Haryana CM Saini pays tribute to Swami Kalyandev Maharaj on his 21st death anniversary
Addressing the gathering of devotees on Monday, CM Nayab Singh Saini said, 'Today we have assembled on the sacred land of Maharishi Shukdev, situated on the holy banks of Maa Ganga. Bhagwat Peeth Shri Shukdev Ashram holds a special place in our hearts. This ashram is not only a spiritual center but also a symbol of education, service, and culture. The statue of Swami Ji will serve as a lasting inspiration, reminding future generations of his noble deeds, principles, and ideals.' CM Saini said that Swami Omanand Ji Maharaj is carrying forward the rich tradition of this ashram and, by following the path shown by Maharishi Shukdev Ji, is engaged in selfless social service with a spirit of devotion. Under Swami Ji's guidance, the ashram has made remarkable contributions in the fields of education, healthcare, and rural development. He further said that it was on this very land, thousands of years ago, that Maharishi Shukdev Ji Maharaj guided King Parikshit towards salvation by narrating the sacred Bhagwat Katha. 'Saint Kalyandev Maharaj dedicated his entire life to upholding and preserving the sanctity of this great pilgrimage site,' CM Saini said. Although born into a humble family, Swami Kalyandev Ji Maharaj's thoughts and actions were extraordinary. He renounced worldly attachments at an early age and embraced a life of spiritual pursuit. This sacred land is the Tapobhoomi (land of penance) of a great saint, visionary educator, and social reformer.
The Chief Minister stated that Swami Kalyan Dev Ji dedicated his 129-year-long life to the pursuit of knowledge, education, and selfless social service, which he regarded as his true religion. This revered saint attained samadhi in the year 2004.
'Throughout his life, he established numerous schools, colleges, and Gurukuls to promote education. In addition to his contributions to education, Swami Ji actively opposed untouchability, caste discrimination, and other social evils, spreading a powerful message of love, equality, and brotherhood. In recognition of his exceptional and selfless service to society, the Government of India honoured Swami Kalyandev Ji Maharaj with the Padma Shri in 1982 and the Padma Bhushan in 2000,' he said. The Haryana CM said that the Swami Kalyan Dev Seva Trust has been established within the ashram to carry forward the legacy of service and compassion. 'Through various welfare initiatives, the trust extends support to the poor, the sick, and the underprivileged. It is actively engaged in the fields of education, healthcare, and social upliftment,' Nayab Saini said.
CM Saini urged everyone to take a pledge to contribute towards building the India envisioned by Swami Ji.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister also released an Odia book on Shukdev Tirtha. He also announced a grant of Rs 11 lakh for the construction of Haryana Bhawan at Shukdev Tirtha. On this occasion, Swami Omanand Ji Maharaj, in his address, praised the humble nature and compassionate approach of CM Saini.
He said, 'The Chief Minister shares a long-standing association with Shukdev Ashram. Swami Ji reflected on India's rich saintly tradition, stating that saints have played a pivotal role not only in awakening spiritual consciousness but also in advancing education, healthcare, and social upliftment across the country.'
He said that the life of CM Saini is a reflection of strong moral values and unwavering dedication to public service. Citing the inspiring lives of Lord Buddha and Swami Vivekananda Ji, Swami Omanand emphasised that their devotion to the service of humanity should serve as a guiding light for all of us. He urged everyone to draw inspiration from their ideals and incorporate their values into daily life. On this occasion, Haryana Cabinet Minister Dr Arvind Sharma, Chairman of Shukdev Ashram Trust and former Health Minister ML Ranga, Rajya Sabha MP Ramchandra Jangra, MLA Mithilesh, along with the officials of the trust of the ashram, leaders and devotees from different places of the country were also present. The execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who was convicted for murder in Yemen, was halted for now after last-minute efforts by the Indian authorities, reports said on Tuesday. The execution was scheduled for Wednesday (July 16). She is currently lodged in a jail in Sana'a in the part of Yemen controlled by the Houthi rebel group. The sources stated, as per the news agency, that the government had put in efforts in recent days to seek more time so that Priya's family could reach a mutual agreement with the other party. This mutual agreement, as understood from the efforts so far, could be about paying 'blood money' to the victim's family. Another possible turning point was the intervention of Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, also known as the 'Grand Mufti of India'. Kanthapuram was a part of the last-minute efforts to halt the execution of Priya. The Sunni Muslim leader had earlier held talks with religious authorities in Yemen, according to news agency PTI. 'The fact that he is a follower of Sheikh Habib Umar's Sufi order and the son of another prominent Sufi leader offers great hope,' Kanthapuram's office said. Murder victim's family agrees to meeting A meeting between the representatives of prominent Yemeni scholar Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz and the family of the murder victim, Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mehdi, was also scheduled in Dhamar on Tuesday. According to a source quoted by PTI, the family's agreement to hold talks was being seen as a 'positive signal', given that efforts to establish contact with Talal's kin had failed till now. "It was only through Kanthapuram's intervention that communication with the family became possible for the first time," sources told PTI. Priya, 37, was handed the death sentence for Mehdi's murder in 2017. Since the conviction, the Indian government has been in regular contact with the Yemen authorities and members of Priya's family. Priya is from Kerala's Palakkad district and had moved to Yemen's capital city of Sana'a in 2011 to work as a nurse there. She had partnered with Talal to open a clinic, a legal requirement for foreign nationals in Yemen. Priya sedated Talal in order to retrieve her passport, which he had seized. But the Yemeni national died due to overdose of drugs, following which Priya, along with her colleague, dismembered his body and disposed of it in a tank. Right to pardon under Islamic law Speaking about the case on Tuesday, Kanthapuram said that he made the family understand the issues. 'Islam has another law. If the murderer is sentenced to death, the family of the victim has the right to pardon. I don't know who this family is, but from a long distance, I contacted the responsible scholars in Yemen,' the scholar said, according to ANI. He said that after his request to the scholars, they said 'they would do what they could'. 'They have officially informed us and sent a document stating that the date of execution has been postponed, which will help facilitate the ongoing discussions,' Kanthapuram said. The Indian government had earlier said they 'cannot do much' about the execution. 'There is a point till which the Government of India can go. We have reached that," Attorney General R Venkataramani told the Supreme Court on Monday. He further said the government had reached out to 'an influential sheikh" to speak to authorities in Yemen, but was not sure of that approach would work either.

The family of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death for murder in Yemen, on Tuesday said they were happy after hearing the news of her execution date being postponed. Nimisha's husband Tomy Thomas told PTI that efforts to avert her execution will continue. 'The execution has been postponed. That is good news. We are happy and relieved. I am sure efforts will continue to avert her execution and bring her back safely,' he said. He thanked everyone who worked hard to support the cause. Thomas said they have a daughter studying in class XIII, and that the child has been kept away from these developments. Nimisha's execution was scheduled for July 16 but was postponed earlier today. 'In the case of Nimisha Priya, it has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, 2025," ANI quoted sources as saying. The 38-year-old nurse hails from Kollengode in Palakkad district. A Yemeni court pronounced her guilty of murdering her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in July 2017. This major relief for Nimisha Priya comes after the Indian government lobbied for a resolution. Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, the 94-year-old Sunni Muslim leader who holds the title of the Grand Mufti of India, also held talks with religious authorities in Yemen to save the Indian nurse. On July 15, a meeting was arranged between representatives of the influential Sunni Muslim leader and the family of the Yemeni national who was allegedly killed by Nimisha, PTI reported. A Yemeni court had granted Nimisha Priya a death sentence in 2020 for murdering Talal. In November 2023, the country's Supreme Judicial Council rejected her final appeal. The Supreme Court on Monday expressed sadness over the Indian government's submission that there is not much it can do to intervene and save Nimisha Priya. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a plea seeking directions to the Indian government to save Nimisha from Yemen death row, through diplomatic channel negotiations. The counsel who appeared for Nimisha informed the court that the only remaining option to save her is through a blood money settlement, provided the family of the deceased is willing to accept it, an ANI report said. The Attorney General of India (AGI) stated that the Indian government is making every possible effort to help Nimisha. He further informed the court that talks are ongoing with Yemeni authorities, including the public prosecutor handling Nimisha's case, to secure a suspension of the execution order until negotiations can be pursued. However, the AGI also admitted that the Indian government's ability to intervene is limited, describing it as "a very complex issue," adding, "there's no way we can know what's happening (in Yemen)." "There's nothing much that we can do... It's not like any other part of the world (where possible negotiations can be carried out)", the AGI stated. (With inputs from agencies)
