Nothing changes at Nicholls

American Press09-08-2025
Latest in a series looking at the Southland Conference football season.
Nicholls State
Nickname: Colonels
2024: 4-8, 2-5
Head coach: Tommy Rybacki
Quick hit: Offense has to catch up with the defense to turn Nicholls around
While a lot has changed at Nicholls, the style of play won't.
Tommy Rybacki takes over as head coach after serving as the Colonels' defensive coordinator for the last decade. He replaces Tim Rebowe, who turned the program from a disaster to a contender during his tenure.
'I learned a lot from Tim Rebowe,' said Rybacki. 'I would put the progress we have made over the last 10 years up against anybody in FCS football. Our job is to make the same amount of progress over the next 10 years.'
That will be up to Rybacki now. He takes over a program that is built on toughness and developing local kids.
'The plan for us is to be in the best condition,' said senior defensive back Ty Marsh. 'We have to be in top-tier shape going into the season.'
Nicholls will jump right into the fire when it opens the season at home on national television against defending champion Incarnate Word. The Colonels will learn quickly just where they stand under their new leadership.
That game will take place under the noon sun on August 23 during Week Zero.
'This is a great opportunity for our program and our community,' said Rybacki. 'We get to open up with the champs. We would not want it any other way.
'We get a measuring game right off the bat, that is big for us.'
As usual, the defense will lead the way for the Colonels, which is to be expected when you move the coordinator of that group into the top job. Last year, the defense set a school record by allowing just 83.9 yards per game on the ground.
The Colonels led the FCS by allowing just six rushing touchdowns.
'We are going to be physical,' said Rybacki. 'That is our culture.'
Marsh, who had 40 tackles, forced two fumbles and had two interceptions last season, including one he returned for a 49-yard touchdown, said the defense has to be ready.
'All the fast guys got to be able to hit, and all the big guys got to be able to run,' Marsh said. 'We all have to get on the right page to get this thing turned around.'
Linebacker Jake Dalmado and defensive tackle Rasheed Lovelace were named to the Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-Americans. Loveland finished with 46 tackles while topping the Southland with nine sacks.
Nicholls struggled last year to a 4-8 record overall and just 2-5 in the Southland, good for just eighth place out of nine teams. That's not been the norm over the last decade.
On offense, the Colonels will turn to New Mexico State transfer Deuce Hogan to lead them at quarterback. He played in two games last year before being hurt.
Getting the offense to score will be the key to turning things around for Nicholls.

Big Ten reportedly 'floating' idea for massive College Football Playoff expansion

Double trouble? The Big Ten is reportedly looking to expand the College Football Playoff by at least double the teams. According to ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel, the Big Ten is "floating" the idea for a 24- or 28-team College Football Playoff. That would be at a minimum a doubling increase of the current number of teams in the College Football Playoff -- which is 12. According to the report from Thamel, the new proposed model would have these notable details: The FCS level currently plays with a 24 team playoff system, with the top eight teams receiving a first round bye. The potential FBS model mentioned in Thamel's report sounds similar if they were to move forward with the 24-team format. This idea has received plenty of push back and mockery on social media on Saturday, with some pointing to this model ruining the regular season of college football. But I'd argue this could potentially open door for more entertaining late game seasons. In my opinion, it would also reduce the number of opt outs as teams that normally landed in the Citrus Bowl or ReliaQuest Bowl would now be playing in the College Football Playoff. That would be a positive for the game. It'll be interesting to see if this idea gets any legs to it or if it dies after this "floating" by the Big Ten. A Canadian golf club is thriving after new path alleviated U.S. 'border issues'

A Canadian golf club has seen an uptick in play and interest after a small piece of land adjacent to the U.S. border was donated for a cart path. Aroostook Valley Country Club, a picturesque A.W. Tillinghast design, sits just along the eastern side of the international border between the state of Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick. For years, Canadian players would drive along north-south traveling Russell Road — which sits just a few feet inside the U.S. border — before exiting into a U.S. parking lot and then walking across an unpatrolled border to the Canadian course. The club welcomed players from both countries for decades, with golfers taking advantage of the area's relaxed border to play at their leisure. The membership was often about a 50-50 split between Americans and Canadians. After 9/11, however, U.S. Border Patrol began to monitor the region and those who tried to go back and forth freely were often stopped or even denied. Since the shoulder of the road was in Canadian territory, players would park at a Canadian parking lot, then drive along the side of Russell Road, an often treacherous path that flirted with oncoming traffic and did damage to the road's edge. Understandably, Canadian participation at the club dwindled. According to a story in the Portland Press Herald back in 2020, two-thirds of the club's Canadian players dropped out prior to the 2021 season. But finally, a solution has helped change the fortunes of the club. One home on the Canadian side of Russell Road, previously owned by Nickolaj and Marion Pedersen before their deaths, provided a bridge between the access road and the club. Mary Pedersen, a Canadian physician, decided to donate a strip of land to create a new path that will allow players to get back and forth without danger. According to a story at It created a happy ending for the tiny Canadian community of neighbors on this U.S. road. "We grew up together. It was heartbreaking seeing all that happen," Pedersen said of the 20-plus years of hassles. "I just feel really, really happy giving this land to them. I know Mum and Dad would have been extremely happy to see it." The club held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the trail with her and her son Mark in July. "It made all the difference for them to donate this land and be able to build this road and drive straight out to the club house," Lynn Dooling, the reigning women's champion at the club. "It's just been phenomenal." There are still issues to be fixed. Those along the U.S. side now have a tougher journey to get to the course. But the club is back in a better position than it was before the path was built. Americans, who used to make up about half of the club's membership, are now the ones who must cross the border through a legal checkpoint and take the long way around to the club. Stephen Leitch, the club manager and golf pro, said this has affected membership numbers among Maine residents near the club, but business is good for American green-fee golfers — visitors to the state who come up to experience the novelty of the course and its scenic location for a day or two. As he prepares for the club's centennial celebrations in 2029, Leitch said the oddity of the setting, and the unusual way of getting there, could become part of the appeal. "There's not that many places where you have to shuttle in to the golf course over that distance on a golf cart to play such a beautiful course," he said. "But when you come up over the hill after driving through that potato field, and you wonder to yourself, 'Where in the heck are we going,' and … you see this oasis, you say 'Oh, this is why,' and that's exactly what's happening. People are finding a charm in that."

Photo byHow to Watch Team USA vs. Sweden Date: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Time: 11:00 a.m. ET Channel: NHL Network Stream: Fubo (TRY FOR FREE) Making this matchup monumental is the fact that the United States was able to end Canada's three-year run of reaching the gold medal game of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, doing so by winning in a shootout to qualify for the final of this prestigious event. Team USA is 3-1 in the tournament, while Sweden is 4-0. The final will take place at the Pavol Demira Ice Stadium in beautiful Trenčín, Slovakia. Like the U.S., Sweden also had a razor-tight win in the semifinal, defeating Finland in overtime to reach this matchup with the American U-18 ice hockey team. The U.S., despite boasting a strong team, hadn't played in the final of this event since 2016. Even worse, the Americans haven't won a gold medal in this tournament since 2003, making Sunday's game huge for Team USA. Sweden, likewise, hasn't won this tournament in quite some time, last winning gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournament in 2007. It hasn't played in the championship game since 2022, either, setting up a huge matchup between two countries hungry for a monumental win on Saturday. Team USA nearly blew its opportunity to reach the gold medal game in its matchup against Canada. The United States had a two-goal third-period lead before heading into overtime. The goal scorers for the Americans in the win over Canada were Luke Puchner, Blake Zielinski, and Noah Davidson. Sweden defeated Finland 6-5 in the semifinal, meanwhile, in large part thanks to a hat trick scored by Marcus Nordmark. Axel Elofsson, meanwhile, scored two goals in the win for Sweden.
