Former Carlisle United prospect makes non-league switch

Former Carlisle United prospect Cameron Salkeld has made FA Trophy finalists Spennymoor Town his latest destination. The midfielder has joined the National League North club ahead of the 2025/26 season. Advertisement It follows his departure from fellow sixth-tier club Darlington. Salkeld, who came through the youth side at Carlisle and made two first-team appearances, scoring once, had been with Darlo for the last two years. Now he makes the switch to another north east outfit. Spennymoor boss Graeme Lee has welcomed the arrival of the former Blue to the Brewery Field. 'The way Cam plays the game suits us down to the ground,' said Lee in a club statement. 'I've said it numerous times that we're at our best when we play with real intensity, and Cam does that with his work rate and the distances he covers during games. Advertisement 'He is full of running, has great ability, good experience and can play in a few different roles so he's someone we're delighted to be adding to our squad for 2025/26.' Salkeld's two senior outings for Carlisle came in the EFL Trophy under Keith Curle in the 2016/17 campaign. He made his debut at 17 as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers' Under-21s in October 2016 before, a month later, coming off the bench to score in a 4-2 win over Fleetwood Town. He also impressed for United's youth team as they reached the fourth round in the same season. He moved on from Carlisle in 2018 and has since had spells at Gateshead, Greenock Morton, Ayr United and Clyde before joining Darlington in 2023. Spennymoor finished ninth in National League North last season as well as reaching the FA Trophy final, where they lost 3-0 to Aldershot Town at Wembley.

Former Carlisle United No2 lands non-league manager job

Former Carlisle United assistant boss Ian Watson has landed a non-league managerial role. He has been appointed boss of National League North club South Shields. The move sees Watson leave his coaching position at League Two club MK Dons. The 39-year-old replaces Elliott Dickman at the sixth-tier club. Watson had been part of Mike Williamson's coaching team at Brunton Park from last September. He remained at the club for a short period after Williamson's February sacking but then left early into Mark Hughes' tenure. Watson duly returned to MK Dons, having previously worked there alongside Williamson, as part of interim boss Ben Gladwin's caretaker side. The former Gateshead coach now moves into the hotseat for the first time at a club who finished 17th in National League North last season. South Shields described north east native Watson as "one of the brightest and most progressive young coaches in the country". "His track record and experience are exceptional, and I'm excited to see the progress the team will make under his leadership. "His appointment reflects our continued ambition to drive this club forward. This is just the first of many exciting developments on the horizon." South Shields said Watson emerged as their top choice after the vacancy attracted more than 50 applicants. South Shields FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Ian Watson as our new Men's First Team Manager. Welcome to the Mariners, Ian ⚓️#SSFC #AlwaysReady — South Shields FC (@SouthShieldsFC) May 28, 2025 Sporting director Lee Picton added: "It's not just the calibre of his football and coaching brain that excites me, it's his abilities as a leader and a standard setter that make him the ideal appointment for SSFC in my opinion. "He also has a proven track record in operating very shrewdly in the transfer market, while adding enormous value to players who are already in the building. Hughes: Carlisle United will be 'cup final' for National League rivals "Despite 50+ applications from all over the world for the role, Ian quickly became our number one choice due to his outstanding skill set, highly aligned values, along with proven on-field results and we are delighted to get him on board with us to help facilitate our next stage of growth as a club." South Shields' squad includes the former Carlisle loan midfielder Martin Smith. Another ex-Blue, former Brunton Park youth defender Dillon Morse, was released by the club this summer. MK Dons, who recently appointed Paul Warne as their new boss, wished Watson well with sporting director Liam Sweeting - who almost joined Carlisle last season - saying: "His connection with the players and his genuine passion for this club were evident every single day. "While we would have loved for him to stay with us, he starts his own journey of leadership, and I very much look forward to watching this next chapter of his career. 'As we often see, good people join our journey and really connect with this club – Busty [Watson] certainly did that. I thank him for all his efforts during his time with us.'

English football club forced to share stadium with rival team 17 miles away after £3million worth of pitch damage

SCARBOROUGH Athletic have been forced to groundshare with Yorkshire rivals Bridlington Town. The non-league outfit will temporarily host home games 17 miles away after £3million worth of pitch damage was discovered. 1 Scarborough 's postseason plans went up in smoke after a site survey found serious structural issues with the pitch at the town's Sports Village. But Bridlington, who play in the ninth tier, have agreed for the Seadogs to share their pitch until it's sorted out. The club confirmed Scarborough, who player higher up in the sixth tier, would not be charged for use of the stadium. North Yorkshire Council own the ground and said the new pitch could cost more than £3million to repair. The club's artificial 3G pitch was due to be replaced after the final home game on April 21, in time for the start of next season. But a pitch inspection found that extensive work is needed before the turf can be resurfaced. Scarborough chairman Trevor Bull said he was "talking to several parties about making bus and train services available" for fans. The club are working on a financial plan in case they needed to play the full season at their temporary home. The National League North side will face a "shortfall" from missing out on matchday revenue streams including food and drink sales, hospitality packages, shop sales and an expected drop in attendance. At Bridlington, the ground will require extra work to ensure it is "step two compliant" in accordance with FA Guidelines for stadium regulations. Scarborough finished 13th last season, while Bridlington avoided relegation after coming 18th in the Northern East Counties.
