Chester boss delighted to have retained play-off finalists

Leader Live18-07-2025
The Blues, who made it all the way through to last season's National League North play-off final, will continue their preparations for the forthcoming season with tomorrow's match-up with League Two Salford City at the Deva Stadium.
Chester have retained much of their squad from a successful campaign and this has pleased team boss McIntyre.
He told Chester FC TV: 'Naturally, the nature of this level, the season comes to an end.
'It's not a transfer window, but the recruitment opportunities in the summer, that's been really unique this year and we've felt that it was really important to retain the core group that got to a play-off final.
'We were able to retain nine of the starting XI, with one returning to a loan club in the Premier League and the other player, obviously, moving on into league football for a fee.
'But we're quite clear about what we wanted to add and the work to do that is pretty consistent. But, then this time of year comes around where you get your group together, you continue to assemble it and the work starts on the training ground.
'Now, I enjoy the work, I enjoy being on the training pitch, I enjoy working with the staff, especially the players. So, raring to go!'
Chester have opened their pre-season campaign with a win and a loss.
The triumph came in midweek via a 2-1 verdict versus Runcorn Linnets, following a 3-1 defeat to Bury.
Dylan Mottley-Henry, Oskar Rosenblatt and Connor Woods have shared Chester's goals so far, the latter being set up by Declan Weeks.

The Blues have been on another big spending spree this summer, with £60million Joao Pedro among a number of signings that have swollen the current first-team squad to an incredible 47 players. Stamford Bridge chiefs are close to selling striker Armando Broja and midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu - two of the players who do not appear on the website - to Burnley. But in addition to Academy graduates Broja and Alfie Gilchrist, there are seven players including Ugochukwu who cost Chelsea a combined total of more than £200m who have no profile on the website - despite still officially being at the club. Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who is facing a ban for failings a drugs test, DOES still have a profile pic - albeit wearing last season's kit. Add in the six players already sent out on loan, and the Blues have a huge number of players - and agents - to juggle. And that's before they make further signings, with both RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons and Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho still in their sights. Midfielder Carney Chuwuemeka came from Villa in 2022 for an initial £15m and has returned to the training ground after spending six months at Borussia Dortmund. Likewise midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, a £23.5m signing from Strasbourg in 2023, is into his third week working at Cobham after coming back from a season-long stay at Southampton. Of the Chelsea players who went out on loan last season, Renato Veiga probably did the most to enhance his value, during a six-month spell at Juventus. But the Portugal international, whose proposed big money move to Atletico Madrid appears to have collapsed, did not do enough to earn a spot on the Blues' website.
