Western Pennsylvania native among the Monster Jam drivers coming to PPG Paints Arena
One of the longest-tenured Valentine's Day traditions in the Pittsburgh area is when Monster Jam comes to PPG Paints Arena. One of their most experienced drivers, Tony Ochs, is always excited when that time comes.
Ochs is a Clarion County native who lives there with his wife and two daughters. He says he never imagined being a Monster Jam driver growing up, but he got all the preparation he needed living in his hometown, where Monster Jam has a massive following.
"We've grown up riding dirt bikes, ATVs, snowmobiles, all that off-road stuff," Ochs said. "I grew up on a farm as well, operating tractors on my grandpa's farm, and actually, I learned how to drive my first truck at 4-and-a-half years old to haul hay bales on my grandpa's farm, so it's a huge deal."
Ochs served in the U.S. Army as a certified Apache helicopter technician. After four combat deployments and five overseas tours, he left the military and began working as a stunt motorcycle crew chief for Marvel Universe Live!, a subsidiary of Feld Entertainment, the same company that owns Monster Jam.
Then one day, the opportunity to drive for Monster Jam presented itself, and it was too perfect for him to pass up.
"I never thought about it until I started talking to the people at Monster Jam, and they were developing a 'Soldier Fortune Black Ops' truck, a military tribute truck," he said. "What better fit than a military veteran? So, they actually gave me a test drive, and the rest was history."
Ochs drove the "Soldier Fortune Black Ops" truck for more than six years. Then, in 2023, he became one of the first drivers to compete in the "ThunderROARus" truck, which he now drives. Nearly a decade into his Monster Jam career, Ochs still relishes the opportunity to compete in his own backyard.
"Anytime that you have to perform in front of the hometown crowd, the pressure's on," he said. "You want to win. You want to put on a great spectacle for them because it's a lot different for a spectator when they know the person who's driving the Monster Jam truck, and it just adds that much more excitement. So, the pressure's on, the family's going to be here all weekend long, and hopefully, we come out with a win."
Ochs says he expects a big contingent from Clarion County to be at PPG Paints Arena cheering him on this weekend, but it's even more special to compete on Valentine's Day weekend with his family there to see him.
"I can't think of a better Valentine's date than Monster Jam," he said. "I was looking back at the highlights from the last time I was here, and just looking at the highlight from me on the Jumbotron, saying 'Happy Valentine's Day' to my beautiful wife and daughters, and I can't wait to do it again this weekend."
Ochs will be in action with Monster Jam from Friday night until Sunday afternoon. Tickets at PPG Paints Arena are still available.

Questions still remain, but WVU baseball has interesting potential for 2026
MORGANTOWN — Three years ago, Logan Sauve enrolled at West Virginia as the top-ranked prep catcher from Pennsylvania. Sam White actually turned down the opportunity at a professional hockey career in Canada to play college baseball. The most successful season in WVU baseball history did not begin with a 4-2 win against Jacksonville on Valentine's Day in 2025. Instead, WVU's Steve Sabins, who wrapped up his first season as head coach with a 44-16 record and a trip to the super regionals, said it was a process. WVU FINAL STATS 'What we were able to do this season was a compilation of effort, for me, over the last decade,' Sabins said. 'The snapshot of the last two years, for me, is not accurate, although they've been the most successful two years in program history. It's been a lot of work by a lot of great people over the course of 10 to 15 years.' What did that process involve? In short, it was a collection of having things spin the right way over a long period of time, whether that was through recruiting battles, the transfer portal, the MLB draft and the development of WVU's players. 'I would say that I want us to be remembered as a great group of young men who worked every day to become the best players we could become,' Sauve said. 'I think that translates to the performance we put on the field this year. Playing in back-to-back super regionals is something I never envisioned happening in this program.' The obvious question is what's next, a difficult one to answer in the moments following the Mountaineers' 12-5 loss to LSU, which eliminated WVU from the NCAA tournament in the round of 16 for a second consecutive season. Still, Sabins took a stab at it. 'There's been more exponential growth over the last 10 years, maybe more so than any program in the nation,' he said. In other words, there are no expectations this was the end of an era for the Mountaineers. The steps taken toward the 2026 season begins a month from now, when the MLB draft begins July 13. As of now, there is no WVU player ranked among the top 200 prospects for the draft, which constitutes enough players to cover the first five rounds and compensation selections. The draft does stretch 20 rounds over the course of three days, and it will be the totality of the draft that will provide the first clues as to what the 2026 roster will look like. Players like White, Sauve and Skylar King could all be selected in the later rounds, but all would have the option of returning for their senior season. Then there are some hard-throwing pitchers such as Carson Estridge and Robby Porco, who would have the same options. It's possible WVU could have all or none of those players returning next season. Pitchers Griffin Kirn and Jack Kartsonas are out of eligibility. Kirn and Kartsonas were the top two starters by the end of the season. Weekend starter Gavin Van Kempen announced he was entering the transfer portal on Tuesday. The school's all-time home run leader, Grant Hussey, as well as outfielders Kyle West and Jace Rineart are also out of eligibility. That's a combined 27 home runs and 126 RBIs that needs replacing for next season. Senior shortstop Brodie Kresser has a season of eligibility remaining. He did not walk during the team's Senior Day festivities, but there's been no word if he will return to college. He was third on the team with 41 RBIs this season. Then there are underclassmen such as Armani Guzman and Gavin Kelly, who may be the foundation of the team's offense next season. Kelly was an all-Big 12 freshman after hitting .299 with 37 RBIs. Guzman was named the MVP of the Clemson Regional and batted .327 with 22 RBIs. On the mound, sophomore Chase Meyer and his blazing 97 miles-per-hour fastball makes him a top returner. He finished 9-2 this season with a 3.94 ERA. Lefty Maxx Yehl is also expected to return next season after sitting out this season following Tommy John surgery. He was 2-0 with a 3.99 ERA in 2024. What also is known is WVU's 2025 recruiting class is ranked 36th in the nation by Perfect Game — fourth among Big 12 schools — and includes a healthy dose of high school pitchers and infielders. Canadian pitcher Ben Goodacre, Michigan pitcher Wyatt Mosley and South Carolina shortstop Zahir Barjam will be some of the incoming freshmen to keep an eye on for next season.

Dennis Lehane Roasts ‘Draft Dodger' Trump's $45 Million Birthday Parade as ‘Height of Performative Masculinity'
Novelist and 'Black Bird' creator Dennis Lehane went off script Tuesday to call out Donald Trump's $45 million military parade Saturday commemorating the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary — and, yes, the president's June 14 birthday. He called the spectacle 'the height of performative masculinity.' Speaking to TheWrap for his new Apple TV+ project, 'Smoke,' the acclaimed author ('Gone, Baby, Gone,' 'Mystic River,' 'Shutter Island') briefly weighed in on Trump's antics, calling him a draft dodger and even comparing the president to a 'whiny little bitch' character from the new series. 'I usually steer away from politics,' Lehane said, bringing up the topic himself, 'but let's just say, on one very simple issue, to be a draft dodger who's trying to throw yourself a military birthday parade is the height of performative masculinity. I don't even know where to go with that. We've literally met the death of irony.' Trump is rolling out a military parade on Saturday to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. army — and it also happens to fall on his 79th birthday. An Army spokesperson said that the parade is expected to cost upwards of $45 million. On Tuesday, amid reports that protests against the parade are being planned online, the Trump told White House reporters, 'And if there's any protester that wants to come out, they will be met with very big force.' Lehane's comments sprang out of a discussion of the tightly wound arson investigator Dave Gudsen in 'Smoke,' played by Taron Egerton, reuniting with the creator after 'Black Bird.' Lehane explained, 'Taron and I wanted to get at that with Dave. He's so unempathetic, and yet he's such a whiny little sentimental bitch when it comes to his own needs.' In the series, which premieres with its first two episodes June 27, Dave is frustrated by being assigned a female partner (Jurnee Smollett) he never asked for to track down two serial arsonists. 'Taron and I are both fascinated by performative masculinity. It's just an interesting phenomenon that we're starting to see the worst end result of right now. We're living in it,' Lehane continued. Dave also clashes with his apathetic teenage stepson, who's made it clear David will never live up to his own father. 'That's what Dave Gudsen represents in a lot of ways. When he says to his wife, 'The kid just needs to f–king man up.' And she says, 'Oh, we're here for some truth?'' 'Some people are always like that. The people who were always like, 'Why should I feel anything for anybody?' are always the whiniest bitches,' Lehane said. 'Smoke' premieres with two episodes on June 27 and airs new episodes Fridays. Check back later for TheWrap's full interview with Lehane.
