NMC picks holes in MMCH's report, cites several deficiencies

Daltonganj: The National Medical Commission's (NMC) undergraduate medical education board (UGMEB) has red-flagged nine deficiencies in the Medinirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in Daltonganj based on the health institute's annual disclosure report (ADR) in April this year.
Medical colleges are mandated to submit their ADR for permission to admit students in the first year of the MBBS courses every calendar year. However, the red flagging has now put the fate of MMCH in a limbo.
Principal of MMCH Daltonganj, Dr P N Mahto, said, "The director of UGMEB has issued a show cause notice to this medical college, seeking our response to the issues raised by them."
Sources said the UGMEB director, Sukh Lal Meena, sent the notice to this medical college in the first week of May.
The deficiencies are varied and broad ranging from faculty crunch to facilities. "This medical college is operating with only 30% of the required faculty and rest are vacant," the principal said.
UGMEB also raised concern over the number of beds. It must be 500 as per NMC's norms. MMCH currently has 353 beds. "By the end of Dec, the college will have 500 beds for which works are underway," said the principal.
The poor bed occupancy too was highlighted. The normal percentage of bed occupancy is over 90%. However, the UGMEB found it to be only 66.6%.
"Once we become a 500-bed hospital, our bed occupancy percentage will increase," the principal added. MMCH also has lesser number of cadavers as opposed to the prescribe 10 in number. "

Porvorim: The directorate of health services has proposed to increase the number of MBBS seats at the GMC from the current 200 to 250, said health minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday. He also said govt is working on a proposal to set up a nursing college at the South Goa District Hospital. Stating that cancer is growing at a 'galloping pace' in Goa, Rane said the state cancer institute's tie-up with the Tata Memorial Hospital will provide Goans with better treatment options at a much more affordable rates. Merit cut-off for medical admissions in Gujarat expected to drop by 100 marks
Ahmedabad: The admission committee for professional medical educational courses (ACPUGMEC) released the provisional merit list for medical, dental, ayurvedic, and homeopathy courses on Thursday, bringing relief to aspiring medical students across Gujarat. This year's merit cut-off is expected to fall by at least 100 marks compared to the previous year. While the final admission was secured at 430 marks in 2024, this year's cut-off is projected to drop to at least 330 marks, opening new avenues for lower-ranked candidates to secure MBBS seats. The huge drop in cut-off scores is reflected in the overall performance of the candidates. Last year's NEET exam saw the top scorer from the state achieving 720 marks, but this year's highest merit in the state stands at just 657 marks — a 63-mark decline in the top score. The impact is evident at institutions such as BJ Medical College, where last year's final open category admission was at 699 marks. However, inspired by her daughter's preparation for the national screening test, she began her own preparation. She scored 147 marks out of 720 in NEET. Meanwhile, Samyuktha, who scored 450 marks, is awaiting a seat through the general category and is also eligible under the SC quota. 'My ambition was rekindled after I saw my daughter prepare for NEET. She was my greatest inspiration. I borrowed her books and prepared for the exam," a jubilant Amuthavalli said. M Samyuktha, a CBSE student, attended coaching classes, and the books she used also helped her mother. 'I found it easy to memorise when I recount what I have studied to someone. My father, being a lawyer by profession, was not interested in medicine. And since she hailed from a medical background, my mother was receptive," she said. On July 30, when counselling for TN medical admission began, Amuthavalli, accompanied by her daughter, attended the counselling under the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD) category and chose to join the government medical college in Virudhunagar, near her native Tenkasi. Amuthavalli mentioned that she tried to join the MBBS course after finishing school about thirty years ago but couldn't, and had to pursue physiotherapy instead. Speaking to reporters, Samyuktha said, 'I don't want to study in the same college with my mother. I wish to compete in the general quota and study elsewhere, maybe outside the state." 'My husband was very supportive. He encouraged us to study for NEET," Amuthavalli added.
