‘We create our own reality and are Test champions now': South Africa coach Shukri Conrad
South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad has stated that the team's triumph in the World Test Championship final shows that they are as good as any team in the world in the longest format of the game even if they may not have the financial might. South Africa beat defending champions Australia by six wickets at a time when their Test future was becoming a topic of conversation. 'If you have a Test team that is strong and plays regularly, that has spin-offs for the other formats,' Conrad told reporters. 'When you have a good test team, you'll have good teams in (white ball cricket) because a good player is a good player.' South Africa were considered the underdogs ahead of the final, largely due to Australia's pedigree to win big titles and their own rather infamous record in big matches of tournaments. Their victory ended a nearly three-decade trophy drought despite the country producing some all-time greats in the intervening period. 'We don't feel like underdogs and we believe we are one of the top teams in the world,' said Conrad. 'We may not have played Australia and England in the league phase (of the World Test Championship) but we played Australia in the final and would not have had it any other way. 'We feel we belong at the main table. (Being underdogs) was never a conversation in our team meetings. Everyone dubbed Australia as favourites, perhaps on the back of their experience more than anything else. But we create our own reality and are the test champions now,' he said. The Cape Town international airport was packed to the rafters for three tiers as Temba Bavuma's Proteas landed home after winning the World Test Championship. In a chaotic reception, the trophy-winning South Africans were stopped every few metres as Marco Jansen signed every single autograph request and 'OH Temba Bavuma' choruses rung with the whole airport joining in after the cricket team broke the dark spell of 27 years.

South Africa receive huge welcome home after first ICC win in 27 years: 'Haven't seen people like that at airport before'
South Africa returned home to a grand welcome after winning the 2023-25 WTC final, which ended a 27-year ICC trophy drought. South Africa defeated Australia by 5 wickets to lift their first ICC title since 1998. read more The South African cricket team returned home to a hero's welcome on Wednesday morning after winning the 2023-25 edition of the World Test Championship (WTC). This is their first ICC title in 27 years, and hence the celebrations. The team landed at Johannesburg airport, where they were greeted by a massive crowd of fans, including South Africa's sports minister and CSA officials. South Africa receive hero's welcome This emotional reception came just four days after their historic five-wicket win over Australia in the WTC final at Lord's, London. It was a moment the South African team and their fans had been waiting for since they last lifted an ICC title in 1998, which was the Champions Trophy. The Temba Bavuma-led side was seen wearing their new 'Champions' t-shirts when they landed home. Speaking at a press conference, Bavuma said he was overwhelmed by the love and support from everyone back home. Bavuma admitted that he had never seen so many people coming to cheer for the team at the airport before. 'It is quite overwhelming. We haven't seen people like that at the airport before. As players, you don't really realise what you've done but when you start to interact with people and see the emotion, it gives you a proper insight into what we've done. We are proud as a team but we are even more happy and proud that we've made our people proud,' Bavuma said. Bavuma also spoke about how the team achieved their victory in the South African way. 'If you look at this team and the guys at the helm, we have done it the proper South African way. That's unique to this group. We have embraced everything that it means to be South African,' he added. They had nine different players who won Player of the Match awards between 2023 and 2025, and 15 players either scored a century or took five wickets. In the final against Australia, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, and David Bedingham contributed with the bat after Kagiso Rabada-led bowling attack did their job with the ball. South Africa's long wait for an ICC trophy had become a painful tale, with heartbreaking losses in many key matches over the years, including the 1999 ODI World Cup semi-final and the 2024 T20 World Cup final. However, Bavuma and his men have finally rewritten the history books for the Proteas.

England Allrounder Wary Of India's Depth: 'Virat-Rohit Massive Losses But...'
Last Updated: England's Brydon Carse has warned against complacency despite Kohli and Rohit's absence, as India field a strong XI for the Headingley Test. England allrounder Brydon Carse has said that while Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are huge losses for India's batting lineup, India have immense talent and will bring in their best XI for the Headingley Test, and hence, there is no space to be complacent while facing a new-look India. Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from Tests in May, after which, the BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain, keeping the future in mind. Now, Gill, with his deputy Rishabh Pant by his side, will have to lead India against England in a crucial five-match series, which marks the beginning of their 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. 'Look, you know, Virat and Sharma are massive losses for their batting line-up. They've been experienced players over several years and, you know, world-class batters," Carse said while speaking to the media two days ahead of the Headingley Test. 'But the depth that Indian cricket has and the quality and players coming through, you know, they will, without a doubt, put up a very strong 11 and we're ready for whatever challenge that brings," Carse added. The series begins in Leeds on Friday. The England allrounder, with a quick-arm action, said that their bowling attack will look to take advantage of a bit of inexperience in the Indian lineup, depending on the nature of the tracks. 'Yeah, look, I mean, they're quality players. Again, you know, depending on what the surface plays like. I think any batter that you're bowling at, you know, with a new ball or their first 20 balls, is susceptible to getting out," Carse said. 'So, whenever we have an opportunity at any of their top-order batters, we'll have plans and processes in place to knock them over as quickly as we can," Carse added. Carse missed the Champions Trophy earlier this year after being ruled out of the tournament because of a toe injury, but he has recovered from that in the intervening period. England will head into the Headingley Test with one of their least experienced bowling attack in recent memory, with James Anderson retired and the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood injured.
