the past two seasons coaching the Connecticut Sun. --Field Level Media
