Min vows to fix drain water issues in Vijayawada in six months
Blaming the YSRCP regime for halting the stormwater drain works mid-way, he said the decision had led to chronic waterlogging during rains.
'Between 2014 and 2019, Rs 500 crore was sanctioned and 55% of the drain works were completed. But the succeeding government stalled the project, aggravating the problem,' he said.
Pointing to narrowed drains and rampant encroachments, Narayana said in several places the drain width had reduced from 10 feet to as little as two feet. He instructed Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials to identify and mark all encroachments.
'If houses are affected in the process, TIDCO houses will be allotted. The intention is not to harm the poor but to resolve the root problem,' he said.
Narayana announced that drainage works would resume in September with funds from VMC and APCRDA, and would be completed within six months.

‘Not My Father's Money': Will Maharashtra Minister's Remark After Cash Bag Row Prove Costly For Him?
Shinde Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat's remark comes days after CM Fadnavis, in a cabinet meeting, issued a strict warning to all ministers, saying 'nonsense' won't be tolerated Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) leader and Maharashtra's Minister for Social Justice Sanjay Shirsat is once again in the middle of a political storm. Just weeks after a video went viral showing him smoking next to a bag allegedly filled with cash, Shirsat has now stirred fresh controversy with another careless statement — this time while addressing a public function in Akola. Speaking at the inauguration of a Social Justice Bhavan, Shirsat made an off-the-cuff remark that has not gone down well with political circles. 'Ask for Rs 5, Rs 10 or Rs 15 crore — I'll approve it immediately. It's government money, not my father's," he said, triggering fresh outrage over the tone and attitude of public representatives handling public funds. This latest statement is likely to test Fadnavis' patience. While the CM has been trying to steer the government clear of needless controversies, repeated incidents like these — especially from the same minister — are causing political embarrassment. Sources suggest that Fadnavis is not pleased, and action may be on the cards if Shirsat doesn't fall in line. Interestingly, in the same speech, Shirsat also advised NCP MLA Amol Mitkari to speak cautiously. 'You give good TRP to the media, but don't talk too much. Otherwise, you'll be in the same situation as me," he said — almost joking about his own previous run-ins with the media. The comment reflects both a lack of remorse and a misplaced confidence that such controversies will blow over without consequence. What's worrying party leaders, however, is the pattern — Shirsat's previous video already put him in a tight spot, with his party leadership reportedly expressing disapproval in private. Now, with this fresh controversy, murmurs within the Mahayuti alliance have started again. Shirsat's refusal to tone down his words despite clear instructions has also reignited public debate over how ministers treat taxpayers' money. Opposition parties are already sharpening their attack, questioning whether the BJP-Sena-led alliance is serious about governance or simply brushing aside such irresponsible behaviour. As public pressure builds, all eyes are now on the Chief Minister. Will he act against Sanjay Shirsat this time, or will this too be let go as 'just another slip of tongue"? — Rohit Pawar (@RRPSpeaks) August 3, 2025 Opposition reacts Shiv Sena UBT leader Aditya Thackeray on microblogging website X had posted video of Minister Sanjay Shirsat and tagged CMO Maharashtra and wished him 'happy friendship day". He further wrote, 'Due to compulsion of alliance Dharma, Minister who was caught playing cards on mobile was given Sports department. Now will this minister get Finance department?" NCP(SP) MLA Rohit Pawar also posted same video of Shirsat and slammed him for the language and tone which he had used. 'Minister Shirsath, even if the money doesn't come from your personal household, it certainly belongs to the common people of the state whom you call #MyLord during election time! You being minister in the state govt who has given responsibility utilize this money is merely temporary trustees. Therefore, no one has the right to recklessly squander government funds or 'fill their bags' just because it's not their personal money." Revised collector rates in Haryana spark backlash
Chandigarh: As the govt is showing no signs of a rollback in the revised collector rates, the revenue generation move has boomeranged into a major political and public issue across the state. With an eye on additional revenue generation of Rs 5,000 crore through stamp duty, the revenue and disaster management department reportedly revised the collector rates – increase varying from 30% in the low potential areas to over 150% in the high and hyper potential areas of the NCR and Panchkula. According to information, the rates were revised for the second time in a year. The revision came in line with the revision of levies on building material like sand, gravel, and steel, which further impacted the cost of construction. "It's nothing but the poor fiscal management of the successive chief ministers since 2014 that is to be blamed. Now, during the current tenure, the financial resources are draining out, and the common man is burdened to cover up the losses. This revision of collector rates appears to be an attempt to cover up the losses suffered by the govt on account of anticipated revenue loss due to various auctions of liquor vends," claimed Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala. In the last eight months, the rates have been revised for the second time, that too without holding any survey, discussion with the stakeholders, and without any justification, said Surjewala. The builders and developers fear that the increase in collector rates would bring market activities to a standstill as it would force buyers to look for alternatives. "Firstly, there is hardly any land available in high and hyper zones of the NCR and Panchkula. Whatever land is available will become out of reach for commoners or small developers or builders. In such a case, people shall opt for unauthorised colonies. Hence, the govt should roll back the collector rates with immediate effect," said a developer. A property dealer claimed that the govt did not call for objections or give appropriate time for implementation of revised rates. "The buyers who have made financial arrangements in accordance with old rates are in a fix, as the govt has not given any window for them as well. In most cases, deals mature within one to three months," said a property dealer. On Saturday, the govt admitted some increase but clarified that it was almost negligible and there could be some places where the increase was to the effect of 25%. The govt also justified the revision due to the consistent demand of farmers who sought a revision of collector rates for the purpose of compensation for land acquisition.
