England Allrounder Wary Of India's Depth: 'Virat-Rohit Massive Losses But...'
Last Updated:
England's Brydon Carse has warned against complacency despite Kohli and Rohit's absence, as India field a strong XI for the Headingley Test.
England allrounder Brydon Carse has said that while Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are huge losses for India's batting lineup, India have immense talent and will bring in their best XI for the Headingley Test, and hence, there is no space to be complacent while facing a new-look India.
Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from Tests in May, after which, the BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain, keeping the future in mind.
Now, Gill, with his deputy Rishabh Pant by his side, will have to lead India against England in a crucial five-match series, which marks the beginning of their 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
'Look, you know, Virat and Sharma are massive losses for their batting line-up. They've been experienced players over several years and, you know, world-class batters," Carse said while speaking to the media two days ahead of the Headingley Test.
'But the depth that Indian cricket has and the quality and players coming through, you know, they will, without a doubt, put up a very strong 11 and we're ready for whatever challenge that brings," Carse added.
The series begins in Leeds on Friday. The England allrounder, with a quick-arm action, said that their bowling attack will look to take advantage of a bit of inexperience in the Indian lineup, depending on the nature of the tracks.
'Yeah, look, I mean, they're quality players. Again, you know, depending on what the surface plays like. I think any batter that you're bowling at, you know, with a new ball or their first 20 balls, is susceptible to getting out," Carse said.
'So, whenever we have an opportunity at any of their top-order batters, we'll have plans and processes in place to knock them over as quickly as we can," Carse added.
Carse missed the Champions Trophy earlier this year after being ruled out of the tournament because of a toe injury, but he has recovered from that in the intervening period.
England will head into the Headingley Test with one of their least experienced bowling attack in recent memory, with James Anderson retired and the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood injured.

FIH Hockey Pro League: India women draws 2-2 with Argentina, suffers shootout defeat
After a gruelling 2–2 draw, the Indian Women's Hockey team missed out on the bonus point, going down 0–2 to Argentina in the shootout at the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 match at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London on Wednesday. Navneet Kaur and Deepika scored in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, pulling India back from a two-goal deficit. This came after Agustina Gorzelany's brace (27', 37') had given Argentina a comfortable lead. Neither of the experienced sides managed to test the goalkeepers in the opening quarter. Argentina's high press restricted the Indian attack, but India found space through quick stick work and sharp passing, frequently looking to fire the ball into the circle. Sharmila Devi made a promising run into the circle early on but was forced out of bounds by the Argentine defence, while Sunelita Toppo made a shrewd interception and surged forward, only to see the ball go out of play. Despite Argentina's organised defensive structure, India ended the first half with nearly twice as many circle entries. In the second quarter, Argentina's Victoria Miranda made a powerful injection into the final third from midfield, but a crucial touch from Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke took care of the threat. ALSO READ | Indian junior women's hockey team ends tour of Europe with loss against Netherlands Argentina converted its first penalty corner of the night when Gorzelany struck cleanly to give her side a 1–0 lead in the 27th minute. The third quarter began with India under sustained pressure in its own half. Argentina's wide play stretched the Indian defence, but India managed to win its fourth penalty corner in the 35th minute. Manisha's thunderous strike was blocked by Valentina Raposo, and Navneet followed up with another powerful shot just seconds later but was once again denied by Cosentino. Argentina continued to make the most of its set-pieces, with Gorzelany converting yet another penalty corner in the 37th minute to double its lead. Victoria Granatto nearly made it 3–0 from close range, but Indian goalkeeper Savita produced a courageous save to keep India in contention. Deepika nearly pulled one back with an electric shot from just outside the circle, but Cosentino reacted sharply to parry the ball away. India was finally rewarded for its persistence in the final quarter. In the 50th minute, Navneet made a skillful run after receiving the ball on the edge of the circle. She beat a defender and smashed it into the back of the net to bring India back into the contest at 1–2. India pushed forward in search of an equaliser in the closing minutes and earned a penalty corner with less than five minutes on the clock. Deepika was on target yet again, scoring from the set-piece to level the score and complete India's fightback. Following the 2-2 deadlock at full time, both teams competed in a shootout for the bonus point. India couldn't find the back of the net while Brisa Bruggesser and Sophia Cairo scored against Savita.

Gill, the new No 4 for India
CHENNAI: The No. 4 position in Test cricket is the format's holy grail. Sure, there were a few great pre-War No. 4s (Denis Compton and Wally Hammond) but the idea of a No. 4 being one of the side's best bats was a more modern phenomenon with its roots around the late 1980s. Sachin Tendulkar is of course the gold standard. He scored 13,492 runs in that position, almost 4000 clear of Mahela Jayawardene another giant who had made the No. 4 his postcode for 15 years. Out of the top 13 run-scorers in the format's history, seven have had an extended run in that position. From an Indian perspective, the No. 4 has played a big role in multiple ways. Batsmanship, leadership, charismatic figures, the biggest egos in the room as well as tasked with the role of selling all kinds of consumer goods to the hoi polloi. Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Gundappa Viswanath, Dilip Vengsarkar... India's batting royalty have all featured in this position. In fact, in India's maiden Test back in 1932, the captain was somebody who came out to bat at No. 4. CK Nayudu, an Indian cricketing aristocrat who wore several hats. This crash course in the history of the No. 4 is a roundabout way of saying why Shubman Gill is the next cab of the No. 4 rank. "I think there's still a discussion going on for No. 3," vice-captain Rishabh Pant said in a press conference two days before the beginning of the five-match Test series against England on Friday. "But No. 4 and No. 5 are fixed. Shubman is going to bat at No. 4, and I'm going to stay at No. 5 as of now." There is one big difference, though, between Shubman and almost everybody who made the No. 4 their own. Most of the others weren't in leadership roles when they assumed the No. 4. They were all fairly early into their careers. They didn't have the pressure of expectation on their shoulders when they were asked to walk out at No. 4.
