Brackley sights fixed on automatic promotion

BBC News17-04-2025

Brackley Town defender Zak Lilly hopes they can take play-offs out of the equation and win automatic promotion this season. The Saints reached the National League North play-offs in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024 without going up.They are currently third in the table, but below Kidderminster Harriers on goal difference only and with just a single point to make up on leaders Scunthorpe United."It's what everyone at the club has been dreaming of for the past couple of years," Lilly told BBC Radio Northampton."I know it's been play-off after play-off and it would be a big relief if we just won it outright. That's what we want to do, everyone's got the common goal. "We just need to make sure that we win our games and then we'll see what happens."Lilly has made 37 appearances this season, scoring once, helping Brackley win 26 of their 43 games under boss Gavin Cowan. They are at home to Oxford City on Friday, followed by a trip to Leamington on Monday, and then finish the campaign by taking on bottom club Farsley Celtic in front of their own fans."We're going to try and win our last three games. We're going to focus on ourselves and if we don't manage to come top, at least we'll have some good form going into the play-offs," said Lilly."I've been playing in this league nine or 10 years and that's the main thing I want to achieve, get a promotion."It's a big achievement, there's some really good teams in the league and to come out on top would really say something." Lilly joined Brackley in the summer of 2023 following a spell with Hereford and was in the squad last season when they beat Scunthorpe in the play-off semi-finals, only to then lose 2-1 to Boston United, who were promoted. He added: "If you don't step up, you're going to be left out. When you play with better players, you always play better. And that is the case (here) because everyone at Brackley is really good."

Josh is using his knowledge to help North Wales Crusaders

Eaves has been a key part of the set-up this season at Crusaders, helping the side to occupy a lofty position in the League One standings with half of the season now completed. He has formed a strong bond with club colleague Joe Baldwin and Eaves is imparting all the knowledge he has picked up over the course of his career to date. Eaves told CruCast: 'Obviously, Baldy's only a young lad. I've been in similar positions to Baldy. 'I've been privileged and lucky enough to learn off the best hooker for five years when I was at Saints in James Roby and I had Keiron Cunningham as a coach for a year. 'I've played at Leigh on dual-reg with Mickey Higham. So, I've had experience with probably three of the best hookers there's been, but I've also played with other hookers. 'So, I've been like a sponge in my early career. Obviously, I am getting on now, coming up for 28 in a few months, but just it's about passing that experience, that knowledge, that understanding of the game down to Joe and what can I say about Baldy? 'Obviously, he's probably not happy with the minutes he's getting. But, what I can tell you, he trains the absolute house down. 'He's probably one of the best trainers and when he comes on, he does his job. He doesn't overplay. 'He just does his job. So, he's been really good.' Baldwin began his playing career at Orrell St James as a junior, before he was signed by Wigan Warriors in 2019. He gained valuable experience with the Super League champions, prior to making the move to North Wales in 2024. Making an impact within Carl Forster's side, Baldwin became a key figure towards the back end of last season, picking up the young player of the year accolade at the club's end of season awards. While Eaves is helping Baldwin on his journey, the opposite is also the case. Eaves added: 'Obviously, pre-season, guiding him if you want to say. But, also he pushes me, obviously, because I used to be that young, fit lad running about the field, winning every concession. 'But, now he's there, I'm trying to keep up with him and that. It's a good little competition, but we also have a good relationship off the field. 'We're quite close off the field. He's always sitting next to me on the bus, robs my sweets and that! 'But, we do have a close relationship.' Anther big weekend is in the offing for North Wales Crusaders in League One. Crusaders are leading the way in the standings and they play host to second-placed Midlands Hurricanes on Sunday.

Stevie May becomes FOURTH ex-St Johnstone player signing up for Livingston's Premiership campaign

Livingston's St Johnstone-themed summer recruitment strategy is gathering pace, with the newly-promoted team signing Stevie May on a permanent contract. The Perth great was a regular on loan in the Championship, with his role changing to impact sub towards the end of the campaign. David Martindale saw enough in May, who scored 10 goals in 46 appearances, to persuade him to offer a permanent switch to West Lothian after he was released by Saints last month. That deal means that there will be at least four ex-Saints at Almondvale. Ryan McGowan was one of Livingston's promotion stars, with Graham Carey and Connor McLennan both signing this week. May's legendary status at McDiarmid Park is assured. He inspired Saints to their first Scottish Cup triumph in 2014. Then, in his second spell at the club he was part of the 2021 double-winning squad.

Tony Fitzpatrick tips St Mirren ace for Scotland call-up after strong campaign

The Buddies icon has had a final look back on the 2024-25 term and believes one player deserves international recognition. Tony Fitzpatrick says it is clear St Mirren are progressing every year under Stephen Robinson. And the Buddies icon feels his club is continuing to move in the right direction – both on and off the pitch. ‌ The former Saints player, manager and chief executive believes that the upturn in results, performances and expectations since Robinson joined in 2022 is not a coincidence. ‌ Throughout this season's Premiership campaign, the Buddies were able to score more goals, have more shots on target and also create more chances from a dangerous position than in the previous two seasons. Reflecting on the season himself, Fitzpatrick says he agrees with Robbo that it was successful after a third straight top-six finish was secured. 'Getting in the top six for me is a success,' he told Paisley Daily Express Sport. 'A wee bit of disappointment at this point because last year was the European celebrations. 'But I think it was successful, especially after losing players, and there were a lot of things going on. 'To get in the top six, be eight points behind and taking it to the last minutes of the season for that Euro spot [was an amazing effort]. So, for me, as soon as St Mirren got in the top six, it was a success.' Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick has saluted the Paisley Daily Express' selections for player of the year and young player of the year. ‌ Skipper Mark O'Hara gets our nod for player of the year for a great campaign which saw him lead with quiet authority, mix it in the middle of the park and be a goal threat. On-loan Crystal Palace midfielder Phillips gets the young player of the year recognition – those aged 23 and under at the beginning of the season are eligible – for his all-action performances. Phillips made his Republic of Ireland debut on Friday night in Dublin against Senegal but Fitzpatrick reckons O'Hara deserved a shout for Scotland in the friendlies with Iceland and Liechtenstein. ‌ He said: 'When you look at the midfield, I think players have improved immensely. I thought [Caolan] Boyd-Munce improved as a footballer last season. I think with Mark, you know what you are going to get all the time as he is a top player. 'Killian got his call-up with [Jonah] Ayunga, [Mikael] Mandron, and so on, all improving under Stephen and his coaching team. 'I'm a wee bit disappointed this year with Mark never getting called up to the Scotland squad. I look at Scotland's midfield and they're looking for different types of players. ‌ 'I know it's great to see the young boy [Lennon] Miller getting in but Mark had a spell in the season where he could have been there.' Buddies boss Robinson has indicated that he wants six signings this summer – and Fitzpatrick has no worries when it comes to head of recruitment Martin Foyle identifying top talent. He added: 'I'm sure Stephen, as a manager, wants that real core of players that will bring success and just add to it. 'And Martin should get a lot of great credit for unearthing a lot of these players. He's done a fantastic job in the recruitment.'
