Blink 182 star reveals he thought he was going to die after shock cancer diagnosis and prepared for family ‘to move on'

The Irish Sun02-05-2025
BLINK-182 frontman Mark Hoppus has revealed he genuinely believed he was going to die after being diagnosed with a fast-spreading cancer and had even started preparing his family for life without him.
Speaking on the four-year anniversary of his diagnosis, the pop-punk legend, 53, recalled how the news came out of nowhere while he was relaxing at home.

The All The Small Things singer told Radio X presenter
'I was playing video games and I was talking to my son who was away at college and I felt a weird thing on my shoulder.
'And three days later I was going ready for chemo. That quick.'
Mark was diagnosed with stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a serious blood cancer for which there is no standard treatment.

'The chemo was awful, it was brutal,' he added.
'The good news is my form of cancer, the doctor told me I had a 60% chance of getting through it and never having to deal with it again.
'But the bad part was the chemo was one of the worst that you could undergo and it was bad.
'I don't recommend it. Zero out of five stars. But it saved me so it was all good.'

Mark admitted the emotional toll was just as devastating as he wasn't feeling at all hopeful.
He said he had prepared for his family, including wife Kelly and son Jack, to 'move on' after his death.
Blink 182's Mark Hoppus shares heartbreaking update in cancer battle revealing he has stage 4 lymphoma
'Oh yeah, it was pretty dark,' he told Chris.
'It was awful and I really thought that I wasn't going to make it. I thought I was on the wrong side of that 60%,' he said.
'I was mentally preparing for my family moving on and what my wife was going to do after I was gone and who was going to help raise my son.'
Now in remission, Mark says he's grateful just to be alive and working again.
He said: 'So to be here with you all today and to sit next to Captain Crap Beard is just a dream come true.'
Mark co-founded Blink-182 in the early '90s with Tom DeLonge, who left and rejoined the band multiple times over the years.
Travis Barker joined as drummer in 1998 after original member Scott Raynor's departure, helping launch the band to mainstream stardom with albums like Enema of the State and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket.
Travis himself has faced death - surviving a horrific 2008
He and DJ AM were the only survivors, and Travis underwent over 20 surgeries and months of rehab.
Now, all three original members are back together, with their latest album One More Time, released last year.
But for a brief time, Tom was absen from the band.
Tom previously left in 2005 to form Angels & Airwaves after Blink-182 split and went on an indefinite hiatus.
He left again in 2015 and was then slammed by Mark and Travis.
In an interview with
'We booked January 5th to go into the studio. On December 30th, we get an e-mail from Tom's manager saying that he has no interest in recording and that he wants to do his other, non-musical stuff and that he's out indefinitely,' Hoppus recalled at the time.
'There's a flurry of e-mails going back and forth for clarification about the recording and the show and his manager sends [an e-mail] back saying, 'Tom. Is. Out.' Direct quote. This is the exact same e-mail we got back in 2004 when Tom went on indefinite hiatus before.'
Travis added: 'I think he's just bummed because Mark and I were finally honest. We always covered up for him before… It's hard to cover for someone who's disrespectful and ungrateful.
"You don't even have the balls to call your bandmates and tell them you're not going to record or do anything Blink-related. You have your manager do it. Everyone should know what the story is with him and it's been years with it.'
Despite the bad blood between the former bandmates, Mark and Tom were "able to completely repair" their friendship as the years went on.
"
The way the universe works is strange because I reached out to Mark because I needed him to sign this piece of paper that had to do with my divorce," DeLonge said in a 2021
"Only because of that call did I learn he had cancer. And he told me on the phone. I was like, 'Wait, what?"
He added: "We weren't really talking much at all, maybe once every couple of months, a little text here and there. But now, we talk multiple times a day.
"We've been able to completely repair that friendship and really cut to the depth of who we are as people and what this is all about."
Is Tom DeLonge back in Blink-182?
Travis and Mark continued to make music without Tom for years, but fans often wondered if he would ever make a return.
That question was later answered in October 2022, when it was revealed that he had rejoined the band.
'Tom DeLonge has rejoined blink-182 and they are coming to the United Center,' Troy Hanson, the Vice President of Rock Programming at Cumulus Media, said on the
'Live Nation that's my gift to you for doing this whole thing in late October with Panic! At The Disco. I just blew your nut on Blink-182. Sorry not sorry.'

Taking to Instagram at the time, Hayley wrote in her Story: 'It is with regret I announce that myself and Mark have gone our separate ways. "We had the best year together and I truly wish him all the best for the future." The Sun later told how Mark took a swipe at his ex, saying he would only consider divorcing estranged wife Katie if he met someone serious. 'Facts are easy. Numbers are easy. People are complicated. 'I could sum me up as the kind of guy who could tell you the capital of Estonia is Tallinn but would have no idea why that pretty girl is giving me a funny half-smile. Brother's heartbreaking ‘rare gift' funeral tribute as son of ex-Dunnes Stores tycoon laid to rest after death in NYC

THE son of ex-Dunnes Stores boss Ben Dunne was remembered as a "sharp, quick-witted, funny and caring" man by his heartbroken brother at his funeral mass this morning. Mourners, including people who travelled from the USA, packed out St Mochta's Church in Porterstown, Clonsilla this morning as Robert's funeral mass was told how he "will be missed by so many". Dunnes Stores CEO Margaret Heffernan and Independent TD Michael Lowry were among those who attended the service for the 50-year-old. As people filed into the church, Live Forever by Oasis, which was one of Robert's favourite songs played through the speakers. Robert's brother Mark described his sibling as a "real prankster" who "loved to share a good book" - but a "sparkle in his eye" was warning that he was about to pull one over you. Mark said: "He'd tell you all about some brilliant novel he'd just read. A real page-turner he'd say. Couldn't put it down. "Because he was generous like that, he'd buy copies for his friends and people he knew would really enjoy the book. "The catch was, if you were lucky enough to get one of these books from Rob. You were also unlucky enough to discover right at the most dramatic moment that he had ripped out the last page and in its place the big bold letters 'HAHA'. "It was maddening of course but that was Rob. He loved to make people laugh, often in the most unexpected ways." RTE viewers all left with same complaint about new documentary on supermarket tycoon Ben Dunne Robert had studied law in Trinity College before continuing his studies at the London School of Economics, with his brother Mark telling how one law degree "wasn't quite enough" for his sibling's "sharp mind and love of a good debate". Mark said: "Rob approached his education the way he approached most things in life. With determination, curiosity and just enough charm to make even the driest legal theories sound interesting. "And while his qualifications were impressive it was the friendships, the stories and the mischief along the way that truly left their mark. "It was during these years that Rob forged many of his friendships that would last his whole life. "He was sharp-minded and detailed always ready to probe a little deeper into a conversation to ask the question you didn't see coming." Robert moved to America and began his career in Washington DC after finishing his studies in London before making the "life-changing" decision to move to New York City in 2002. Mark said his brother was "captivated" by everything the Big Apple had to offer. LIFE 'BECAME MORE DIFFICULT' He said: "Rob didn't just live in New York. he embraced it. He loved its energy, its characters and its possibilities. "I can recall so many visits where we'd head to his favorite steakhouse or bar and without fail he'd know the bartenders by their first name and they'd greet him like an old friend. "One of his most beloved haunts was a place called Mimi's on Second Avenue where he'd often sit at the piano and play. Singing with the easy confidence of his while the yellow cabs whizzed by outside the window. "And I can still see it now. Rob at the piano in the heart of Manhattan completely at home in his city creating his own New York moments." Mark said his brother "could light up a room just by walking in". He explained: With Rob there was always a new story to tell, sometimes funny, sometimes outrageous, always peppered with movie references and quotes, delivered with perfect timing and that signature spark that kept you hanging on every word. "Those moments weren't just entertaining, they made people feel seen, included and part of something special and that I think was one of Rob's greatest gifts." Mark told mourners that "life became more difficult for Rob" in more recent years, after the COVID pandemic sparked months of isolation and the passing of his dad Ben Dunne "hit him deeply". But he said there are "pieces of Rob that will stay with us always". 'ROB WILL BE MISSED BY SO MANY' Mark explained: "When I think about Rob, so many words come to mind. "A raconteur, complex, sharp, quick-witted, funny, playful, loving, caring. "He had that rare gift of being able to see the humour in almost anything, even in the most ordinary moments, and to share that humour in a way that drew people to him. "He made us laugh, he made us think, and he made us feel part of his world. "Whether he was telling a story peppered with movie quotes, sitting at a piano bar in Manhattan, or turning a quiet evening into a comedy scene, Rob had a way of making life bigger, brighter, and more memorable." Mark continued: "And while today we feel his absence deeply, I know that for each of us there's an image of Rob that will always make us smile. "It might be a flash of that mischievous grin, the sound of his laugh cutting through a crowded room, or the way he could hold court with a story that had everyone hanging on every word. "Those memories aren't just echoes of the past, they're part of who we are now, stitched into our lives. They remind us that Rob's humur, his warmth, and his spirit are still here with us, and always will be. "Rob will be missed by so many, by those who knew him well, by those who crossed his path briefly, and by everyone whose lives he touched in ways big and small. "He was so deeply loved as a son, as a brother, as an uncle, as a nephew, as a cousin, and as a dear friend. He's left us far too soon. And the ache of that will stay with us." Robert was laid to rest in Castleknock Churchyard after his funeral mass this morning.
